January Progress Report

Happy New Year!

You’re probably curious to know what I’ve been up to since we last spoke, what you can expect in the near future, and when the next update will be dropping. I’m here to answer all of those questions!

To get started, scroll down past this cute and heartwarming picture of young Taro, Osana, and Hanako, drawn by Lady Fan!

Whatcha been doin’?

In December, I uploaded a 7 videos in a row! It took me a long time – about a month – to prepare all of those videos. During that period of time, a lot of people reported bugs and suggested some really clever ways to improve the game – but I chose to postpone all bug-fixes and improvements, because I wanted to focus exclusively on completing the videos. As a result, a lot of bug reports and great suggestions piled up into a really big list. Over the past few weeks, I’ve been going through that list, fixing all of the bugs that were reported, and making numerous Quality-Of-Life improvements to the game. I’m almost finished with that list; only a small handful of things remain, and I only need a few more days to finish going through it.

Latest progress?

In my December 20th video, I mentioned that almost no players bother to dispose of corpses, which should be a priority in a game about getting away with murder. As a solution, I proposed the idea of giving the player numerous harsh penalties for failing to dispose of corpses. However, people in the comment section suggested a much better idea: Determine why people don’t enjoy disposing of corpses, and then make it more fun and interesting to dispose of corpses.

Honestly, that should have occurred to me immediately! So, in-between bug fixes and general improvements, I’ve been implementing some new features that should make it way more fun and convenient to clean up after committing murder. I’ll give you a preview of a few of them:

This isn’t everything that will be appearing in the next update, but it should help you get the idea of what types of things I’m currently working on!

Is that all?

Nope, there’s more! So far, the next build contains 43 differences from the previous build. Some of the ones that I think will be of interest to you are…

  • A few adjustments have been made to elimination methods to make them go by faster (this will be of particular interest to speedrunners)
  • The Senpai+Amai cutscene will have actual animations instead of static poses
  • There is an additional bounty beside Ryuto’s bounty
  • The student council girls will have voices
  • There will be one new easter egg

Also, I’ve done a bit of work outside of the game, as well: I’ve also updated the Characters page with some text for characters that previously had no text.

On another note, completely unrelated to Yandere Simulator…

12 Years of Streaming

On January 17th, 2009, I streamed a video game for the first time. It completely changed my life; once I experienced the thrill of playing video games while interacting with a big audience, I didn’t want to do anything else! For a period of several years, I streamed every day, usually for 12 hours straight!

Every year, during the month of January, I take two days off from work to celebrate the anniversary of the first time I ever streamed a video game by replaying the first two games I ever streamed. On January 17th, I play Resident Evil 4, and on January 19th, I play Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon.

If you’d like to join me, you can find me at twitch.tv/yanderedev, starting at 12:00 noon in the PST timezone. Even if you only pop in for a few minutes just to say hello, I would be very happy to see you there!

    • I’m sorry, I don’t know the release date of the next build yet. I want to make a prediction, but I’d feel really bad if my prediction was wrong, so I’d rather not say anything yet.

      • (1) Wait, how did Senpai die in Mission Mode?! I don’t remember that. (2) I think Kokona’s events even though redundant should remain in the game. Why? For one thing you will make the game more lively and another thing A new player am I think they are onto something when they’re really not. Sort of a weird low-key obstacle kind of a deal. (3) When the game is fully finished and completed I want info Chan to have an individual line for each method of elimination, how about you? (4) i’m kind of iffy are not being notified about info points when you take a panty shot only because I would like to know how much I have at that moment. Even though we can do simple maths sometimes we forget just what we had.

      • 1. It would be revealed if the Nemesis manga ever gets another chapter.

        2. I know, but they were creating bugs.

        3. I’d like that, if budget permits.

        4. I’ll consider it.

  1. Wow incredible ! You made a really good job since you released the demo ! Really, I admire you for all this things you added in a few times 😮

  2. I’m very glad that your takeaway about corpse disposal expanded to ‘let’s make this more fun instead of just punishing them for not doing it’ because while I DO think that finding someone’s corpse on school grounds should freak everyone out way more than it was originally, giving players a carrot is also always a good idea rather than just threatening a stick.

That being said, if this doesn’t produce the results you’re hoping, I’d like to share the thoughts I did earlier with my girlfriend: Right now, this is the demo. Only Osana’s week is functional. Amai has maybe a femur done of the skeletal framework needed for her week.

The consequences for failure of corpse disposal are only two. The affect on the general population (school atmosphere) and the affect on individual characters (traumatizing Taro, which will actively affect the ending, but also traumatizing Raibaru, which forces the player to endure the consequences of their actions in a more subtle way by watching her curl up where she used to hang out with her bestie and cry).

So that means you can affect everyone in a broad sense by freaking them out and stabbing yourself in the foot when it comes to doing illegal or socially unacceptable stuff, and you can affect individuals by traumatizing them and forcing them to experience grief.

But since only Osana’s week is functional in the demo, his essentially means that any consequences from decisions made in Osana’s week have no bearing right now. It doesn’t matter if school atmosphere lowers unless maybe I wanna do the Amai Challenge, because the one and only objection I can complete right now is getting rid of Osana. I don’t have to do anything else and I also really CAN’T, so students becoming paranoid has no affect. Seeing Raibaru broken is a wonderful gut-punch, but you’re not gonna be sitting with that for ten weeks because the game is currently only one week. Breaking Taro a little is another consequence that only lasts until the end of the week (and incidentally I’d argue he should maybe bear more signs of grief if she’s found dead early in the week besides staying home from school for one day; he looks properly broken up in the Amai cutscene but maybe he should be similar to Raibaru and change his routine. Sit quietly and mourn somewhere while he struggles to get his shit together or at least pretend he’s totally fine).

I fully intend to dispose of corpses once more than Osana’s week is available. But right now, once the bug with the achievements has been patched, I’m doing an achievement hunt. If it’s faster to just leave her body lying around in order to unlock what I’m after, then I’m gonna do that, and I suspect others will take a similar approach. Once disposing of corpses has consequences beyond the first week and a single little challenge, I bet people will actually start disposing of corpses unless they deliberately wanna see what the experience will be like if they don’t.

That being said: Whatever happened to the missing posters that would show up in school when a student went missing? I realize you may want to use something that isn’t just their ID picture so it doesn’t look so stiff and lifeless, but I’d consider adding that back in there if anyone is willing to do 2D art of photographs that one would naturally include on a missing poster. It was kind of odd to make Osana disappear the times I did in fact dispose of her corpse and have Taro remark about how she’s nowhere to be found and then not see any reminder of what you did to her at school. If a student goes missing their school feels like the first place their parent would put a missing poster up at.

    • I nearly forgot about the missing posters! It was a really neat thing in Life is Strange, having Rachel Amber’s posters everywhere as a reminder that something darker is happening. Having missing posters in the school would be really neat! Especially if they had a close relationship with someone, leading to more posters (Taro/Raiburu and Osana, Inkyu and Sakyu, Saki and Kokona, Pippi and Ryuto, etc etc). Just a small thing to show how big an impact you had on that remaining student (Say, Inkyu sees you killing someone after Sakyu went missing, they put the pieces together and try to stop you like she does if you attacked Sakyu in front of her.)

  3. This is amazing!!! I want to ask a few things anyway.

1- When you released Osana, you said that you will focus on create videos again, for example: A video about the history of YandereSim, the video about the character models and other videos just for fun. When will you work on them ?
2- I’m still curious about the third game that inspired YandereSim. Are you still planning to upload it ?
3- Do you think that the crowfunding campaing will go well ? What is your thought about the game’s future ?

    • 1) Osana has been realised already for months. She was released at the end of August 2020.

      2) Dev actually streamed playing that game a few months ago, which he did to gain footage needed to make a video on the game. When that video will come out, probably when Dev has the time for it, since he’s really busy right now with the preparations for the crowdfunding campaign, bug fixes and quality of life updates for YanSim.

      3) Dev’s already uploaded youtube videos a few weeks ago explaining his future plans for the game and his thoughts on the crowdfunding campaign. Dev goes into a lot of detail in those videos, so I highly recommend watching them.

    • 1. I’m not sure yet. Every day, I think about how fun it would be to make those videos, but I feel like I should focus on development right now.

      2. I think about that every day, too!! I hope I have time to make that video sometime soon.

      3. I have many mixed thoughts. I may discuss them in a video sometime.

  4. You always inspire me with the work you have done. You push me to work on my own games. Thank you 🙂 Keep up your good work!

  5. My biggest issue is how unrewarding it is to complete the demo in multiple ways.
One changing voice line from senpai and the exact same reply from Amai no matter if Osana was stabbed six times, set on fire, and dropped in front of senpais shoes…. or just didn’t confess to him because we asked her to.

“I can’t imagine what that must be like” becomes
“UH HUH, NO KIDDING AMAI! SHOVE THAT CUPCAKE UP WHERE YOUR HEAD IS”
or “Calm down Amai, she’s just not that into him.”

We NEED more variation based on the method. It’s just no fun otherwise.

  6. I find it lovely that now you are well-respected (with the obvious exception), and can now enjoy streaming the proper, legit, and fun way. You have come a long way. May you have a great month.

  7. Great progress, YanDev! You said you need a few more days to finish the updates..so will the Build be out by the 20th?

  8. so excited for the animation cut scenes! I’m also excited for the student council voices, but one question. Will the student council be voiced for all dialogs? Or just reacting to murder?

  9. I know this bug has probably already been reported, but I’m just hoping the ‘Demo Checklist’ not showing the elimination methods bug gets fixed… Unless I’m doing something wrong? If I am, please let me know 🙂
I’ve pushed Osana off the roof probably more than ten times, electrocuted her and did the betray route both about five times, and equipped every weapon in the game so many times but still can’t get those achievements 😦 Maybe I have to redownload or something idk

  10. Congratulations! That’s a long time to be streaming videos. I’m so happy to see you post some up coming updates. I always get excited when you post news about Yandere Simulator. Good luck! XD

  11. I cannot wait for the next build! keep up the work yandere dev!

Also totally unrelated but who remembers the phrase:
Its like running on a treadmill and you’re like “oh boy i sure really wanna get off this treadmill” then you look behind you and you see 1.4 million people who would be really disappointed angry with you if you stepped off the treadmill, and you’re like “I GUESS I GOTTA KEEP RUNNING” yes sorry for going off topic i just thought that was a funny sentence

  12. i kow tasks arent a main focus at the moment as they are as important as some other things, but osanas suitor still has the same task even when osana is dead

  13. I have an idea to make people dispose of corpses: when the player isn’t using gloves and drag or carry a body, the player fingerprints should be found on the bodies, in that way people would have no choice but to get rid of bodies.

  14. Yandev, On the characters part of the yansim website, Kiyoshi’s last name is Taiso but in the game it says Kiyoshi Tachibana

  15. Questions
Will students be more unique with their routines because I hear all the time students are like robots even thought I know they have those routines for a reason. they all don’t have to have mega events like students going to the bathroom at random times or students having small conversations with each other (not like full dialogue more like “hi how are you doing”)

Not a serious question but I notice Shoku Tsubaraya (cooking club leader) and Geiju Tsuka (art club leader) have the same last name are they related to each other (for Geiju Tsuka it says his real name is Geiju Tsubaraya and they both have green eyes) I was just wondering.

    Also not a serious question
Do students not go to screams anymore because when I killed someone by the photography club they heard it but didn’t come check it out I tried this out with other people and they did the same thing.

  16. Probably should keep the consequences of not disposing corpse though regardless. Actions having consequences really ups the fun factor as well as the challenge factor. Still am I curious as to why not removing/disposing the victim’s corpse was such a let-down when it does make logical sense. But of course not everyone follows the same line of thought, so that video will be quite educational.

  17. Here is an idea for the Befriend/Betray quest for Amai
On Thursday, there could be a event at the end of the day, witch would unlock and early Befriend/Betray quest.
So, The Befrient/Betray quest will first start out with a student from the cooking club (any student) asking Amai why she’s so quiet. Amai would then tell them about that a delinquent (a certain delinquent called Hokuto Furukizu) has been bullying her. To make it worse, Hotuko has a father who has been exporting illegal goods from his house to school. Then after that, week 2 starts, if Osana has been eliminated either way. You are now allowed to put a letter in Amai’s Locker saying to meet her on the school rooftop. Once your there, you can talk to Amai about the problem. Then, after school, you must sneak into Hotuko’s House and steal the illegal goods.

I’ll let you figure out what happens after.

  18. Eeee the game just keeps getting better and better!! I’m excited for everything new that’s coming on this post!
