February 16th and 17th Bug-Fixing Update

Bonus update! I got a lot of very valuable feedback on yesterday’s build, so I decided to fix most of the bugs that people reported and make some miscellaneous improvements to the game:

February 16th changes:

  • Disabled something called “Occlusion Culling” which was preventing the game from working on computers that have an Intel graphics card. (Occlusion culling can improve a game’s performance greatly, so eventually I should try and figure out how to re-activate it without affecting Intel users.)
  • If you press the Escape key or choose the “Quit” option in the pause menu, the game asks you to confirm whether or not you wish to quit the game, instead of closing immediately.
  • It is no longer possible to talk to NPCs during circumstances when Yandere-chan would not be able to talk (such as while laughing, attacking, or throwing a corpse).
  • When Yandere-chan was bloody, a bug caused nearby NPCs to become bloody as well. This bug has been fixed.
  • On an Xbox gamepad, click the right stick to re-center the camera (this feature may be removed one day).
  • Inside of a building, you can no longer stab NPCs who are on the floor above you or beneath you.
  • It is no longer possible to have a friendly chat with NPCs while dragging a corpse around.
  • Improved the “Pass Time” code so that it should no longer undershoot the target time.
  • Added a new easter egg, activated by pressing one of the letter keys on the keyboard.
  • Attempted to fix the “schoolgirls spin in circles when walking down stairs” bug.
  • Replaced “Ambient Obscurance” effect with real-time shadows.
  • You can no longer stab NPCs through walls.
  • Disabled V-sync.

February 17th changes:

  • Pressing the escape key and then choosing “No” returns the player to gameplay immediately, instead of sending them to the phone menu.
  • Shadows change direction as time passes, simulating the effect of the sun moving across the sky over the course of the day.
  • The phone menu can now be navigated with the WASD keys in addition to the arrow keys.
  • There was a bug involving running and dragging ragdolls that has been fixed.
  • Toast and toaster can now become splattered with blood.
  • Support for non-16:9 aspect ratios has been added.
  • The incinerator works again.

If you haven’t seen the Feb 15th update yet, be sure to check it out!

  1. The new graphics settings are terrific! My only complaints would have to be with the PC controls, though. Most “issues” revolve around the use of the phone. While I’m sure you already had plans to fix/update them, I’ll try to detail it as best as I can:

    – Pressing Esc, then no opens the phone. Not sure if that’s intended, but that’s not much of a problem, I guess. I’d expect a return to normal gameplay after pressing no, though. Just a small nitpick.

    – The controls to skip time and general phone handling feel… Inconsistent. You press Enter/Return to open the phone. Then you have to navigate with the arrow keys, over the WASD used for walking. I feel like the menu should have the choice of WASD or arrow keys for navigation. Maybe even mouse?

    – Along the same lines, pressing E to confirm after pressing Enter and using the arrow keys feels a bit spread out over the keyboard.

    – Going back a bit, I feel like maybe another key would be useful for phone navigation. Maybe F, if another nearby key isn’t already bound to it in the closer-to-final build. Again, nitpicking.

    – I’m sure the graphic used for the phone isn’t final, though the realistic hand is a bit awkward in the anime setting. Also, that phone has like 5 cameras. Holy shit. Who needs that many cameras? I don’t. Though if you’re Yandere, maybe you need as many cameras as possible to capture pictures of Senpai.

    – While in Windowed mode, the mouse can easily escape the Unity window by moving far enough. Not sure if that’s actually fixable or not, due to the nature of Unity in general.

    -̶ ̶I̶ ̶f̶e̶e̶l̶ ̶l̶i̶k̶e̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶w̶e̶a̶p̶o̶n̶s̶ ̶U̶I̶ ̶s̶h̶o̶u̶l̶d̶ ̶b̶e̶ ̶g̶r̶a̶y̶,̶ ̶w̶i̶t̶h̶ ̶h̶i̶g̶h̶l̶i̶g̶h̶t̶e̶d̶ ̶w̶e̶a̶p̶o̶n̶s̶ ̶b̶e̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶p̶i̶n̶k̶.̶
    – – After thinking this one over, it probably matches the general UI better to have it be pink with non-pink highlight.

    – I can’t recreate this 100% of the time, though sometimes when restarting and going to the pass time option right away, it loads the Xbox controller button icons before the Keyboard icons. Maybe it was something I pressed, though I have no controllers hooked up to my computer at the moment. If I figure out a way to replicate this consistently, I’ll let you know.

    – If you have control over it, I feel like the fastest graphics option(s) should start with Anti-Aliasing off (Assuming that’s what pressing 0 does. Looks like it, I think). I have absolutely no problems running the game myself, though I’m sure there’s someone whose computer can’t handle it for some reason. The highest ones make sense leaving it on.

TL;DR: I feel like the keyboard controls weren’t really optimized for the phone, with Enter/Arrow Keys being so far from Q and E. Maybe add WASD/mouse support for the phone? Plus a few other small nitpicks.

    • Oh, before I forget, another point I’m sure you already plan to take care of. Shadows remain stationary during the day, instead of moving to match the time of day. But again, you probably got that planned.

  2. But for some unknow reason I can’t use the incinerator…

And I want to know, when could we clean the blood from corpses ?
    sorry for my english.

    • Aw, damn it. I broke the Incinerator with my most recent changes to the game’s code…

I’ll fix the bug and upload a new build with a fixed incinerator.

I can’t predict when I will be able to implement the ability to clean up blood. My work schedule is very unpredictable. I’m sorry.

  3. Are there any plans to change the controls for the phone menu on Keyboard? Hitting Enter, then arrows, then E is just all over the place. Would it be possible to open the menu with E and use the mouse to select menu items? Or is it a limitation of the engine?

  4. I LOVE the idea of your game! I can’t wait to buy it when it comes out!

The attack on titan easter egg made me laugh so hard xD It was so cute!

  5. WHERE ARE THE DRILL, MAN

Also, as soon as I unfuck my paypal I’m gonna throw some cashmoney your way, take that as an incentive to IMPLANT DRILLS ALREADY

  6. Hey I love what you have gotten done so far! I love the concept and thought I could just throw out some ideas for the final release. Before in another post you mentioned you could attend class and whether its in the style of Persona or Bully. I was thinking that each class you pass you get special awards like say new skills, being able to crafting new items (if there will be a crafting system) or, whatever bonus it may be but, one idea I had was a way to hide or “dispose” of a body for certain classes. Say you take a cooking class in the game (if there will be one) and yandere-chan learns how to cook at sort of food. So once the class is fully complete and you pass it you could be able to put a dismembered dead body into the school lunch hiding all of the evidence without anyone knowing, unless she is caught of course. I wasn’t too sure if should post this since this may be crossing the line a bit but, I just wanted to hear other peoples thoughts on this idea.

      • The thing is though, it would probably only be usable once, like the ”push-girl-off-of-roof” one, because eating another human makes you sick, so everyone would get sick and you wouldn’t be able to do it again because they threw the food out/locked the kitchen from students or something. Or maybe it’s inspected and found to have human flesh in it, causing the school atmosphere to drop, but they don’t know who did it.

    • I suppose it would theoretically be possible, just like how it’s possible in Hitman / Metal Gear Solid.

If you’re trying to kill all students without being spotted, you’d have to systematically kill them in a specific order:

      1. The ones who are farthest away from any other students, whose corpses won’t be discovered anytime soon.
      2. The ones who are farthest away from the school exit, so it would take a long time for them to try and escape.
      3. The ones who are bunched together in a small group, so you can take out several at once.
      4. The ones who are bunched together in a huge group, because it will be guaranteed that at least one of them will escape and tell a teacher / warn other students / try to escape to call the cops.
      5. Whatever stragglers remain after all of the above have been killed.

If you just started running around indiscriminately killing people without a plan / blocking their exits, a lot of people would escape the school and call the cops on you.

  7. THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!!
    Why? I ask again, WHY?!?
Is there no love for the classics?
Is this some conspiracy against jam?
    IS NOTHING SACRED?!?

    Please see this picture at

I patiently await for the bug fix to properly illustrate the jam on toast. Thank you.

    • There will be a video uploaded within the next 2 weeks showcasing how police factor into Yandere Sim. Until then, here’s a brief summary of how it works:

      1. If an NPC witnesses murder, they will call the cops or tell a teacher to call the cops.
      2. While the cops are on their way, you must destroy all evidence of your crimes.
      3. When the cops arrive, you lose all control of Yandere-chan. You see a cut-scene that shows you the outcome of the police visit.
      4. If there is still evidence at school when the police arrive, Yandere-chan is arrested. Game Over.
      5. If there is no evidence remaining when the police arrive, then Yandere-chan is not arrested, but all students have to go home early, so you lose the opportunity to do anything else with the school day.

There will not be policeman NPCs. You will not be able to interact with police. You will not be able to fight or kill police. The police are enough to handle Yandere-chan, they don’t need to call in SWAT or the military.

      • What are your thoughts on a security guard character appearing int he school after a few murders have been discovered. He’d essentially be a glorified teacher with reason to be snooping around a bit more intensely.

      • If it’s a type of NPC who will be re-using the same script as another type of NPC, but with a few variables tweaked, then it’s definitely possible.

However, I haven’t seen any anime featuring security guards, so it might feel out-of-place and like it doesn’t really match the setting.

      • Are you really sure about that? That sounds a tad insulting to Yandere-chan’s capabilities, don’t you think? But then again, this is your game after all. :p

  8. I just noticed yandere chan slowly brings the phone up to her and changes her expression when choosing ”pass time” when insane. :O

  9. YANDEREDEV I just had a cute idea. The dialogue window that asks if you’re sure you want to quit the game? Make it say something yandere instead. Maybe it can show her holding a knife asking if you’re REALLY sure you want to quit?

  10. might sound like a silly idea, but working off the idea of what someone said with the School Guard NPC, and how it might not fit in, maybe you could change that a bit and add in a school detective? Or you could have a detective club or something of the sort, this person could be the leader of the club and after a few murders she could become interested in the case. Maybe she could be somewhat like the opposite of Newspaper-chan, where as she is trying to help you, maybe this character does like Senpai, but has more of an interest in the murders, and is trying to connect the murders, thus being a harder person to get rid of and must be watched more?

Looking back in your updates, you also mentioned possibly having a cute rookie policewomen who falls for Senpai and is also actively searching for the murderer, and will attempt to link evidence to you. it could somewhat fall back onto this idea.

Maybe the detective could come more mid-game to create a harder game for the player so that the game isn’t just slightly repetitive? it would make it so you have to watch out more and be careful what you do with evidence?

Just an idea I had, not sure if it would work/be possible.

    • Yes I like your idea too. I had forgot about the police woman idea of yandevs but that’s roughly the same idea as a security guard except she’d be a kill able character.

I think having a snooping npc by the later part of the game would be a good way to make it more difficult as the game goes on. Personally I think they should be replaceable so if you kill them another will come back and take their place so killing them doesn’t just make the game easier and that’s why a cop or a security guard would be fitting.

      • I don’t like the idea. The game is already an extremely ambitious project with tons of features, and this “Snooping NPC” feature would add unnecessary complications to a project that is already extremely complex. The amount of time and effort required to implement the feature would probably outweigh the worth of the feature.

At this point, I’m not very receptive to the idea of adding completely new types of NPCs that operate totally different from the types of NPCs that I’ve been planning on for months.

      • Sorry yandev I think you misunderstand what i mean by snooping. The npc would act and work like a teacher but have a more complex path so that yandere chan is likely to bump into the snooping npc in more hidden areas. A security guard or an investigator would give the character good reason to be in areas where a teacher wouldn’t be even thought they’re just a pallet swap.

For example a teacher wont go into the bathrooms or on the roof (according to anime) but an investigator/security guard might. Same with tool sheds or around the incinerator or basically an dark corner of the school. I’m starting to like the idea of a detective type character with a schedule that puts him in your way because it reminds me of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni and to a lesser extent Mirai Nikki.

Obviously if you think it’s still too much work or you have a better way to make the game harder on the later kills than don’t worry about it.

  11. I just noticed a minor bug with yandere vision. If you kill or talk to someone with it on it will stay on until you click the button again. I’m using an xbox controller btw.

    • Ooh, I think I know why that would be happening. It’s not game-breaking, so it’s lower priority than the other stuff I’m working on, but I’ll try to fix it if I have the time!

  12. My favorite excuse that Yandere-Chan tells an NPC “I was just filming a prank video for the internet.” I about rolled on the floor laughing when I saw that.

  13. I just found out about this game, but I’m here with some bug reports regarding the Intel cards. I know you said in the update that you turned off some setting that was supposed to fix the problem, but uh…

Eventually part of the timer shows up:

Oddly enough, pressing alt+enter to switch between windowed and fullscreen mode…

…seems to fix the problem. And returning to fullscreen…

    …the game runs just fine.

Unfortunately my laptop is a tool and won’t tell me exactly what graphics card I have, but it’s definitely an Intel.

That’s about all I could get out of it. It’s a Lenovo Yogo Pro 3 if that makes any difference.

    Hope that helps, good luck.

  14. I’ve got a little bug to report, When I killed someone, then dragged the body far away, the “Near body” alert would show up at the spot that the person was killed even though the body wasn’t there anymore. It might be because I was near the start of the blood trail, maybe.
I didn’t the the alert anymore after the body was incinerated though

  15. I have a few things to say:

First, regarding bugs, if you change clothes while wearing the red outfit you will still be wearing the red outfit. Also blood stains aren’t removed when you put on the red outfit.
The more significant bug I found is that if you kill an NPC and get her off-camera before she hits the ground, it seems like she slowly moves away from the spot she was killed. So, depending on how long you wait before you turn around, the body will be farther away from where you killed her.
I also recall someone saying that when you activate yandere vision it changes the red outfit back to the original. I have gotten this to work a few times but sadly I can’t tell what the conditions are.

Now I have one question: If a player already knows the girls that are going to be targets they can eliminate them before their “week”. What will you do about this? Will they be unkillable? Or will you simply allow the player to eliminate them?

    • The white school uniform isn’t supposed to represent the color of the uniform that you will change into when swapping clothing; it’s only meant to represent the concept of switching to a clean uniform.

I haven’t been able to reproduce the bug involving blood and the red outfit. However, the red outfit is an easter egg and won’t be in the final game, so I won’t prioritize any bugs involving it.

Last week, I attempted to fix the bug where ragdolls slowly slide backwards after being killed if they are off-camera. Please tell me if that bug is still occurring in the next build of the game.

Rival girls will not be at school until the week that they become targets. They will be expelled / on vacation / in the hospital / being homeschooled / otherwise unable to attend school, until the week when you need to kill them.

      • Although not having them there is definitely the right way to handle it. It seems funny that senpai is such a chick magnet that it only take a girl a day at school before she falls for him.

  16. I feel the need to inform you that while I was playing this newest test build, whenever I stabbed a girl near her locker, she would usually go through the wall a little and become stuck, glitching and twitching with half her body in the wall (once it was the whole body). It’s probably got something to do with the ragdoll physics, but I thought you should know.

    • Yeah, I’ve seen that myself. It’s not something I’m going to bother fixing for now, it’s low-priority since the ragdolls will use different physics and scripts in the final version of the game.
