Character Model Discussion and a Minor Game Update

I’ve made progress on Osana, but not enough progress to make a whole video about her just yet. During these periods of time when I’m not yet ready to show you the next big feature, I will instead be making videos about various subjects related to the game’s development. That’s the kind of video you’re about to see!

Hopefully, the next video will be all about Osana’s interaction events and confession cutscene – but if it proves to be impossible to implement all of that stuff within a 2-week time frame, then the next video will be another video about general game development stuff, similar to the video above.

Fixes, Changes, Additions

The changes in this build are relatively minor – just a few bug fixes and a few updated models/textures:

  • Added a new accessory for Yandere-chan.
  • Updated some outdated student portraits.
  • Replaced more copyrighted music with original music.
  • Fixed bug that would make Pippi appear bald when kidnapped.
  • Updated the large backdrop image displayed behind the school’s neighborhood.
  • Fixed bug that could allow the radio distraction to interfere with scripted events, resulting in weird bugs.
  • Fixed bug that would cause Yandere-chan to appear bald if she got a Game Over while wearing certain hairstyles.
  • Fixed bug that would cause teachers to fall through the floor if more than 3 of them witnessed murder simultaneously.
  • Updated more models in the Martial Arts Club as part of the process of removing all temporary placeholder art assets from the game.
  • Added a new easter egg. It’s not accessed from the Debug Menu. It involves the delinquents. I wonder how long it will take for people to figure out how to activate it…

Remember that you can hold down the Shift key when changing Yandere-chan’s accessory to jump ahead 10 accessories, to minimize the number of times you need to mash the button to see the newest accessory. This works with hairstyles, too. (Of course, one day, there should actually be a genuine graphic user interface for selecting these things…)

What’s Next?

There’s a video that has been in the works for a really long time that is almost finished. I’m REALLY looking forward to sharing it with you! Hopefully, it will be fully completed sometime within the next two weeks. If not, then you’ll get to see it sometime in early May. Aside from that, I’m going to keep working on Osana.

Thank you for your patience!

  1. I don’t mind the small updates and minor videos since there is so much work being put into Osana. Just stay strong Yandere Dev!

  2. I’m really excited for when Osana will be put in the game. And small updates and stuff are okay because new characters take time to actually put in the game mostly rivals because they need detailed routines and cutscenes.

  3. Just my opinion, but I think the current character models (especially Yandere Chan) are perfect for the game as is.

    • I disagree. I know that it may take more time, but so far all of the characters look so… bland, plain, and emotionless, which i thought was only Yandere-Chan. They should all look unique and different, not everyone with the exact same face. Yandere-Chan is fine, but everyone else needs to be updated. Not trying to be a critic, just saying there needs to be more variety.

    • Agreed. Even if all the character models change, I hope the original character designs will still be a user customizable option.

  4. Oh, and I saw the results of that stress survey you did. The vast majority of your fans are the relaxed easy-going type. Work a normal work-week on Yandere Simulator — take evenings and weekends off to enjoy yourself — take vacations as you need them — don’t stress yourself out or kill yourself. Thank you for making this awesome game all on your own! 🙂

    • Not to start a fight but he has volunteers, and he is now linked with an actual company. He also conveniently get 5k a month. Not saying he should work himself to death but definitely saying he could get more done with the amount of resources he now has.

      • yes, exactly my thinking too! i strongly feel that in a way yandev has halted almost all progress on the game to focus on osana; we don’t need her right now, he should’ve done all the other small things that need to be completed before the official demo’s released–making the delinquents walk around, guidance counselor functionality, the headmaster (even if he doesn’t do anything yet), students’s bookbags, etc.

i understand that he can’t populate the empty rooms just yet, but after he got all the animations needed for osana he should’ve told his animators that he needs GC interations/cut scenes and asked artists for end of the day/end credit visuals

it’s been months since we’ve gotten any real game progress, so i don’t even care about osana much right now because even after she’s fully implimented he still has to go back and fill in everything else that’s missing in the school–which he should’ve been doing (what he said he would do) while he was waiting for osana’s assets

this is an indie game, it doesn’t have to be big budget high quality even if he’s working with a company–the character models can def. wait, but i don’t think the change is even nessassary

  5. I think this game don’t need a detailed character customization, it just needs someting like the “south park the stick of truth” charater customization. And please keep the model a cartoonic look

    • i disagree i think if the game has a more detailed customization then you can have a hole variety of custom students and looks for yandere chan. yet i do agree with keeping the cartoonic look with the face.

  6. This is merely an opinionated statement, as everyone has different views on this!!

I believe that making it possible to customize Yandere-Chan would make her less of a recognizable/main character and more of a “relatable/self-insert” character. While there’s definitely nothing wrong with having a self-insertable character, it would ensue the issue of imposing one self on the world of a murderer, when we the players are meant to guide the killer. It begins to feel less like Yandere-Chan is a unique, sociopathic individual for a character and more like us grounding ourselves into the world, playing the game for the sole purpose of the action. (At the end of the day, though, there’s nothing wrong with that!)

I love, love, love, the idea of diversifying the models, as it gives room for height differences between the teachers, students, males and females, weight, etc.! It feels more realistic when a side character is different in comparison to the main character, or when the main character stands out. In Ayano’s case, she would be stark blandness in a sea of diverse anime characters, and that’s what I love about her! A seemingly average girl amongst colorful personalities.

I’d say, to sum up, that my biggest concern is that Ayano would lose personality if she became customizable. I like the idea of Yandev choosing what she will look like, setting her into stone, and forcing us to relate to her in a more brutal aspect. At the end of the day, though, I’ll support the decision no matter what!!

    • Nice to see I’m not the only one who wants Ayano to have a more fixed appearance. With a game like this I think it’s far more interesting to be working with the character of Ayano rather than inserting ourselves into her role, it would be far more compelling to the narrative. Admittedly I kind of had this thought when the Senpai customization was added, I get the idea of having a Senpai that you personally want to pursue but it feels better having an established character so we can see who Ayano became obsessed with. Yeah he’s kind of bland but that’s what makes it unique for Ayano’s character (plus it felt like a bit of an inside joke as most of the yandere characters I’ve seen in anime tend to go for really bland people, was hoping that’s the idea of all these women going for such a boring person). I’m ok with whatever YandereDev decides because of how much I love the game, but considering how unique the rivals are it feels a bit of a step back to not have the main two characters with designs that are set in stone. But who knows, we’ll just have to wait and see.

      • You bring up good points! I think the idea of Senpai remaining a bland, steretypically uninteresting black-haired love interest adds a lot to the joke. He still desperately needs a redesign to make him pop out from the crowd while retaining that generic look.

      • I absolutely love how both Ayano and Senpai stand out in a bland variety. A lot of people’s complaints about Senpai, though, is that he’s still too bland, even if it is intentional. I think the biggest issue is that the models simply don’t have the diversity to make them look outstanding or unique. Part of me feels that, once the new models are implemented, he’ll be more recognizable while still containing that boringness to him. His “official” art on the character page certainly is pretty!

If Yandev was to go in the route of new models, I hope they become similar to the current art style of the artist who makes his website art for him. That way, they would be more unique to Yandere Simulator instead of replicating Dangan Ronpa or Persona. Of course, I’m sure there are limitations to mimicking a 2D art style into 3D figures.

      • I do love Senpai’s non descript style XD He really is a yandere girls dream man haha, but I second what brookania says, it would be nice for a new art style closer to the illustrations, rather than a Danganronpa/Persona look, which are both quite popular and recognizable! We need a look that says ‘Yanderesim’

    • I agree completely. He should invest his efforts into providing better character models with more flexibility, and I love that he acknowledges the importance of his characters being adults.

I think a more customizable system would be useful for designing all the background characters, plus Senpai, but not Yandere-chan. Maybe then it would make all the secondary characters more visually interesting. Luckily I don’t think it was ever Yd’s intention to make Yandere chan customizable in the first place.

I also think the edit boob size functionality for her should be removed from the final game, for the same reasons. On that note, those boob proportions reeeeaaaally need some work as well, they should be improved when the character models are revised

    • Aw… I really wanted customization, but now that I read your comment, I too agree that Yandere-Chan shouldn’t be customizable… Although honestly, the way it’s going, I’m pretty sure there will be customization. After all, we’ve been able to change her hair (and colors) for years!

      • I have no problem with customization, so long as it isn’t her! I want her to be her own unique character, like the rivals, the club leaders, and Info-Chan. What I feel like could happen with customization is we’re given an option of whether or not to design the background characters. If not, we’d still have characters like Kokona, Saki, Midori, Kuu Dere?? Or maybe all the original characters would be kept in the game and then there’d be an added population that we can customize! It’s fun to think about and kind of exciting to wait for. Maybe it’ll be like Pokemon where she’ll have a set design but you can only change her by paying money to salons and clothing stores?? Who knows!

  7. I was actually a little partial to the current character models, but I see the limitations you mentioned, and I understand. I create fiction instead of games, but it’s similar: what works in early drafts or versions must sometimes go through dramatic changes in order to create a better final version. God knows a few of my stories had elements that had to be discarded from the early drafts if I were to make a good story (especially my college thesis, which I hope to get published someday).

Good luck getting Osana finished and everything else. I’m not a gamer by any means, but if I can afford it, I might donate to the crowdfunding campaign when the time comes.

    • Just to let everyone know, if u spam the spacebar key by the delinquents, they will start dancing. I believe that someone in my previous comment said that it was some dance from a pokemon game, sun and moon. But yah. Just spam the spacebar key when ur CLOSE to them.

    • that’s actually the point, yandev has said before that all the rivals are supposed to be somewhat likeable, so the player may feel bad for hurting them; this is why i strongly believe the teacher rivals need to be changed–there is nothing redeemable about adults who prey on high schoolers; nothing, they’re just fucking gross and no one is going to feel guilty for killing/hurting them

  8. Guys I found the easter egg. Press space 10 times in front of the delinquents. You can see what happens for yourself…

  9. That Easter Egg for the debug, its kinda funny xD, Btw I love the Martial Arts Club room. And that Osana Kill method….wow….its brutal i feel bad for Osana…..Rest in pieces….

  10. Small criticism time: there’s no realistic way Osana’s head would get sucked into the machine before her hair would get ripped out. What would most likely happen is she would lose a huge chunk of her scalp. It would definitely warrant hospitalization and probably leave her out of school for the rest of the year, so it would still be a viable elimination method, but the death is pretty much Mortal Kombat levels of ridicule.

  11. I’d actually really like that soft kind of hair style like shown in that character creator clip. While not being ‘super realistic’ it’s a lot less clunky and looks more natural. Although It’d likely be difficult to implement, especially with animating the movements of the hair to match up with the character’s movements. I also think Senpai looks slightly too…bland? Blander even than the rest of the male characters. I get this feeling that he should stand out at least to some extent but he really doesn’t at all.

If you look at some school based anime series, such as if you search up ‘Oreki Senpai’ for example; he is a generic male student and yet he still stands out somewhat to the rest of the other characters. Another good example of this is from the main character of the anime ‘Charlotte’. His name is ‘Yu Otosaka’ and while he is no generic student, he can still pull of the look of one at times which would be very interesting say if Senpai were to snap after being pushed past his limit by Yandere Chan. We’ve already seen the reverse example of this theory in the way that Yandere Chan is psychotic but can appear to be as normal as any of the other students.

  12. I found what the Easter Egg is and it. is. amazing…
Also, with all this new models in the Martial Arts Club, could you do one build where it is a few minor bug fixes and furnish all the rooms. The Workshop and the Club Rooms would look amazing instead of barren, and I wanna know your interpretation of a Sociology Classroom or a Biology Lab. I’m not that great a drawer or concept artist, but I reckon I might be able to design a few rooms for you if you want me to

  13. I would just like to say that I am very happy that you are giving this some much-needed attention. I really think replacing the character models and making them more versatile would take quite some time, but it would definitely make the game look and feel more professional! As for the hairstyles, it depends on how different the current model’s head shape is in comparison to your idea of the new one. If it’s only a slight difference, I think the first suggestion would work best and would save a lot of time 🙂

    • Yeah, and he’ll have no other choice but to ditch the old hair models if he chooses a realistic art style.

I don’t think Y-S can pull off realistic models without a veteran art director and a team of artists, instead of just yd and volunteers/commission artists. There’s too much risk of the animations looking bland, rigid and uncanny.

  14. I really love the different uniforms shown on the thumbnail of this video, it shows us a different style of the game and it looks much more realistic and makes them look more like adults

  15. No thanks to noodle people – I actually find more realistic models to be more attractive than “idealized” ones. Also good expressions are often about being subtle – except when done for comedy. Following Higurashi and Mass Effect: Andromeda are not something to aim for here.

More character diversity is good – perhaps toning down stuff like glaringly colorful stockings on non-delinquents.

    • I mean, “idealized” isn’t really the proper word because the way anime bodies are drawn would be super-hideous in real life. Its people’s own faults for believing that they look better than real humans lol.

But on the subject of realism, the more real it gets, the more uncanny it gets, and people actually start to associate those “real” looking people as idealized instead of cartoony. Cartoony/anime is further from real life and if it stays that way, people can distinguish it easier and not even have the problem of “idealized.”

  16. I have a suggestion for the fan elimination method; instead of it being used to kill a rival, why not use it to dispose of corpses? What you would have to do is dismember someone with the circular saw, then take them to the fan at the roof top, then shove each body part in one-by-one; this would trigger a mini-game – you have to make tap a button at a simple rhythm at exactly the right pace so Yandere-chan doesn’t hurt herself. If you fail, Yandere-chan will lose control and her hand will cut off, resulting in her dying. What happens after that? The game will probably just restart as a “DEAD” screen would be a bit weird for the type of art style of this game. This should be unlocked to all characters. It won’t be easy though:

1: Upgrade your physical education stat so Yandere-chan is strong enough to unscrew the cover.

2: Upgrade another stat that will be added so you know how a circular saw works and how to acquire one.

3: Upgrade another stat that will be added so Yandere-chan can learn the ability to amputate (dismember).

4: If blood goes on the wall, Yandere-chan cannot use a mop, so she would have to locate a sponge. (There would be a sponge in multiple locations).

    5. Mai Waifu stands on the roof top near the fan, so she would hear the fan cutting up something (a body) and go over to investigate. Make sure she is distracted or distracting someone.

These should be all the steps done to be able to dispose of a body in the fan.

(THIS WAS RE-POSTED DUE TO TYPOS AND WORDS THAT WEREN’T SUPPOSED TO BE THERE)

  18. This game seriously needs a design overhaul. I’ve always felt that it looks amateur as-is, and because of that, I never took the game seriously enough. Even though he’s said it before, I didn’t really know Yandere Dev was aiming to make this game like an actual video game.

Anyway, I wish that Yandere Dev could make the bodies of the students resemble Guillermo Iglesias’s artwork. The way Guillermo draws bodies is really nice and stylized, and it looks much better to me than those slender stick-students with long necks.

Speaking of skinny, the Nurse REALLY needs to gain some pounds and get bigger hips, she doesn’t look as balanced or as chunky as the way Guillermo draws her.

  19. This has less to do with the character models and more with the overall look of the game.

I think your lighting is lacking in some places. I’m assuming you have shadows disabled, but looking at other videos where shadows are on, nothing is casting a shadow when indoors . Adding some ceiling lights might help with that.

The textures could also use more color variation and contrast. Everything also looks like its made of the same material. The only difference your have between materials are their color. Even in an anime style game like persona there are subtle differences between materials like there spectacular or reactivity. Just playing with the roughness maps can help with that.

As for the character models, yes giving them more anime proportions would look good and having a better facial rig to make better expressions would be a great improvement.

  20. I don’t know how I feel about the third hairstyle choice unless the new system had hair options that were based on the others; at least the commissioned ones. Quite a few people paid large amounts to commission the hairstyles that are currently in the game, and those hairstyles being removed entirely wouldn’t go over well at all.

  21. What about blood? Will characters have some reactions on pools of blood and bloody footprints when Osana’s implemented? And will the police consider bloody mops and bloody water that Yandere-chan’s left?
( or i’m living under a rock and YandereDev’s already said something about it and i just don’t remember.)
