Halloween Update

Happy Halloween, everyone! Just like last year, it’s time for a…

 Yandere Sim Spooktacular!

Let’s start off with some absolutely beautiful fan-art by the incredibly talented Chatgaga Letouffu!

Gorgeous, huh? Next, check out this Halloween comic illustrated by SRealms!

But, I know what you’re really here for…the latest video! Here it is! Go ahead and watch it!

I hope you enjoyed that video – between October 18th and October 31st, I worked on that minigame for about 156 hours! I completely abstained from video games for 13 days straight in order to prepare that minigame in time for for Halloween.

The entire time that I was working on it, I was pretty nervous. After all, it’s really easy to come up with a big reason to dislike the latest addition to the game; it’s a mini-game that has nothing to do with the core gameplay! In other words, although I worked for 156 hours over a course of 13 days, I didn’t make a single bit of progress on Yandere Sim’s core gameplay; instead, I made a mini-game that can be beaten within 5 minutes! I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of people react to this video by saying “YandereDev, you idiot! Work on the main game! Don’t work on silly little pet projects!”

However, I believe that this minigame/video is important, because it serves several purposes:

  1. This minigame demonstrates what I want the “Video Games” feature in Yandere-chan’s room to be like. I’d like to have at least 4 other minigames just like this.
  2. This minigame demonstrates what type of game I’d like to make once Yandere Simulator is finished – a fast-paced high-energy action game, with crazy attacks and dramatic boss fights! It could be a side-scroller, a shoot-em-up, or a hack-and-slash; I just want to work on an action game!
  3. This minigame serves as a short vacation from Yandere Simulator, while still contributing to Yandere Simulator. In the past, I made dozens of small game prototypes like this one. I was a much happier person back when I was making several “rapid prototypes” every month. I stopped doing that, and turned Yandere Simulator into my full-time job. However, I never stopped yearning to make more “rapid prototypes” like this two-week project. Working on “Yanvania” helped me get away from Yandere Sim for a couple of weeks, but it’s not a total waste, since the result is something that can be featured within the game.
  4. This minigame serves as a “pitch” for a future game. As you can tell from watching the end of the video, I already have a premise/plot/storyline in mind. After watching the above video, do you think you’d want to play “Yanvania: Senpai of the Night”, or something similar to it? Perhaps a poll is in order.

Of course, working for 156 hours and completely abstaining from video games doesn’t really sound like much of a “vacation”, now, does it? Also, if people react negatively to the “Yanvania” minigame and wish I’d been working on the core game instead, then I guess I wasted the last 13 days of my life pretty badly!

In any case, two things are for certain:

  1. The next update should be coming very soon: in less than a week! And this time, it will be an addition to the core gameplay!
  2. I hope that you all have a wonderful Halloween!

EDIT 1:

Oh, yeah, I almost forgot! If you like the “Yanvania: Senpai of the Night” title screen artwork illustrated by that-bleach-fan, you can download it here!

EDIT 2:

By the way! There’s an easter egg hidden in the Yanvania title screen. I wonder if anyone will find it?

EDIT 3:

Wow! My biggest mistake yet – I forgot to mention the talented gentlemen who contributed the music for this minigame!

The “Boss Approach” music and “Boss Battle” music were composed by by Darrell “Dibur” Reconose!

The Title Screen music was composed by Christopher Escalante, who also composed music for Seduce Me 2!

October 18th Bug-Fixing Build

Yikes! There were some serious bugs in the previous build! Here’s a new build that addresses many of the problems that people have been reporting.

Scroll down to see a list of all the bug fixes!

  • Fixed bug that would allow Yandere-chan to go to class while a mind-broken student was committing murder, causing a bunch of other bugs to occur as a side-effect.
  • Fixed bug that would cause your kidnapped victim’s school uniform to not be the uniform that the player selected for the school’s students to wear.
  • Fixed bug that would cause a mind-broken student to attend class instead of permanently standing still and waiting for orders from her master.
  • Fixed bug that would sometimes cause inactive parts of the game’s interface to appear in the background when using the tape player.
  • Fixed incorrect text in the “Return to main menu” window when the window was accessed from Yandere-chan’s room.
  • Fixed bug that would allos Yandere-chan to talk to Kokona while a mind-broken slave was heading to kill her.
  • Fixed bug that would cause Yandere-chan to turn invisible at the title screen under certain circumstances.
  • Fixed bug that was causing Yandere-chan’s reputation to not actually drop when she skipped school.
  • Removed the “Tap the S key to lower prisoner’s sanity” debug command.
  • Added new music to Yandere-chan’s room and basement.

I wish I had time to fix more bugs, but I’m going to need to pour 100% of my time into the Halloween update if I want to prepare it before October 31st.

Thank you very much for following the development of Yandere Simulator!

One last note: If you haven’t seen it already, please read this blog post!

Torture, Mind-Breaking, and Murder-Suicide

A long-awaited feature has been added to the game! All of the animations are super rough placeholders, but I’m happy that I got everything to function properly!

Here’s a list of everything that is new in this build:

Kidnapped Victims

  • Kidnapped victims are now tied to a chair instead of a pole.
  • Kidnapped victims now look at you as you walk around the basement.
  • Kidnapped victims now have an attribute called “Sanity”.
  • Kidnapped victims now speak. Their speech depends on their current level of sanity.
  • You can now interact with kidnapped victims.
  • You can torture a kidnapped victim for 1, 8, 12, or 16 hours.
  • You can now be “late” for school if you spend an hour torturing a kidnapped victim before school.
  • After a kidnapped victim has 0 Sanity, you can bring them to school.
  • If you hand a kidnapped victim a weapon, they will murder the purple-haired girl and then commit suicide.

Other Additions

  • Fixed bug that would cause some NPCs to be unable to die during the “Cirno Mode” Easter Egg.
  • Changed the “disable copyrighted music” button from “C” to “D”.
  • Added a new cassette tape to the game.

I’m glad that I was able to get this feature out of the way! Now I can focus on the Halloween update. I have something very special planned. I hope that everyone will enjoy it!

Please Stop Sending Me Stupid E-Mails!

Updated October 15th with more information regarding crash bugs.

I try to only discuss positive things here on the blog, so please believe me when I say that I wouldn’t be bringing this up if it wasn’t a legitimate problem.

STOP SENDING STUPID E-MAILS!

There was once a point in time when I was receiving so many stupid e-mails every day that it actually became impossible for me to make progress on the game because of the sheer amount of time that I had to spend sifting through my e-mail attempting to locate meaningful e-mails. After I complained about it – loudly – across several videos and blog posts – and created a character solely for the purpose of ridiculing people who send me stupid e-mails – the avalanche of dumb e-mails subsided, and I was actually able to resume making significant progress on the game.

However, over the past week, I’ve been receiving an absolutely unacceptable number of e-mails that I can only describe as stupid, and I can honestly say that it’s interfering with the amount of time I have to work on the game.

Before you make a horrible mistake and become Midori-chan, I beg you to read the following:

Please DO NOT contact me just to tell me that you tried to download the game, and your download was corrupt.

This is not my fault in any way. What do you expect me to do? Come over to your house and click the download link myself until you receive a file that is not corrupt? If your download was corrupt, or there was an error when trying to decompress the rar file, or the game tells you that files are missing, then the only solution is for you to re-download the game. You’re the only one who can solve that problem. Not me.

If you see weird stuff like this, it’s because your download was corrupt. Please do NOT e-mail me and tell me about it, because there’s nothing I can do about it.

If your download is ALWAYS corrupt, I’m sorry, but I can not help you. That is your problem, and not mine. Just wait until there is an official launcher/updater that checks for file integrity.

Please DO NOT use vague language in bug reports.

It’s all too often that I get really stupid bug reports like this:

“On Wednesday at lunchtime, Kokona will glitch out.”

“Glitch out”? What is that supposed to mean? Glitch out HOW? Does she stop moving? Does she vibrate? Does she turn upside down? You must describe the exact nature of the problem, or else I won’t have enough information to understand what you’re talking about.

Please DO NOT attempt to insert jokes into your bug reports.

Often, a bug report will have some stupid inside jokes that make it impossible for me to understand what the bug reporter is talking about.

“On Wednesday at lunchtime, Kokona will go full Naruto!”

This statement relies on me knowing what you’re referencing about Naruto. Don’t assume that I’ve seen every anime, TV show, and movie that you’ve seen. Don’t make references that I might not understand; just describe the problem clearly.

Please DO NOT report bugs that you saw in a YouTube video.

Because the game is constantly being updated, YouTube videos are often outdated and obsolete within 24 hours. Anything you see in a YouTube video is something that happened in the past, in an old and outdated version of the game. It doesn’t matter how recent the YouTube video is; never base a bug report off of something you saw in a video. Only write bug reports based on what you have personally experienced first-hand in the most recent version of the game.

Please DO NOT send me crash logs.

When a Unity game crashes, you will see the following error message:

Someone looked through one of the crash logs for me, and discovered what was causing the game to crash. The problem was that files were missing. I looked through several other crash logs that people had sent to me, and every one that I checked had the same error message: “file not available”. In other words, the game does not have any “crash bugs” – the game will only crash if your download was incomplete or corrupt.

Please DO NOT offer to translate the game.

I’m super happy to hear that you want to translate the game into your language. However, it would be absolutely pointless to work on translations at this point in time, because I am constantly changing the game’s text, and I don’t want to ask you to re-translate the game’s script every few days.

I will not seek any translators until after the game’s English script is 100% finalized, which will be several months from now.

Please DO NOT send me your suggestions / ideas for the game.

It’s nice to hear that you’ve come up with ideas for Yandere Simulator, but I’ve got to be honest with you: 99% of the time that I get a suggestion from someone, their suggestion:

1. Has already been suggested before.
2. Is already a planned feature of the game.
3. Does not fit in with the design of the game.
4. Is far beyond the scope of a one-man indie game with no budget.

So, please, just don’t even bother. Please don’t e-mail me your suggestions unless I am specifically asking for feedback/ideas.

Please DO NOT suggest that I get a secretary to help me with my e-mails.

I have already explained numerous times why this is an absolutely horrible idea. It’s not going to work. Stop suggesting this. Furthermore, don’t write an e-mail trying to debate the points that I made in that video, because I’ve already heard it all, and the answer is still no, I should not get a secretary.

Please DO NOT think that you are the one exception to everything I have written above, and that you are a brilliant genius who is going to convince me to change my mind about all of the above information.

If you’re planning to write me an e-mail saying “YandereDev, I have the solution for your e-mail problems!” please stop immediately. Any idea that you want to suggest to me has already been suggested, and if I’m not using that idea already, then obviously there’s a problem with that idea, isn’t there? So, please, don’t even bother!

Now that you’ve read a list of what NOT to do, here’s a list of what you SHOULD do:

  • Please ALWAYS read the Known Bugs page before reporting a bug.
  • Please ALWAYS read the FAQ before asking me a question.
  • Please ALWAYS remember that I receive literally hundreds of e-mails every day, and that every hour I spend reading e-mails is an hour I am NOT working on the game, and when I’m not working on the game, the game’s development is not moving forward whatsoever. In other words, when you write a stupid e-mail and waste my time, you are literally delaying the game.

I hate to write such a negative blog post, but as I said in the beginning, I wouldn’t be writing this post if I didn’t deem it to be absolutely necessary.

Remember: every time you waste my time by writing an utterly stupid e-mail, a yandere girl loses her Senpai. Please, think of the yandere girls. You wouldn’t want to make a yandere girl angry, would you?

(…It’s still fine to share fan-art and cosplay, because I think that stuff is super cool.)

October 11th Bug-Fixing Build

Yikes! More bugs! I’ve prepared a new build full of bug fixes. As always, you can find the latest build here. This build also contains something that Touhou fans might enjoy…

To see a list of all of the latest fixes and additions, scroll down beneath this gorgeous illustration by AlterTheStars!

  • Fixed bug that would make it possible for Yandere-chan to overhear the purple-haired girl’s rooftop conversation by standing in the room directly beneath her.
  • Fixed build that would cause the cyan-haired girl’s bra task to automatically be completed under a set of very specific circumstances.
  • Fixed bug that would allow Kokona to break out of her “being electrocuted” animation if she spotted Yandere-chan looking suspicious.
  • Fixed bug that would allow Yandere-chan to talk to an NPC who was distracting another NPC, or being distracted by another NPC.
  • Fixed bug that would cause Ryuto Ippongo to be bald in the “Witness Cam” that appears when a student witnesses murder.
  • Fixed bug that would allow players to gossip about dead students.
  • Added “Accept / Refuse” button prompts when the “Will you accept this task?” window appears.
  • Replaced the “Quit Game” option on the pause screen with a “Return to Main Menu” option.
  • Added a sound effect when the vending machine dispenses a can.
  • Added a new Easter Egg.

I know it’s only been two days, but I need to bring this up again. I’m getting a flood of really useless and annoying e-mails, and sifting through them all is seriously cutting into my development time. Before e-mailing me, please think carefully about whether or not your e-mail is really worth sending. I may make a blog post elaborating about this problem soon.

October 9th Bug-Fixing Build

Oops! There were a lot of embarrassing bugs in the previous build of the game. A new build has been uploaded. You can grab it from the Downloads page.

Scroll down for a list of the bugs that I fixed in this build!

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed bug that would prevent the player from selecting a student to distract when attempting to tell a friend to go distract someone.
  • Fixed bug that would cause a student to enter the “Distracted” state permanently if the student who was distracting them was killed.
  • Fixed bug that would cause controller buttons to appear on the social media website when the player was using a keyboard.
  • Fixed bug that would allow the player to gossip to a student about themself, under specific circumstances.
  • Fixed bug that would cause the game to become unresponsive if the player attempted to apologize.
  • Fixed bug that would cause two text messages from Info-chan to overlay on top of each other.
  • Fixed bug that would prevent Kokona from discovering a letter left inside of her locker.
  • Fixed bug that would cause Kokona to walk in place during her Wednesday lunchtime event.
  • Fixed bug that would cause Senpai’s eyes to point in different directions…I think.
  • Fixed bug that would change the color of the letter left inside of Kokona’s locker.
  • Fixed bug that was causing the word “Sleep” above Yandere-chan’s bed to flicker.
  • Fixed bug that would allow the player to gossip about teachers.
  • Changed the cost of a girl’s dark secret from 10 panty shots to 8 panty shots.

Phew! Hopefully those were all of the major bugs. I hope that there aren’t any other game-breaking bugs left in the current build!

Also, I hate to be a Negative Nancy, but it’s about time for me to remind people to read this blog post.

Thank you for following Yandere Simulator’s development!

Friendship, Gossip, and Bullying

I’ve finally prepared a new build of the game! This build introduces the concepts of friendship, gossiping, and bullying to the game.

This video should explain everything:

In addition to those features, some other miscellaneous improvements were added to the game. Here’s a full list of everything that’s new in this build:

Gossip

  • It is now possible to damage a student’s reputation by gossiping about them with other NPCs.
  • It is not possible to gossip if your reputation is “Bad”.
  • You cannot gossip with a student more than once per day.
  • Gossiping damages your own reputation.
  • Having a high reputation will enhance the effect of your gossip.
  • Wearing the right panties will enhance the effect of your gossip.
  • You can pay Info-chan for information that will enhance the effect of your gossip.
  • Being friends with a student will enhance the effect of your gossip with that student.
  • It is possible to damage a student’s reputation by badmouthing them on social media.
  • If you lie on the Internet, your reputation will drop.
  • If you expose your rival’s dirty secrets on the Internet, her reputation will drop.
  • You can check a student’s reputation on your smartphone’s “Student Info” screen.
  • If a student’s reputation drops low enough, they will no longer be welcome around other students, and will sit alone instead of socializing.
  • If a student’s reputation drops low enough, other students will begin to vandalize that student’s desk.
  • If a student’s reputation drops low enough, they will stop coming to school.

Yandere-chan’s Room

  • Added night and day to Yandere-chan’s room. Certain activities are only available during the day, others only available at night.
  • Added a bed for sleeping, a TV for gaming, a shelf for manga, and a computer for cyber-bullying.
  • Yandere-chan now gets her panties from a drawer instead of an armoire.
  • Replaced Yandere-chan’s room with a new environment model.
  • Added placeholder music tracks to Yandere-chan’s room.

Tasks and Friendship

  • It is now possible to use the “Task” option in the student interaction wheel to accept a task from a student. There is currently only one in the game.
  • If you complete a Task for a student, your reputation will improve, and that student will become your friend.
  • Being friends with a student enables you to access the Favors menu.
  • All of the options in the Favors menu are now operational. You can ask a friend to follow you, leave the area, or distract another NPC for you.
  • Being friends with a student also means that your compliments and gossip will have a stronger effect on that student.
  • You can check the status of all of your current Tasks on your smartphone’s “Task list” screen.

Other Improvements

  • Fixed a bug that would cause Senpai to have white hair and white eyes if the player made no selections whatsoever when customizing Senpai at the customization screen.
  • It is now possible to take photographs by aiming the camera and then pressing the CTRL button instead of the left mouse button. (“RB” for Xbox controller users.)
  • Attempted to fix the bug that would cause Yandere-chan and a student to freeze in place when Yandere-chan tried to interact with a student.
  • While speaking with an NPC, it is now possible to tap the “Confirm” button during a conversation to advance the text.
  • An audio clip now plays when trying to look up Info-chan’s information in the Student Info screen.
  • After you kidnap a girl, the girl who appears in your basement will have the correct hairstyle.
  • Fixed bug that would cause Osana Najimi to disappear under specific circumstances.
  • It is now possible to access the phone pause menu when in Yandere-chan’s room.
  • The “End-Of-Day Results” screen has been sped up to twice its previous speed.
  • There is now an operational vending machine on school grounds.
  • Added a new Easter egg.

Hair

  • Adjusted the contrast of the hair textures so that some hairstyles are not drastically darker than other hairstyles.
  • Fixed a problem that would cause Ryuto Ippongo’s bandana to appear black when viewed from a certain angle.
  • Gave the teachers unique hair and glasses so that they no longer look like clones of Yandere-chan.
  • Added three new hairstyles for Yandere-chan.
  • Gave Ryuto Ippongo some less-extreme hair.
  • Improved Pippi Osu’s hair.

If I’m still going by my “1st and 15th of every month” update schedule, then this update was 7 days late, and I only have 7 days to produce a new update. It would be impossible to implement something elaborate into the game in such a short span of time…but I can think of a few features that people have been begging for that wouldn’t take more than a few days to implement, so that might be the focus of the next build. However, I don’t want to make any promises just yet. We’ll just have to see how things turn out.

I Want My Senpai Back

All work and no play makes YandereDev morbidly depressed, so I decided to make something fun with the help of several very talented volunteers:

Check out the video description for a list of everyone involved in the production of the video!

Would you like to see more “just for fun” videos like this in the future, or do you think that I should never do anything like this ever again? Please let me know your thoughts in the comment section below.
