Reputation and NPC Interactions

Happy New Year! If you haven’t seen the Annual Report blog post, check it out!

Most of the progress I’ve made over the past 2 weeks is summed up in this video:

When you are within a student’s field of vision doing something suspicious, a marker appears onscreen that points towards any students who can see you. When a student spots you, there is a full-screen effect (anime-style speed lines) to let you know that you’ve been noticed. Students will also vocalize their thoughts, currently rendered as subtitles appearing at the bottom of the screen.

Reputation

Here’s a closer look at the reputation bar (artwork not final):

As the video explains, reputation loss does not occur instantly; it occurs after students have gathered to gossip. Gossip occurs at 8:30 AM (when homeroom begins), 1:30 PM (when lunchtime ends), and 6:00 PM (when students go home and post on the Internet).

In the above image, the white marker indicates your current Reputation, and the “-50” in the above image indicates that you’re going to lose 50 Reputation points the next time students gossip. After someone spots you doing something naughty, you can apologize to restore 50% of the lost reputation. A student will only accept one apology per day. You can also compliment a student to gain some more rep. An apology + compliment combo is the best idea after you’ve been spotted doing something unethical.

Your reputation can be in one of three states; Unpopular, Neutral, and Popular. Being Unpopular causes students to keep an eye on you when you enter a room, so it’s harder to get away with stealth kills / theft / trespassing. When you’re Unpopular, students won’t fully accept your apologies, meaning that apologizing only restores 25% of lost reputation. Students also doubt that your compliments are sincere, meaning that compliments will provide you with less positive rep.

Being Popular means that students are willing to overlook one misdeed per day, completely forgive you if you apologize, and be extra flattered by your compliments. It’s easy to coast on a good reputation, but it’s very hard to claw your way back to the top if you’ve lost a lot of rep.

So far, complimenting other students is the only way to improve your reputation. Can you think of other ways the player could improve their reputation? Please leave suggestions in the comments below!

If your reputation drops to -100, the entire school thinks you are absolute scum – including Senpai. Rock-bottom reputation means that Senpai knows what a terrible person you are, and could never love you. This is an instant game over. However…

Game Overs

I’d like Yandere Sim’s “game over” to actually be a playable sequence. For example, if your rep drops to -100, you are given the option to either reload a previous save, or keep playing, with new objectives: Kill Senpai, and then kill yourself. If you can’t have him, nobody should be able to have him.

So, since “game over” in Yandere Sim doesn’t actually mean that the game is really over, what should it be called? Love Over? Catherine already uses the phrase “Love is Over” when the player dies, so Yandere Sim should probably use something more original than that.

How would you like to see game overs handled? Feel free to leave suggestions in the comments!

NPC Interaction

Another new feature is the ability to directly interact with students.  The artwork definitely isn’t meant to be final, but here’s a look at the student interaction menu:

By holding down the proper button near a student, Yandere-chan will call out for that student’s attention. If you don’t choose any dialogue options, and just awkwardly stand there without saying anything for 10 seconds, the student will get annoyed with you and leave. If you do this to a student multiple times in a row, you have demonstrated that you’re a weirdo who likes to waste other peoples’ time, so you’ll lose some reputation, and the student will ignore you for the rest of the day if you try to talk to them.

When interacting with a student, some options may be locked out. For example, you can’t apologize if you’ve done nothing wrong.

I haven’t yet decided what all of the different available interactions should be. The only four interactions that are guaranteed to make it into the final game are:

  • Apologize – Restores 50% of the reputation lost from the last unethical behavior witnessed.
  • Compliment – Boosts reputation.
  • Gossip – Damage the reputation of another student (can lead to that student becoming bullied, staying home from school, or committing suicide).
  • Goodbye – Ends conversation.

The other options on that dialogue wheel mockup are:

  • Threaten
  • Seduce

“Threaten” would cause a student to leave an area and walk elsewhere. It would result in a loss of reputation, but it can prevent that student from becoming a witness to murder, which is much more dire than simply losing a few rep points.

“Seduce” should probably be renamed to “Ask Favor”. It would only be available if your reputation is high, or if you’ve increased your “Seduction” stat enough to get people to do favors for you even without a good reputation. The “Seduction” stat would probably be increased by spending class reading H-manga instead of actually paying attention to the teacher.

As for actual favors, I can only think of 3:

  • Leave (same effect as “Threaten” but without rep loss)
  • Ignore (same effect as having a good reputation; one minor misdeed is ignored)
  • Distract (student distracts a particular student for you)

Because “Leave” and “Ignore” have the same effect as “Threaten” and having a good reputation, “Ask Favor” seems like a pretty pointless option (or “Threaten” could be removed and replaced with another option, so “Leave” becomes the only way to make a student leave an area).

What kind of favors do you think the player should be able to ask NPCs for? What other interactions would you like to be able to perform with students?

Next Update

Now that students can properly react to suspicious behavior, the next feature I’d like to implement is getting students to properly react to murder. As I may have mentioned, I plan to have 5 different student personality types, each of which govern how the student reacts to murder:

  • Teacher’s Pet: Student runs to nearest teacher, informs them of the murder.
  • Social Butterfly: Student runs to nearest group of students, calls the cops.
  • Coward: Student flees the school, calls the cops.
  • Brave: Student attempts to restrain you.
  • Evil: Student congratulates you on your kill, vows to not speak a word about it.

How do you feel about these personality types? Which would you remove, add, or change?

  1. Reputation could increase if you study well, help other students, participate in club activities.

The player should be able to “continue” after a game over: killing senpai, and killing herself.

Favors should include tasking the students with some small work, sharing certain items, asking to help with something.

All the personality types are fine. I think there should be some kind of “personality twist” where the NPC is not behaving normally after a traumatic event. It’s making a personality have some elements of other personality so that it will greatly vary the reactions.

  2. Personally I think that a nice thing would be actually getting to talk with Senpai and being able to have your reputation or beauty affect him. Because, the whole point of a yandere is to get the person to fall in love with you right?
Also, I feel another kind of student should be like, a healer, AND Students who are dying should have a percentage chance to be healed back to life o.o That’d be interesting.
Good Luck on the game ❤

  3. I really think it would be cool is aside from leaving poeple a note to meet you on the rooftop to fake their suicide, you would also be able to ( once youve taken enough language classes) and leave a blackmail note in their locker with a pantyshot and make them do tasks for you 😄

Another cool idea would be if
After ypu build up ypur reputation/popularity youcoild steal other peoples boyfriends to gain ven more rep or make people jelous/ spread rumors( including senpai)

These are just a few things me and pther people who love this game thought would be an amzing addition to the game in progress💗❤️🔪💉💗

  4. You guys should add more to the gym. Currently you really can’t do anything in there as far as creative kills or activities. And I love the idea of eaves dropping on conversations to use it to your advantage so please add more conversations and make them a variety of different topics please

    • Also yandere dev can add more classes and more food vending machines and you can pick up the cans and other stuff from the vending machines

  5. I also want to talk to Senpai so I can get him to do favors for me involving getting Osana Najimi to Kill Herself (When she is an active NPC)

  6. Hi Yandere Dev I hope this is a good place to put my suggestions anyway I think you should add boys /girls that have crushes on yandere-chan (if not there already) and those boys/girl can be told to do things for time with yandere-chan etc , ability to flirt with npc’s and the “crush” says its you, A evil personality boy / girl that likes yandere-chan who if they see a murder won’t say anything , be able to pick yandere-chan’s personlity ; occult type , goth , punk , visual kei , lolita (maybe a certain type of hair accessories and frilly socks , stockings , different bra , panties etc , and her room to look as such) , music class (with many different instruments ) , more school type things (like the principal / headmaster specking to everyone , calling you in office , school events if possible) , weapon suggestions : bat , pocket knife , hammer (small) , axe (big or small) , crowbar, throwing stars , kunai , pepper spray , taser . Anime club . The ability to play games in the computer lab , ability to talk to teachers , become the leader of delinquents / second in command , scare a girl who sees a murder into not saying anything / blackmail her or bully her / spread rumors , boys/girls who have a crush on yandere-chan put love letters in her locker / confess their love to her and you can use them to help you . Able to start fights among students and students who don’t like each other and you can say someone said blah blah about them and make them fight , forge their signature and write a note to someone bullying them and making a tough personality go fight them but if they are a coward they tell teacher . A pervert girl and guy , boy sneaks into the girls bathroom , girl does the same , pervert can catch blood on you , if you walk around naked people will say stuff like : slut , whore , put on some clothes , if they are your friend they say something like : what happened? or go get you some clothes , if the pervert boy sees he says something like : beautiful , nice , beautiful body (maybe more sexual stuff idk how far you will go) , yandere-chan can choose what food to bring to lunch , eats , can get vending machine food , ditch classes , sneck out of the school area , maybe something where yandere-chan can mimic voices and ruin reputation that way / cause fights and students to not like a student like you dress as them and mimic their voice , you can brainwash boys who like you / girls to do stuff for you , since you can torture them you should be able to brain wash them , ability to sit down pretty much any where like other characters can , be able to throw a sleeping girl off roof , characters sleep at school and you can sneck past them , throw them off things , stab them in the back (while sleeping or woke ) . Students who have a crush on you talk to you differently or studder depending on their personality , ability to date boys / girls (only to use them ) . When you go insane you should be able to basically be yuno gasai where she is insane but appears to be fine not just game over basically when you are insane . When the game is completely perhaps add other modes and stuff some that make it more than just a week so we can enjoy the game even more , you can pick where your character has lunch , an evil personality that is your friend that helps you kill students they hate / just for fun, your character ha actual friends that come talk to you and don’t immediately go to call the police or a teacher if they see something , hang out with you sometimes at lunch , swimming club . swimming team , gym classes , more conversions for rumors to spread, Yandere-chan has dreams , nail polish , lip stick , eyeshadow , eyeliner .

  7. Oh and occult books you can use to like call spirits , demons , etc to help you kill people , ghost that pulls girls into the spirit world , more japanese myths , if you kill someone in the occult room / make a mind slave kill themselves there or kill someone else there or kill someone and collect their blood then something happens , you can become a succubus (if thats what that women was ) , the flame man in the other dimension helps you do something too

  8. I had an idea for a personality, though I understand YandereDev doesn’t take suggestions. A “Sleuth” or “Detective” personality. If a “detective” personality sees a dead body, they’ll linger around it and investigate it to see if they can find any clues, afterwards, they’ll leave to find a teacher. If a “detective” sees you approach the body, they’ll question you, if you are bloody or holding a weapon, they’ll point and yell at you, and if you run, they’ll chase after you to apprehend you. If they see you with a weapon, they will question you and your intentions, and will remember you being suspicious, and will report you to the counselor, if bloody, they will view you as suspicous and will report you to the counselor. If you try to take a photo of a “detective,” they will move by you and avoid you. Although a “detective” can be dangerous if right, they’re significantly less dangerous when wrong, and will accept tips about the tradgedies, so they’re very easy to decieve. What do you think?
