March 28th Bug-Fixing Build

The last build had some unpleasant bugs in it, so I’ve decided to roll out another one. Scroll down beneath this somber-yet-beautiful artwork by leylenmonster to see a list of everything that is fixed or different in the new build!

Additions, Changes, and Fixes

  • It is now possible to change the portrait of Yandere-chan that appears in the Stats screen. Navigate to the StreamingAssets folder, open the text file named CustomPortraits.txt, change “0” to “1”, save the file, and then replace CustomPortrait.png (also located in the StreamingAssets folder) with any image you’d like.
  • Fixed the bugs that were preventing custom eyes and custom stockings from working…again. I swear that this time it’s actually working! I’m sorry that it took me multiple tries to fix this problem. 😦
  • Fixed bug that would cause the player to fail any Mission Mode mission if they attempted to leave via the “Go Home” portal rather than the “End Mission” portal.
  • Fixed bug that was causing Yandere-chan to emerge from a changing booth nude instead of wearing her school uniform.
  • Fixed bug that allowed the player to make a panty-hiding shadow appear on a character who was not wearing a skirt.
  • Fixed bug that was causing the panty-hiding shadow to appear on female characters who were wearing club uniforms.
  • Changed one line of text in Budo’s profile. This change is actually related to Osana. Have fun theorizing how!
  • Fixed bug that made some classrooms not have a little wooden platform for teachers to stand on.
  • Fixed bug that was causing houses to appear in the laptop girl’s video feed.
  • Fixed bug that was preventing Nemesis from being able to kill Yandere-chan.
  • Added a backdrop behind the neighborhood in front of the school.
  • Fixed a typo in the credits.

An interview and a new Bug-Fixing Build

I’ve got two things to mention today!

The first bit of news I’d like to share is that I’ve been interviewed by Bijuu Mike, a YouTuber who enjoys Yandere Simulator. The interview ran for over 40 minutes! We covered a wide range of topics, from the origin of Yandere Simulator, to my history before working on Yandere Sim, to my plans for the future once Yandere Simulator is complete – and much more!

You can check out the interview below:

The next thing that I’d like to mention today is that I’ve prepared a new build to fix some of the bugs present in the previous build. You can find a full list of all the changes below:

Fixes, Additions, and Changes

  • Fixed bug that made it possible to interrupt a student’s “waiting to meet Yandere-chan” protocol by asking another student to perform the “Distract” favor on the waiting student.
  • Added a new debug object to the Light Music Clubroom that allows me to test out an upcoming feature. It’s too soon to explain this feature. Hopefully, you’ll find out soon.
  • Removed some art assets from the game that were only meant to be temporary placeholders. (This time, it was the neighborhood outside of the school.)
  • Fixed bug that would allow Yandere-chan to use the “Push” and “Offer Help” commands on Kokona after splashing her with liquid.
  • Fixed bug that was preventing sound effects to come from the two fountains on opposite sides of the school.
  • Fixed bug that made Sakyu Basu’s ring appear on Yandere-chan’s hand during the Befriend/Betray cutscene.
  • Fixed bug that made Senpai’s eyes appear white at the beginning of the Senpai customization sequence.
  • Fixed bug that was disabling the “Custom Stockings” feature described in my previous blog post.
  • Fixed bug that was disabling the “Custom Eyes” feature described in my previous blog post.
  • Implemented new walking animations for Yandere-chan and female students.
  • Adjusted Yandere-kun’s hair so that it’s not so flat against his head.
  • Replaced the railing on the school rooftop with far superior models.
  • Fixed bug that made one of Senpai’s facial hair models invisible.
  • Implemented a new running animation for Yandere-chan.
  • Implemented a new walking animation for males.

March 18th Bug-Fixing Build

If you’re looking for the latest progress update video, click here!

The latest build had a few bugs in it that were really bothering me, so I couldn’t resist uploading a new build to address the issues.

Scroll down beneath this beautiful illustration by padfootlet to see a list of everything that is new in the latest build!

This update contains some changes that were made purely to benefit people who enjoy modding the game. I’ll describe those changes below. This is going to get a bit technical; you might not understand (or care) unless you are familiar with editing the game’s files.

Technical Stuff for Modders

Currently, the game cannot generate portraits for randomly-generated students. The only students that can be randomly generated are the students past Student #33. I instructed the game to not load any student portraits past Student #33, since their portrait would be inaccurate.

However, some modders enjoy putting new characters into the game, using the empty slots that exist past Student #33. Because the game is deliberately scripted to not load portraits for any students past Student #33, this negatively impacts the experience of modding custom students into the game.

I’ve added a file called “CustomPortraits.txt” to the “StreamingAssets” folder. This text file contains a single number: 0. If you change “0” to “1”, then the game will load portraits past Student #33. I hope that this will be helpful for people modding the game.

In addition to that, there is also another change that will be beneficial for anyone who enjoys modding Yandere Simulator to change the characters’ appearances. Previously, student hair color and eye color were linked; there was no way to spawn a student with different-colored eyes and hair. I have added a new column to the JSON file so that it is now possible for modders to spawn students with different hair and eye colors. (It is still not yet possible to choose exact RGB values, though. Sorry about that!)

In a previous update, I said that I had created a file called “CustomStockings.png” that could be edited to give a female character custom stockings. Unfortunately, I forgot to actually add the file to the StreamingAssets folder so that people could access and modify it. Sorry about that! The file has been added to the StreamingAssets folder in this latest build.

Okay! Now that the technical stuff is out of the way, I’ll move on to summarizing the rest of the changes made in this build:

Bug Fixes and Changes

  • Fixed bug that would cause the game’s “prevent the player from peeking at unfinished Osana assets” countermeasures to activate outside of the proper circumstances.
  • Fixed bug that would cause Nemesis to have Saki’s hair and a martial arts bandana on her head at all times. This time, the bug should be fixed for good, and shouldn’t come back.
  • It is now possible to customize a mission in Mission Mode so that Nemesis can be killed while she is wearing a disguise.
  • Fixed bug that would cause the low-atmosphere loading screen to appear during high school atmosphere.
  • Lightened up all characters’ eye textures so that their eyes are a bit brighter and more vibrant.
  • Fixed bug that was causing students’ legs to turn white in Yandere-chan’s basement.
  • Made minor modifications to the Nemesis-chan icons in the Mission Mode menu.
  • Changed the sound effects of the rooftop air ventilation machines.

March Progress Report

Here’s a progress report on some things that have been happening lately, and a few previews of cool stuff that you can expect to see in the near future!

This is one of those videos that doesn’t really need much of a blog post to go along with it, since the video itself is fairly self-explanatory. With that said, I do have one thing to ask you:

Should I implement the maid cafe minigame now, or should I implement it after Osana is finished? Please vote on the poll below:

New build now, new video later

EDIT 4: Video’s done, now I just need to export it and upload it.

EDIT 3: I definitely should have said “2:00 AM” instead of “1:00 AM”…sorry again…

EDIT 2: I’m sorry, the new video will probably be uploaded sometime around 1:00 AM PST on March 17th!

EDIT 1: I’m sorry, the new video probably won’t be ready until sometime in the afternoon or nighttime on March 16th!

I’m working on a new video, but it’s not quite done yet. For now, you can have this new build, with some bug fixes and a few minor changes / additions. Scroll down beneath this beautiful illustration by NZ-Eon to see a list of all of the changes in this build:

She also drew this super-cool illustration of Osana! I love it!

Fixes, Changes, Additions

  • Fixed bug that would occur when Kokona found a note in her locker, rejected it, and attempted to throw it over her shoulder.
  • Added Lycoris Radiata around the mythical cherry tree. This is related to the game’s lore. You’ll understand one day.
  • Fixed bug that would cause another student’s hair to appear on Yandere-chan’s head in the Befriend/Betray cutscene.
  • Fixed bug that would cause Yandere-kun to use female idle/walk/run animations under certain circumstances.
  • Fixed bug that would cause the Senpai Shrine to open if the player paused the game while near the shrine.
  • Fixed bug that was causing some parts of female Martial Arts Clubmember bandanas to appear black.
  • Replaced very old 3D models on the school rooftop that looked extremely out-of-place.
  • Replaced some temporary placeholder art assets with original, final assets.
  • Removed Yandere-kun’s permanent smirk.
  • Changed Yandere-kun’s hair.

Yandere Simulator Live-Action Promo

In 2015, a cosplay group contacted me and offered to create a short promotional video for Yandere Simulator. I wrote a script that was synchronized to a popular Japanese folk song called “Tsubasa Wo Kudasai”, and a talented artist helped me create a storyboard for the video.

The original plan was to film the video in November 2015, but a series of delays occurred. Eventually, the group was finally able to film the video – and here it is! I hope you enjoy it!

A bug-fixing build and a few other things

There was a really annoying bug in the previous build. I wanted to fix this bug and upload a new build immediately, but it would be weird to upload a new build just to fix ONE bug, so I decided to throw in a few other fixes and additions…and now it’s ready!

Aside from the new build, I also have some other stuff to show you, too! Scroll down past this beautiful illustration by yuri0 to check it all out!

Announcing a partnership with tinyBuild!

Now, I know what you’re thinking – “What?! A partnership with a company?!” But, wait! Don’t panic! Please watch the video before jumping to any conclusions:

Please remember the following key points:

If you’re low on time and don’t have time to watch the video, here’s a summary:

This was a very difficult decision to make, because I was very concerned about how the fans would feel about it. However, considering all of the above points, I honestly see no downside to this partnership. I really hope that you’ll be supportive of this decision!

If you were losing faith in Yandere Simulator’s development, or becoming fearful that the game would never be completed, I hope that this will reassure you. tinyBuild has a history of helping struggling game developers finish their games. With their support, Yandere Simulator is guaranteed to be completed!

Here is tinyBuild’s press release about the subject!

As always – thank you for following the development of Yandere Simulator!

New build now, new video soon

I usually upload new builds and videos simultaneously – but today is an exception. My next video will contain a really big announcement, so I’ve scheduled it for 8:00 AM PST, a time when more people will be awake. (That’s about 6 hours away from when this blog post goes up.)

I’ve uploaded a new build of the game. To read about everything is new and different in the latest build, scroll down beneath this beautiful drawing by flannel_kun!

Changes and Additions

  • Changed the shade of pink that covers the screen when Yandere-chan is near Senpai. Previously, it was 100% magenta. Now, it’s a lighter shade of pink that matches the game’s branding.
  • Fixed bug in Pose Mode that would cause graphical errors with the teachers’ textures if trying to change a teacher’s hairstyle.
  • If you go into the Settings menu and press the spacebar on your keyboard, you can toggle experimental graphics settings.
  • Kokona won’t try to begin her cooking event if Yandere-chan is already cooking in the kitchen at the time of the event.
  • Fixed bug that was causing the incinerator’s sound effect to be heard even when nowhere near the incinerator.
  • It is now possible to customize a female student’s stockings in Pose Mode.
  • Fixed bug that was preventing Cyborg Mode from working properly.
  • Added two new hair models for Yandere-chan.
  • Added one new accessory for Yandere-chan.
  • Adjusted Saki Miyu’s hair model.

Osana Progress?

Extremely significant progress has been made on Osana – unrelated to code – but I have not had much time to actually sit down and write code lately. You’ll know what has been eating up my time once you see my next video, when it goes live about 6 hours from now. Because of the exciting events that I’m going to describe in my next video, I am now more hyped than ever to work on Osana!

I think that March 1st ~ March 15th is finally going to be the time period when I will proudly be able to say that I’ve finally made significant code-related progress on Osana for the first time since January. I am really pumped up about this! Once again, I apologize that it is taking so long for me to get Osana ready for you. Game development is full of unexpected twists and turns.

Overwork?

After my second “What’s Taking So Long?” video, I received hundreds of supportive messages encouraging me to take better care of myself. I’ve decided to take the advice that I’ve been given. It’s very important to me to continue making steady progress on Yandere Simulator, so I’m still going to work on it 7 days a week, but I’m going to cut down the number of hours that I work. I’m reducing my work hours to about 10 hours per day. I’ll still only take off one day per month.

To relax and unwind after a day of work, I’ve been streaming video games to twitch.tv; if you’re interested, you can come watch me. I usually start streaming every night at 12 midnight in the PST timezone. By the way, I absolutely need to take off an entire day to stream The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild when it comes out, and you’re welcome to come watch me! (If I don’t get it on release day, I will definitely stream it the day afterwards.)

Thank you for your patience, and thank you for following the development of Yandere Simulator!

“Even Yanderes Need To Love” – A Parody Video

If you’re a Vocaloid fan, you may be familiar with “Kunoichi Demo Koi ga Shitai” – a song that was released in 2013. The title translates to “I Want to Love Even if I’m a Female Ninja”, or “Even a Kunoichi Needs Love”. A fantastic English cover was created by rachie and JubyPhonic.

Earlier this month, a fan of Yandere Simulator created artwork for a Yandere Sim-themed parody of the original music video. She showed her work to me, and I thought it was fantastic! With her cooperation and with the help of a video editor, we produced a higher-quality version of her original video. I got permission from rachie and JubyPhonic to upload the video to my channel – and here it is!

I hope you enjoy it!

That’s cool, but what about the game’s development?

I may have some very exciting news to announce soon, but I don’t want to say anything until it’s 100% set in stone. I’m sorry for keeping you waiting! Thank you for your patience!
