April 30th Sanity Update

A long time ago, I wrote a list of ways that I wanted to improve the “Sanity” feature. In this build, I decided to finally implement those improvements. It’s a simple build with a small number of changes, but it’s something that I wanted to take care of before focusing on my next task: creating a progress report video.

Sanity-Related Changes

When Yandere-chan’s sanity is very low (less than 33.33%)…

  • …she will begin to have “intrusive thoughts” – no matter how hard she tries to concentrate, she will be unable to stop thinking about killing her rival. From the player’s perspective, these thoughts will be perceived as ghostly visions of Yandere-chan performing gruesome murder animations on Osana.
  • …she will become unable to control her twisted feelings, and will giggle to herself, which will attract the attention of people around her. (The frequency of the giggles depends on the exact level of her sanity. At highest frequency, she will giggle once every 10 seconds.)
  • …she will lose the ability to distinguish people from one another. Because the only person she cares about is her Senpai, everyone else will start to look like a dark blur. Her fellow students will lose all color, and will appear as black silhouettes.
  • …smudges will appear around the edges of the screen. (I promised this feature in 2014, and didn’t implement it until today!)
  • …she will become unable to resist her murderous urges, and will automatically attack anyone who is within range.
  • …the game’s visuals will become more desaturated.

Additionally, Yandere-chan’s current level of sanity will now be represented by a semitransparent number visible over the cardiograph at the bottom-right corner of the screen. You no longer have to try and figure out what level of Sanity she’s at by looking at a squiggly line that turns from pink to red.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed bug that would cause students to fly through the air if they picked up a dropped object after consuming emetic poison. (Yep, you heard that right. It was a real bug.)
  • Crouch-walking or crawling in front of Senpai will no longer result in an instant game over (instead, it’ll just creep him out, like standing too close to him).
  • Fixed bug with Social Butterfly code that would prevent them from achieving their goal of traveling to a location with many students present.
  • Fixed bug that prevented Yandere-chan from entering the correct animation when caught and sent to the guidance counselor.
  • Fixed bug that incorrectly formatted the Discord Rich Presence text.

    • Nah, I don’t think suggesting easter eggs is a good idea. I’m not against them, it’s just that they should be added if Dev feels like it or wants a break. If he starts taking easter eggs suggestions, some people may be put off. Also, I don’t understand half of what they are saying. I would apreciate if someone could translate their message to me. Thanks for your attention.

The effect for the Sakuya Mode easter egg would be throwing knives and stopping time. The soundtrack for it would be Flowering Night.” That’s the part I’m sure of. Then, there’s that part that either means “It’d be a cool feature to add to the game, adding the spell-cards would be nice as well” (spell-cards are a feature in Touhou games if you’re curious) or “Touhou is a really cool game because you can do these things” (namely stopping time, throwing knives and having spell-cards.) Then, “It would be a very cool update if Yandere-dev added it in the next build, it’d be very fun.” And then goodbye.

  4. Apperantly there already seems to be various bugs in the ne build.But besides that the game is really great and I can’t wait to see the finished product!

    • I feel with coding, you change one line of code, or add a new line, and another line a thousand lines away just decides it hates that other line of code and chucks a tantrum.

Wow I really like this new build, although I’ve seen in some videos that in Ayano’s “homicidal thoughts” Osana’s hair have no phisic (they merge into the ground when Ayano performs the lowest sanity animation) and the characters who become black have their accessories and clothes that are still colored (example, Miyuji Shan’s – Light Music Club leader – hair clip, blazer and stockings are still colored while she becomes black).

    • It seems for me or final version will be crazy difficult to clear up…no debug (so no teleporting), no running away, no crouch, no laughing in public, no running around student council, with annoying crime photos on smartphones, black figures and auto-attack everyone in low sanity… and with time limit exterminate one rival a week. May be with random student routes…

  6. So I’ve decided to play a bit of YanSim before sleeping. Apparently, you could kill senpai in this build with 0% sanity. Although I was using the summon ancient evil Easter egg and summoned him in front of Ayano. No corpse but his aura remained. I’ll check and see if the summon ancient evil thing affects the ability to kill senpai, but for now I’ll rest. If anyone else wants to confirm and report the bug then go ahead.

    • No edit function so sorry for the double post. But perhaps the ability to kill senpai with 0% sanity is done on purpose so that players would be more careful and would use the laugh thing as intended? I haven’t checked if it results in a game-over the next day, but if it’s done on purpose then I think it should?

  7. I tried to update my game and it says it’s up to date even though it’s still not the April 30th build? Has anyone else had this issue + how do I solve ;-;

    • Yeah. Happens to me a lot. Not only that, but a few times, it started downloading, then I finally open the game, and it turns out it just re-downloaded the same build!!

      Here’s what seems to work for me: I just go into File Explorer, go to Downloads, and delete the files “Yandere Simulator,” “Yandere Simulator Data” and the launcher. Then empty the recycle bin so there’s nothing of Yandere Sim left, and download the launcher again. It should download the latest build after that for some reason. Don’t ask me why. It just usually seems to work for me. Either that or ya could try downloading without the launcher. I hope this works. 🙂

  8. their are some bugs i got to say!

    when i was insane i was able to go near senpai and kill him. and also another incident is that, I can hid in a corner without the student council seeing me when Aoi came by the room she was me (i was still in the corner hiding) and walked over i crouched in the corner and sat their and she did not see me until i got up and i was sent to the councilor and was able to speak to her when their were bodies on the premise.

  9. Hey YandereDev! I have a question! In one of your video called: January Osana progresse Report part 2, at 2 minutes, YanChan’s behavior is shown when her sanity is really at the bottom. When will that be implemented? I’ve been very eager to see that animation in the game. :DD

I like the new Insanity effects, one thing though that I might suggest, many of the characters are still easy to tell who they are when at 0% Sanity, Maybe since Yandere-Chan can only see Senpai in this state, all of the other students should look like silhouettes of him, instated of being a silhouette of themselves, just a thought.

  12. I think maybe It may be an error. But I’m not sure. When I killed someone and the body moved to another place very far. I want to do about limitation 30FPS because I feel that Thirty frames are quite ok. thank you Yandere Dev That created this great game.

  13. I killed someone in front of Senpai (0% Sanity and with a mask) he wanted to take off The mask but Ayano killed him and i can’t move ;-;

  15. I really like the way you’ve implemented the sanity system. These additions I like it even more now. Always thought the cardiograph thing was a really cool idea, unique and in a way also adds some form of living realism as well. Always felt that stealth elements in games should be based around mindset, intellect, and stamina. Good work as always!
