Happy Halloween!

Hey, it’s October 31st! That means it’s Halloween! And that also means it’s time for my annual

What is a “Spooktacular”? Well, it’s a yearly tradition of mine; I post a pair of wiggling skeletons and then release a horror-themed minigame!

As you might have noticed, I’ve been busy every single day this month releasing bug-fixing builds for 1980s Mode. I simply didn’t have enough time to create a horror-themed minigame this year.

However…

Last year, around this point in time, I had a dream. In my dream, I was fighting a witch by placing magical objects on a grid. Some of these magic objects protected me from the witch’s spells, and other objects would attack the witch. It felt like a video game; some kind of first-person, grid-based action game.

My dream was so vivid that I decided to make a game prototype based on the “mechanics” of the dream. Don’t worry, it didn’t take time away from development; I did it in my spare time, and streamed the whole thing on my Twitch channel. It only took a couple of days.

Since witches are spooky and my prototype is a sort of miniature game, it technically counts as a “horror-themed minigame”, so I’ve decided to release it to the public for this year’s Spooktacular!

I call it:

Witch Game!

You can download it here:

Now, I’m just going to warn you, this prototype is basic. It’s probably only good for, like, 30 seconds of entertainment. However, I’m still kinda proud of it, since I managed to re-create my dream almost perfectly.

Does It Work?

The purpose of a prototype is to test a concept. So, after building a prototype to give this concept a test-drive, what have we learned? Well, to be honest, I feel that this prototype has revealed that the concept is very flawed

The focus of a strategy game is to outsmart your enemy. But if your enemy is constantly moving around the entire grid at a high speed, you can’t plan ahead or try to thwart your enemy’s strategy with one of your own. And if you can run and jump all over the grid freely, it becomes trivially easy to avoid anything your enemy does. Frantic, fast-paced, running-and-jumping gameplay does not suit a strategy game.

In its current form, the prototype leads us to the game development equivalent of a dead end; “This isn’t fun. Let’s go back to the drawing board and re-design it.” And every solution I can think of involves making the game turn-based in some form.

Imagine that the enemy gets 5 seconds to run around the map and place skulls/shields. Then it’s your turn. Now you get 5 seconds to dodge/sabotage whatever your enemy did, and throw down some skulls/shields of your own. Back and forth you go, until one opponent has outmaneuvered and outsmarted the other. Retains the fast pace, the grid, and the running+jumping gameplay, but it becomes a more tactical and strategic game.

The more I think about it, the more I feel that, by making it turn-based, it might actually have some potential. In fact, there is already a strategy game that combines turn-based elements, real-time elements and free movement around an environment that is quite fun – one of my most favorite games of all time, in fact!

…but, even though it would be incredibly fun to work on a project with that type of gameplay…it’s something I wouldn’t even dream of working on until after my current project is finished.

…and, on that note…

The Near Future

In this blog post, I’ve mentioned two things that I’d like to elaborate about:

  1. Releasing daily bug-fixing builds for 3 weeks straight
  2. Making game prototypes

I knew that 1980s Mode would draw a lot of attention to Yandere Simulator. With that many eyes on the game, I wanted to make sure that any bugs or issues found within the new mode would get fixed ASAP. So, I decided to fully commit to the task of fixing bugs and problems nonstop. The result is that, over the past 3 weeks, I’ve released around twenty new builds of the game, each containing at least 10 fixes, changes, or additions that differentiate them from the previous build. That’s around 200 changes to the game in 3 weeks. And this comes immediately after a 3-month-long crunch period where I did practically nothing but work on 1980s Mode to get it out as fast as possible to prove how quickly I could give people everything they ever wanted out of Yandere Simulator.

So, where does that leave us? Well…

I, really, really, really miss doing things that are not Yandere Simulator. I would like to take a break from working on Yandere Sim and do something else for a little while. A few weeks minimum, maybe a month maximum.

Of course, it’s extremely easy to predict how people would react if I formally announced that I was taking a vacation. The majority of reactions will fall into one of two categories:

  1. It’s perfectly okay to take a break after working on one project for seven years.
  2. It’s completely unacceptable to take a break when you still haven’t finished that thing you started seven years ago.

Some of the more nuanced reactions might be:

  1. If you take a break, you will regain your energy and be able make progress faster when you return!
  2. If you take a break, you will lose all of your momentum and will never be able to get it back.

Or:

  1. Even if you intend to take a short break, you might get distracted by the allure of a new project and your “short” break will turn into a long one.
  2. You can take a break if you want, but it would be unethical to accept Patreon donations while you’re on vacation, so you have to shut down your Patreon if you want to take a break.

The sheer amount of disapproval I’m sure to encounter is almost enough to make me dismiss the idea altogether. But, there is a part of me that hopes that 1980s Mode and the 200+ improvements that have been made to the game over the past three weeks are enough to make people say, “Okay, YandereDev, you’ve earned a break for a little while.”

So, what would I actually do if I took a break?

I want to catch up on all the highly-anticipated video games that came out in 2021 that I completely ignored for the sake of working on 1980s Mode. I want to watch a couple of anime and movies that came out this year that I’ve been anticipating for a really long time. And, most of all, I want to work on a game prototype. Not a complete project…just a prototype. I’ve got a game idea that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about for the past few months, and I really want to set aside some time to test out the idea and see if it would be as cool as it is in my mind.

Will I actually take this break that I’m agonizing over so much? Maybe not. Maybe it won’t even happen. After all, I haven’t taken a vacation since 2016. Every year, I think, “I’ll take a vacation,” and then I never actually do it. Maybe this break will fall into that category. Maybe I’ll just keep releasing daily bug-fixing builds for the next few weeks, then feel pressured to release a video, then feel pressured to do the next thing, and the thing after that, and the thing after that, and no break will ever happen. That’s how it always is, after all.

So, if I’m not able to commit to the idea of a break at this point in time, why am I even bringing it up here? To gauge your reaction, and to prepare you in case it actually does get announced at some point in the near future. If it does happen, I just wouldn’t want it to seem like a surprise that comes out of nowhere.

Anyway…I hope that I’ve built up enough goodwill that you’d be willing to be lenient with me if I did ever announce that I was taking a break for a little while.

In the meantime, I hope that you get a little bit of enjoyment out of my silly little Witch Game prototype.

…oh! I almost forgot. I’m releasing another bug-fixing build today. Here is the changelog:

Fixes and Changes

  • If you bump into a student council member 5 times, they will push you. This was true even if you bumped into them 4 times at 7:30 AM and then once again at 5:30 PM. That was a little bit silly, so, from now on, the “bump counter” will reset after attending class. Student Council members will now only pepper-spray you for bumping into them at least 5 times within the same “phase” of the day. (This goes for delinquents, as well.)
  • If Raibaru was distracted with a dropped weapon right before Osana’s phone call event began, Raibaru would carry the weapon everywhere and forget about returning it where it belonged. This bug has been fixed.
  • Fixed bug that prevented the game from taking screenshots properly when the player attempted to save a photograph taken with Yandere-chan’s smartphone.
  • Fixed bug that would make Ryoba’s hands appear in front of her camera while she was aiming the camera she got from the Photography Club.
  • Adjusted the “gazing at photo of Senpai” animation to remove an issue where Ryoba’s hand was clipping into her body.
  • Fixed bug that made the incorrect audio jingle play when the player obtained a “C” grade at the end of the game.
  • From now on, the Yakuza will disappear from the street forever if his brother is killed at any point in time.
  • Fixed bug that caused the Counselor/Headmaster/Journalist to use the wrong portraits in 1980s Mode.
  • Fixed bug that was preventing the game form lowering the player’s reputation for skipping school.
  • Fixed bug that made the player’s reputation go down for taking a nap on Sunday.

  1. *bangs fists on table* Team Take A Break!
It’s important to take breaks! Your health, both physical and mental, will always more important and I’m sure you’re suffering through burnout after all this time.
It’s also good to take a step back for a while. I do it a lot with my writing and every time I come back thinking ‘oh wow, this isn’t as bad as I thought it was :o’ and have new ideas about how to go about something I wouldn’t had thought of at the time.
Plus engaging in other media can help recharge your inspiration.

  2. i found a bug if you try to frame a student for murder and try to bathe and change your close the game will either froze or the clothes wont change (sorry for my bad english)

  3. In my country, they don’t celebrate Halloween, but in any case, happy Halloween, Yandere Dev! I will accept any decision you make about what to do next. A break will help not only to relax but also to take a fresh look at things. The fact that after so many years you have not abandoned the project causes me great respect. Of course you deserve a break!

  4. Happy Halloween, YanDev!!
Please, I beg of thou, please take that creak! This may be a somewhat unpopular opinion, but you’ve completely and 100% earned it!
(I mean, I cant even stick with a project for more than a few hours and YanSim is over here like: w e a k)

  5. Hey, you’ve mentioned that hiring a programmer to optimize YanSim’s code would take a lot of time and you wouldn’t be able to make any changes to the game, but since you want to take a break (which you totally deserve for the amount of things you’ve done for the past month, it’s like a brand new game), now’s your chance to hire a programmer who would optimize the code for you while you’d be working on your prototype, reading manga, playing games and everything you’ve wanted to do, why not take this opportunity? Fans would definitely be happy that the game runs better, and “oh, so you have a Patreon, but you aren’t even working on the game for a month” would be totally invalid as a lot of improvements to the code would be made, which possibly could even fix that boss bug you’ve made a post about recently (maybe it’s some kind of overflow related to how long the game has been running (maybe it’s because of that hidden timer, or it could be because of it), not the in-game time), or you could hire someone who would replace current character models with new ones, allowing for far more customizability of characters, or even both, coming back from your break would then be like coming back to a renovated house or office with fresh air and more comfortable furniture after a long vacation
With that said, enjoy your vacation if you decide to take a break and Happy Halloween โค

  6. I was already begging for you to take a vacation back in November of 2019, and now we’re two years later and that wish still isn’t granted. So I’m more than okay if you’d take one.

By the way, when I used to visit hate forums of Yandere Simulator to see what they were saying and defend the game a bit, a point that was often brought is how you should actually take a break from the game in order to get better and more motivated. So, I don’t even think that the majority of *those* people would be mad at you honestly.

  7. Watching you create this prototype was absolutely incredible. Programming can be exceptionally absorbing and at times overwhelming but breaks are necessary, Iโ€™m sure you will find that your creativity and productivity will improve if you decide to go on a vacation. I also have a similar mindset and never take my own advice ^_^

Of course I’m interested in whatever you have ideas for but always look out for your health and happiness first. Happy Halloween

  8. Ah I have encountered a bug! I killed Kaga (1980’s mode) most people saw cause it was by the lockers then I cleaned up the evidence by putting her into the acid in the science club. So when the police came it said, “The police discover multiple corpses on school grounds and then it just continued to say that, it was in a loop I guess?

    • Kaga? There is a character named Kaga in 1980s Mode? Who is it?

How did you get her to the acid without getting spotted?

I think I’d need to see a video to understand how I’m supposed to replicate those circumstances and experience the bug for myself…

  9. Dude, take a break. My philosophy in life is you can’t please everyone. Even if you do all the right things people will still find a reason to complain.

It’s healthy and logical to take a break to prevent burn out. Many lead psychologists suggest this. It’s half the reason there are labor laws. Because it’s detrimental to your health to work too much. It’s why we have strict hours to work, breaks, vacations, shifts, and laws in place. Health and safety.

  10. Just do it. Whatever, Alex. I know the satisfaction it gives to finish those anime left lingering in your head. If you think you won’t lose the pacing of things by relaxing for some days, then just do it. To your haters, you are always doing nothing,so there is also that.. But with the attention put on purpose to 1989, it’d be understandable why to hesitate, but a week or two wouldn’t make a difference to anyone. So whenever you feel like it, go for the anime.

  11. You probably won’t read this message or even if this message will get to you, but it would be nice if you take a vacation anyway
it will be good for you

  12. Yandere dev, as I recall you said we can collect things from senpai each week but (i haven’t checked yet so) I haven’t really heard of collecting other things just the pencil… Does this make sense?

  13. You could dramatically increase the amount of people playing YanSim by just taking a bit of time to export a Mac build, which is something people have been asking for for YEARS. More people = More fan support. You have made multiple statements in the past saying it would be available “after Osana” and “after the demo is released” but there’s still nothing yet. I appreciate you’re busy implementing features into the game for ONE demographic of people – that being Windows players – but the fans have been asking for this for a really long time ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

      • Also if i remember correctly, the reason why Dev can’t even so much as get started on a Mac build is because he doesn’t own a Mac computer to test on.

  14. Happy Halloween Yandere Dev and please do what you feel is right for you you have been working for many months to give the the full yandere simulator experience and I couldnโ€™t be more greatful to you for that but please whenever you feel like you need a break please take one you deserve to be happy too and you have made us happy for all these years with a wonderful game please do what you feel is right cause we can care about you and your happiness have a good halloween.

  15. I think you’ve more than proven the development of the game is important to you. An occasional break is good. If you work too long without a vacation you can get burned out and start to resent what you’re working on. The fact you’ve been working on the game for seven years and are still dedicated to completing it is impressive. I would absolutely love to see Yandere Simulator become a finished game. It looks incredible and obviously has the potential to be amazing. It would be a shame to have invested so much time and energy to finish with something that you know could have been so much better. Take some time off, ignore the gremlins, and recharge. I look forward to your next update.

  16. Hey Yanderedev I found a possible bug. I tried doing the fan elimination to Osana but when I went into the find locker menu it won’t let me scroll down. Every time I try to move it brings the position back to Senpai. Can you please have a look at this?

    • Sorry for this Yanderedev I figured out how to fix it. I reset the week and it fixed itself. No need to look into it unless it pops up for u or someone else again

  17. i just want to point out something that may be curious. The bug that was fixed in this build was showing the 202x portraits of the Headmaster,Councelor and the journalist on the 1980s mode. Guess who was in the journalist portrait?,yes, Info chan, it maw mean absolutely nothing but it is kinda ironical

  18. Yandere Dev, you have done such an amazing job!! Look at all your work! You should take a break. I mean, I’m writing a book. And that book it the start to my fantasy book world. (I’m talking about a whole new world with vampires witches demons werewolves pixies and even thing from my own imagination. It’ll be like a series of books all about certain creatures and their stories) And, I need breaks….a lot. So, from creator to creator (kind of), take a break. That way your mind will refresh and you can bring new items to the table! Don’t so so hard on yourself. So, take a break. It’s been a pleasure following the devolvement of yandere simulator! Take care.

  19. Though I would personally advocate that you take a break (you’ve more than earned a lot of breaks) I have 2 suggestions as to how you can pull this off:
    – work on one last major objective for Yandere Simulator for November, take the whole โ€‹of December off, and resume a week after New Year (a week is good to get rid of the New Year hangover)
    – work until mid-December, release a Christmas update, Enjoy Christmas and New Year plus some extra in January, start working on February 1st and then post again on the 15th.

Either way, you get at least a month to rest and enjoy a cooling-off period before going back to development, and the….. less understanding people will have a harder time spinning this against you. After all, what bastard wants to make someone work in December? THE holiday month? You’re the a-holes here not the guy trying to take a break.

Whatever you decide, I hope you get the rest you deserve. Thank you as always Yandere Dev and oh, I almost forgot……

  20. If the colliders stop working after some time, maybe they are entering sleep mode? Try switching the wand detection to continuous detection and set sleep mode to never sleep.
If it doesnโ€™t help then I have no idea what it could be.

Iโ€™m not experienced with Unity development, but a weird issue similar to this happens some time ago with another game engine (sorry, I donโ€™t remember the engine name)
As I remember, the issue was related to engine memory management and scenary generation: as several โ€œhoursโ€ (real or accelerated) of game passed, items storage gets satured and engine discards some items to manage the new ones. โ€œDiscardedโ€ item gets renderised as they are actives in the game session.
This was solved by deep touch the engine itself.

Someone else made some tests and Iโ€™m pretty sure this bug is linked to how much in-game time we actually play.

    This is what She did:
She replicated the bug multiple times by following those steps and She found out that the bug happens 1.66 seconds (She timed it with her phone, so Itโ€™s not the most accurate measure) after 1:42 pm. That means, after 6h 42 mins and about 1 second after the beginning of the day (or 24 121 seconds).
Then, on a new day She fast forwarded time from the beginning of the day to 9:40, She went to class (at exactly 9:40), She fast forwarded time from about 1:00 pm to 5:00, and the bug happened seconds after 5:01. She experienced the bug after 6h 41 mins and a couple of seconds of actual playtime. She guesses that the missing minute passed while She was attending class, but shes not sure of that.

to specify, 6h and 42 minutes are in in-game time, whereas 1.66 seconds is in real time.

You mean after 5 times they will pepper spray not push?
