Moving Forward

I’ve been exhibiting horribly self-destructive behavior on a regular basis for a long time now.

As a result of the many conversations I’ve had over the past few days, I think I can pinpoint the cause. My downward spiral is the result of consistently making incredibly unwise lifestyle choices that have caused my mental health to deteriorate massively over time.

It didn’t hit me until recently just how bad things had gotten. Haven’t left the house since July 2019, no real-life acquaintances, 16+ hours on the computer every day, no vacations in half a decade, prioritizing work above my physical health…it shouldn’t be any surprise whatsoever that when you allow both your body and mind to completely waste away, you dissolve into a “mistake machine” – a person that is capable of nothing but bad decisions, who exists solely to cause problems for others.

Since the last blog post, a lot of people have reached out to me to share the same advice: “See a therapist.” “Get hobbies that don’t involve a computer or TV screen.” “Step away from game development for a few months.” All of it can be summarized as: “Start making healthy life choices that will turn you into more of a normal human being.” And, I honestly can’t argue with that.

This might sound like a really random time to launch into an anecdote, but…I’d like to mention something really quick.

Recently, somebody messaged me to tell me something. A few years ago, when his girlfriend was on the verge of suicide, she sent me a fan mail. I responded to her to thank her for her kind words. Apparently, this cheered her up so much that she stopped thinking about killing herself. She’s still alive today. He just wanted to tell me, “Thank you for saving my girlfriend’s life.”

I keep thinking about that story, and other stories like it. Times when someone reached out to me to let me know that I cured their depression or saved their life. Those stories make me feel like I have the potential to affect the world in a positive way. But, that’s only if I stop making such dumb decisions all the time. And I can only stop making dumb decisions if I get healthy. And the only way to get healthy is to start making healthier life choices.

If I want to do more good than harm to the world, I have to get my head straight. That might involve spending less time at the PC, less time on the Internet…and less time developing the game.

A lot of people have been asking me if the recent controversy will cause me to stop developing the game, or give the game away to another developer. I’m not ready to answer those questions. I would need to do a tremendous amount of thinking before I could make any monumental decisions like that.

I really enjoy working on Yandere Simulator. (If I didn’t, then I wouldn’t be willing to do it continuously for 9 years.) The thought of taking time away from it makes me feel incredibly sad. But, neglecting absolutely every aspect of my mental and physical health has caused me to devolve into a danger to myself and others, and that’s not something I want to be. I don’t want to step away from development…but, perhaps I should, at least long enough to decide the best way to proceed from here.

The project doesn’t need to outright die, but it definitely should be paused until I’ve made significant progress towards evolving into a much healthier person.

Over the years, Yandere Simulator and myself have been through countless controversies. I’m sorry for not properly addressing most of those controversies – and for responding to some those controversies in ways that only made things worse. There are still a lot of things I want to address in a proper manner one day, but now is not the time.

I’d like to thank the animators, artists, composers, modelers, voice actors, and YouTubers who helped to make Yandere Simulator into what it is today. Even if we won’t continue on this journey together, I’ll always remain thankful to you for the assistance that you once granted me.

I’ve received a lot of messages since the last blog post. Many of them were harsh – rightfully so – but there were also a lot of messages equivalent to, “I want to see you improve your mental health and finish your game. I’ve been following the project for 8+ years, and I don’t want to see it end like this.”

Yandere Simulator’s audience has shrunken over the years. But, despite everything, there are still a lot of people in this world who love Yandere Simulator. They love the characters, the setting, and the story. They enjoy speculating about what will happen towards the end of the game, what occurred in the unrevealed parts of the backstory, and what plot twists might be waiting in the lore. They want to learn how the Aishi Condition began, what secrets the Saikou family is hiding, and what is underneath the cherry tree.

I don’t want to let them down. I owe it to them. For giving me 9 years of their attention, I owe them answers, I owe them satisfaction, and I owe them closure.

I don’t want to cancel the game. I want to keep developing it. But, I don’t think I can do that if I keep being a “mistake machine.” I need to find a much better work/life balance, because the current balance of “100:0” has led me to nothing but a severely damaged psyche and behavior that is as destructive to others as it is to myself.

I can’t guarantee when will be the next time that I’ll write a blog post. I’m not even sure what the next blog post will be about – a big announcement, a bug-fixing build, or something completely different. It’s hard to tell what the future is going to hold. But, I just wanted to let you know that I probably won’t be posting as frequently as I previously was, or updating the game as frequently as I previously was, either. All of the steps that I need to take to become a better person involve spending less time in this chair, and more time outdoors.

During my time away, I’ll be spending a lot of time thinking about exactly how I should proceed from this point forward. I’ll be considering all possible options – even the uncomfortable ones, such as reducing the scope of the game to make it into a project that would be much easier to finish with limited resources, and the absolute last resort of handing off development to someone else.

For what it’s worth, I apologize for everything. And, I thank you for following the development of Yandere Simulator.

  1. Take the time off you need to develop the game into the project you want it, and envision it to be. I hope you get better, and aren’t forced to reduce the scope of the game. Good luck on your mental health journey, we’ll be here when you get back.

  2. Listen, if there’s anyone who could complete a game like this, it’s you. All the people who tried to develop their own “Yandere Simulator” would never have been able to create something that you already did. Almost every single YanSim clone that I saw did not have the appealing graphics that your game has. I am certain that the lore that you created is magnificent, very few people could create something better with the resources you had.

I know that the situation must be very stressful. Take a few months if you need to. I’ll be waiting for your return.

  3. Take your time, yanderedev. It’s really necessary for you to recover now. No game or work should be more important than your mental and physical health. I’m sure there is still fans that will support you in this, such as myself. I wish you good luck in this self-improvement journey:3

  4. Take the break your health needs. First of all, think about yourself. I have a full understanding of your situation and believe that you did everything possible to apologize. I will accept any decision you make about the future of game development.

  5. I think taking a break and working on your mental and physical help is so important and I’m glad you’re going to do this. I’ve been a fan of this game since 2014 and even though I want it to be finished sooner than later, I would much rather you be taking care of yourself. I do have to say, I hope you DONT sell it to someone else, because I can’t imagine Yandere Simulator without Yandere Dev! If you want to scale down the game, I think you should scrap the concept of female senpai and male yandere entirely. I also think having less side lore, like the Basu sisters and the dudes who talk about anime, could help. Those are fun and cute details, but they take voiced lines and animations that could probably go to more important things. (Unless of course they have a more important place in the game I’m just not aware of.)

Anyways, for a long time, I’ve been ok waiting as long as it needs to take for the game to be finished. So please, take care of yourself! Maybe go to the gym every week, start a healthy diet, and I’m not sure about your religious belief’s, if you have any, but prayer could help, and talking to a priest or pastor. I have been praying for you and everyone involved in this situation. I wish I could talk to you, though, I don’t know if that would really help or not.

Also, I wanted to add that you and your game have helped me in times when my mental health was bad. I used to watch you stream on Twitch and whenever you responded to my comments, it made me so happy! Your game and characters have also inspired some of my own original characters for a story I’ve been working on!

So again I hope only for the best for you and am supporting you 100%! Take care of yourself :’)

      • Good idea,
Please try to sort things out,
I have one goal for you
Reflect on what you did while you’re taking a break and set yourself rules for when you come back, and make us a promise, what you promise us is up to you, depending on your reflections and don’t let us down again… i don’t usually give people chances over something like this, and there are plenty of people who won’t… I shouldn’t either. If it were to happen again, it will be it. I don’t think you are a bad man, i think you just made a bad mistake…

        DON’T LET ME BE WRONG!

      • ok, i love the fact that you followed our suggestion to pause development, we love u dev, cant wait to see you again!
        happy break!

  6. I think “reducing the scope” of the project is a better idea than many would think. For example, if you don’t have enough resources for voiceovers and cutscenes in normal mode, it can be made as a 1980 mode. I’m sure the bulk of players would be happy with that level of content. And someday later, when everything gets better and resources are available, you can make the game more detailed.

I hope you don’t handle off development to someone else, because I, like many, believe you are the only one who can develop and finish this game.

  7. Although I myself still cant forgive you for your actions, I do understand that you really are trying to atone for it. I hope you can take time away from the game for a while, and take as much time as you can to think about everything that’s happened.

  8. Your creation is great and I hope you don’t hand Yandere Simulator over to anyone else because I, like many others, believe you are the only one who can develop and complete this game.

You need time to rest, eat healthy, and your mental health is very important, you should see a psychiatrist. I think you can listen to music to relieve stress. take care of yourself. Good luck on your mental health journey!

In addition, I think the background music of Yandere Simulator is very nice, and some of the characters and settings of Yandere Simulator have also provided inspiration for the original characters I have been creating! I wish you all the best again and sincerely support you! come on!

  9. I’ve had my suspicions about your mental state for a long time, i’m finally proven right at your expense, please take all the time you need *most* of us are here for you 🙂

    • An example of my suspicions were further proven when i noticed how similar osanas stalker was to you, (minus the uh h-vent), according to his sister he hadnt left the house in a long time, you also looked the same, for a long time i’ve suspected you based the stalker off yourself.

  10. Yandere dev i hope the game will get finished even if it takes more then 5 years just now foucus on yourself now you need to rest for some time i hope you will take care of yourself

  11. Hi YandereDev, I know I’m just another person on the internet… but I personally agree with people that you should get therapy, you’re a hard worker, but this has caused a massive issue. Many people are worried for your well-being. I’ve had my suspicions on your mental state for awhile and I believe it’s time you get lots of help. Many of us including myself cannot forgive you for those actions… but we are pleased to know that you’re trying to fix this. Your game has brought tons of people all around the world joy, that’s something to be proud of. Take all the time you need. Take care, YandereDev.

  12. I’m sure most people appreciate your honesty in addressing what’s been going on now. Taking a step back to focus on your health and well-being is a good move. Take your time, and make a good recovery

  13. Alex, you’re the only one who could ever turn YandereSim into the game it’s meant to be. It’s your life’s work. Nobody else would ever get this right. I know it feels like your world’s been shattered into a million pieces right now, but trust me when I say that things will get better. Controversies come and go, you know they always have, but you have a bond to this game that’s stronger than anything else.

Take your time, get some fresh air, let your body start to heal a bit from all the stress that these stupid internet bullies have inflicted on you. And when you feel like working on the game again, do that too. Don’t worry if you’ve waited long enough, or waited too long, or if the thing you want to work on isn’t on the crowdfunding checklist, etc. Just trust your instincts and do whatever feels right.

Hang in there – you got this!

  14. Don’t apologize for anything yandev! I support you, do take a well deserved break, your health matters more than a game, see ya soon!

  15. Rest, please. This whole nightmare on the net, this cancellation, can only make it worse:(

I believe in you and on your side💞

  16. Hello, Yande Dev, Here are my suggestions on what you can make so you can live for yourself and make your game.1) Maybe you should get a partner or someone who can help you make your game so you will be able to do the game faster and live your own life. As an example, if I am correct, you say that you are working 12 hours a day, so it would be better if you worked on the game for 6 hours and your helper worked for 6 hours too, so you wouldn’t lose anything.
    2) Give a game to someone that you can trust, take a break for a year or two years, and tell the trusted person the story line of your game.
    3) It can sound bad, but maybe you can give this game to someone else so people will stop hating your game just because you are the developer. At least you can give this game to someone and tell everyone that you are giving the game to someone else, but still help the person you give the game to, but from the shadows, so no one will know that you were part of the development until the megami comes.

  17. Yan Dev, Even though you have made a huge mistake, I believe in you. Everyone makes mistakes. The important thing is realizing that you made a mistake and learning from it. I’m going to trust you that you won’t do something like that ever again. Continue this amazing game’s development. I know you can do this.

  18. Hi YandereDev! I´ve been watching gameplays of your game and playing it since I was little, I know that perhaps it´s not very appropriate content for someone of the age I was, but due to the popularity of Yandere Sim, especially at that time, it was almost inevitable not to know it. I´ve been wanting to see it finished for many years and there are many people who want that too. It´s obvious that we want to see it finished but we also understand that you haven´t been okay for a while and we know that you need to put your mental health over your project, take your time, perhaps you have not made the best decisions and this was very hard to you but you´re in time to give yourself a break and try to find peace. Try to do what YOU think is the best for both you and the yandere sim fans, even if it´s a hard decision and maybe it isn´t what you wanted when you started creating it, but your physical and mental health is more important than Yandere Sim and it would be selfish if i said that it isn´t, I hope you get better 🙂

  19. You need to actually read the “victims” statement and rethink what you’re typing because you’re clearly in desperate need of a reality check..

  20. i think that somo times away from the game is not a bad idea but for us who want to play the game and enjoy some new things not as regulary but you should post some updates some times

  21. I hope you will come as soon as possible back yandev, i was really afraid that this game would’ve ended but thankfully or hopefully not, i hope you’ll be doing better then come back as soon as possible. I can’t wait for the full release of the game!

  22. For real take your time Yendere Simulator is a really good game and I start to really love the game in 2020 but I think you should finish the game but first you have to recover physically and mentally anyway good luck with the rest YendereDev 🙂

  23. Yan Dev, as someone who grew up with this game, I really hope you take your time to recover. You made a big mistake and I can see why, you sacrifice your mental health for this game and that’s not right. I hope you don’t quit the game but take a break and make a better schedule, organize your life and learn from your mistakes. I hope you think about everything, take your time, we will be waiting for you.

  24. We’re glad you’re taking a break from the game development, take as much time as you need, we all hope you will get better soon. And thank you for the amazing game that is being developed, take care.

  25. I am so glad you are taking some time to focus on your mental health. I have been a yandere simulator fan since 2016 and I am so glad you are doing this. Take all the time you need to think this through and Have a great rest of your day. 👍😁

  26. im really proud of you for coming clean and admitting fault. it takes ALOT to accept your faults, especially ones as big as this. I still love you and support you fully, YandereDev. Remember that you are a person, and not evil at all. im sure we’ve all said and done some questionable and creepy things in our lifetime but we learn from it, and it looks like you have. please don’t listen to the hate, and I can’t wait to see what the game will look like in the future when YOU feel better and ready. lots of love xxxx

  27. U really need to take this break really dev u have worked a lot on this game and now it is time for u to rest and see your life. Everyone is getting older and u too have wasted enough years now this is ur time to make up for all the years that were wasted and live and enjoy ur life. Thank u for everything. I wish u happiness always.🤍🤍🤍

  28. Hiiiiiii, are you going to record vlogs for youtube? İ think it could help for people to understand why you made yourself a ‘mistake machine’ . Maybe few people would understand your situation by looking at your face and your lifestyle Andddd THEY WOULD seeeee hOW different and hard it is. Some people take the camera and talk for half minutes and its make it better. So many people dont see your life , your mentality with your eyes.. THey have different life style, friends, family, money , food AND healty brain yeah healty mind. They must see how weird you live your life.

    • Even though he would do that stuff with the best intentions, the supreme haters are focusing on everything he does and says, to try and find / make up anything else to attack him with. This really isnt the best time.

(note: the supreme haters are the ones who only care about attacking Yandere Dev, to the point where they will delete anything the girl writes about the situation, and even ban her for not going along with what they already decided is true. Most people, even most very critical people who can’t keep supporting yandere dev, are not part of this group.)

  29. You talked with the girl very weirdly but she acted and talked like an adult with you and you talked with her more open. Both weirdos but i do support you uhmm you are going to change everything haha

    • Keep in mind *a LOT* of the evidence was made up. (for example, texting screenshots, editing what he said, etc)
What the girl posted debunks the accusations. People are assuming it is all true what youtubers are making up, and I believe the girl has the right to say what happened, and she did.
Youtubers like Ally are making this much, MUCH more serious than it actually was. They’ll throw ANYTHING at Yandev to make him the monster, to make her the victim, which she has said she is not, and he is not. They both made a huge mistake.

  30. You must share vlogs on youtube ! definitely !! Talk about your life and go therapist ( for real brother, at least for video) 1 week of your life for every vlog video. And You are going to glow up . When people see you they might think he is trying soooo hard and he is sharing it what everrr. İF you are going to DİSAPPEAR İTS BADDD. PEOPLE ARE GOİNG TO REMEMBER THİS THİNGS ONLYYYY. NOT YOUR GETTİNG BETTER PLANS.

  31. I’ve been thinking long and hard about all this. I’ve seen people who are sticking by you and people who have given up. I’ll be honest, you’re on thin ice for me. What you did was utterly indefensible. The only good thing is that this has Finally gotten you to consider going to therapy and getting a better work/life balance. I don’t know how many more controversies I can take… I understand that there will be people who will be dissapointed or upset if you work on the game less. To an extent I guess I’m one of them. This game is incredibly important to me for several reasons. But your health and well being (and the health and well being of those around you) should ALWAYS come first. I’m totally cool with slowing/pausing development if it means you get the break/therapy you need. Thank you for developing Yandere Simulator, I’ll be here when you come back.

  32. You havent left since july 2019 dude really, take the rest of the year off and touch some grass (unironically). Game is already massive and has a story move, everything else is an extra for me.

  33. Take the time you need, but listen…if you really can’t finish the game or more controversy happens. Give it to someone else, let them finish it, we love yandere simulator. We need to see it thrive.

  34. It saddens me but I am very glad that you are going to take care of yourself in a more appropriate way. Honestly, if the game is ultimately developed by someone else, I highly doubt I will play it, since I would feel very bad for not having your essence present in the game. I don’t really like many of the “completed” Yandere Simulator attempts, for the reason that they are not the same. And it would be exactly the same if in the end you gave away/sold the game, so for that reason, just take the time you need, yandere simulator wouldn’t be the same without you. (It may sound selfish that I only want you well and healthy so that you can finish the game, but throughout the time in which I have followed the development of yan sim, I have held you dear and I will always love you despite the bad comments that people say about you) Get well soon ❤

  35. Hello, Yan dev
I have been a Latin follower of the game since it came out, I have always really liked the game in general and I will always and will continue waiting for the end

Take the time you need, I will always wait, get well soon!

No quiero justificar absolutamente nada YandereDev.

  37. Sometimes it’s important to take a break and think about things outside, or talk to someone who can guide you to a better path, I really hope you do that and you can have a better life.

  38. I live a life similar to yours, alone, and on the computer. But I like it. You have to try to find balance, love your work and yourself. Please take care.
