What’s Going On With Yandere Simulator’s Development?

I try my best to avoid making “defensive” videos. I really, really don’t like the idea of spending 10~15 minutes telling people, “No! You’re wrong!” The act of defending yourself also carries the unfortunate side-effect of inadvertently appearing oversensitive, or insecure, or whiny.

However, it has become extremely tiresome to see the same set of statements popping up in the comment section of every video:

  • “YandereDev doesn’t know how to write code!”
  • “The game has a low framerate because of bad code!”
  • “YandereDev is wasting his time on unnecessary features!”
  • “YandereDev should be focusing on Osana!”
  • “The game’s character models were stolen!”

Seeing these remarks strongly reduces my motivation to work on the game, causing my productivity to sharply decline. It’s impossible to feel enthusiastic about developing the game when this is the sort of feedback I’m getting.

After months of gritting my teeth and trying to ignore it, it has become painfully apparent that this crap will never go away unless I directly debunk it. So, here’s my attempt to do so:

There’s actually a lot more that I want to say in regards to clearing up misconceptions, but none of it has anything to do with the subject of game development, so I decided that it should be a separate video altogether. Ideally, that video will be out soon.

      • I am not a huge fan of the current state of the new character model, but Dev said that the style will continue to change, and I can definitely see potential in this character model. I think it will be good to have new character models in the final game, especially considering how limited the current ones are when it comes to facial expressions.

      • Do you know what “Work In Progress” means? It means that the new model isn’t the final product and even then, it is definitely a lot better than the placeholder models.

      • well, tbh, It’s a 50/50. I like Yan Chan’s hairstyle, but not her face. Also, I like the new default uniform in one of his videos.

    • He’s planned on changing them for years now and by the looks of the model at the end, it looks like lots of time end effort went into making it so it’ll be a shame if it went to waste.

    • The character models aren’t final but he wants the characters to be more unique and look more like anime characters with more unique expressions. He made a video about it a long time ago

    • He could be sued if he keeps the current character model and tries to profit off of his game. I’ve found the character model in the Unity store myself and it’s only allowed to be used for games you are not planning on making money off of. It would be a huge mistake for him to keep it.

    • I love the new character models, they r not finished yet but the preview we saw was really cool and cute, plus they are designed to be more flexible for the animations they need. This way all the different characters will have unique faces instead of all having the same, plus yan dev has been working on these for ages.

    • There has been a lot of rumors and hate circling around the internet regarding the things that Dev talks about in this video (messy code, “pointless” minigames, etc.). The purpose of this video is to clear up misconceptions about the video and to help the community better understand what is going on.

  1. I REALLY love the artistic design of the experimental character model. So unique – one would never mistake it for another game’s.
I feel like I understand the YanSim situation better after your video, so thanks!
Also, “No! That’s wrong!” = Yandev is possibly a danganronpa fan

  2. For me the new character of Yandere I love it! It’s a good idea even if the others are not … Good thing happens with the new characters I mean different things you’ll have to work one by one on the new characters … but I really like the new AyanoAishi! ^ – ^ try it ..!

  3. Ok I have supported you for years and I like the progress, but one thing has bothered me. These silly defensive videos. What do you expect when ur making a game that both is a new concept and takes a long time? People are gonna bitch and moan. Before red dead redemption came out people in Twitter were nuts about saying oh we want gameplay videos the game is gonna suck and it’s taking too long. People are gonna talk! As a game developer you need to ignore hateful comments and just make your game instead of bitching about other people’s ignorant comments. It’s silly man.

    • I understand where you’re coming from but you gotta understand that Yandere Dev is just one guy, he doesn’t have a brand name or company’s backing at the moment. I feel like his defence videos help maintain the community, I mean if he just ignored it people will think he doesn’t care, not listening to feedback and not addressing problems. Hate spreads, even if your not affected by it others are easily molded by popular opinion. I think it’s best that people can hear the problems right from the creators mouth rather than looking for information from other reddit users.

That’s just my take on the whole thing….

    • Well, as far as I known he did bu those model assets… But those models have limited expressions and can’t express emotions like those you see in the anime so he decided to create a new model plus it’s also beneficial as that model is only exclusive to yandere simulator!
Also that model is a work in progress so maybe there’ll be changes to the models

  4. YandereDev, you’re doing an amazing job. I always look forward to seeing the progress made in this game. Take all the time you need and keep up the good work.

  5. “Writing code like 3 guns were pointed at my head” ….. wooow….. that’s…. really sad….. I mean not wanting to be rude but living in fear like that, man…. you were terrified of people losing interest, you were terrified of “disappointing” the people of patreon, you were terrified of “disappointing” your subscribers on YouTube…. man your life is/was based on fear! That’s so depressing!

  6. I LOVE the experimental model! It’s honestly gorgeous, and I really hope something like it gets finalized.

  7. I absolutely LOVE the character models shown at the end of the video! For a long time I have always hated myself when I saw video games using the same character models cause it reminded that the models weren’t originally from Yandere Simulator. But these set the game to a whole new level when they are released. I thought I would have to wait a long time to see it. But now i’m certain that the game will be the best!

    • P.S. I think it would be a better idea to use these models before the crowd funding to give a really good idea of what style the game would be. Me and a lot of others don’t mind if it takes a while to script it.

  8. I am learning how to program in school (it’s my course) and I understood your coding! I’ll be going through your old videos to see if I can find more. When I’m older, I also want to create my own game. Like you, I’ll be alone and it’ll be huge, but I think I can do it. If I learn more and get better at coding, I hope I may one day be of help! If I can help you, with this game, while improving myself, it’s the best I could ask for.
I don’t know if you’ll see this, but I thought I’d at least try! Good work on the game! he character designs for Ayano look great so far!

    • I’m learning computer science in school like you, although it’s not advanced like yours. i won’t go through this whole headache, but i know you can do it! Your game will be the best game of the year in the future!

  9. Pues yo creo que no debes de poner atención a las malas críticas…sólo concéntrate en el juego al fin de cuentas somos más los que estamos entusiasmados con el juego, por lo que usted sólo debe concentrarse en las personas que lo apoyamos!!!
    Saludos

  10. I dont wanna sound rude. I love this game and I became attached to the character models and tbh the new models look ,how do I say it, not good in my eyes. A lot of people think they are pretty but not me. So in my opinion (even thought you probably put SONMUCH WORK AND TIME on this model) it looks like shit. Sry yan-dev ut is just my opinion 😞

  11. Im a not soooooooo happy with the new models of the charakters……they looking….so weird…..its not looking every anime-style at all, and that ruins the games charme with th innocent school students inklusive Yandere-chan.

  12. In the final game, will people still be able to edit Yandere-Chan’s looks and hairstyles to create their own sort of “protagonist”? And will the “Custom Senpai” make it into the final game also?

  13. I was pretty bothered by all of those people that kept talking about the drama over and over again. They gave me anxiety and were ruining the game for me. You kept quiet about it for months. Not saying anything for several months actually makes me think of you as mature. Sorry if those haters kept bothering you and causing you stress, I totally get it. Causing drama and complaining only slows you down, it doesn’t make you work faster. Waiting for updates on ‘Yandere Simulator’ has taught me to be more patient, which is a good thing. Thank you and keep up the good work.

  14. I’M LOVING THAT NEW MODEL
    SHE’S SO CUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUTE
also, for everybody, let’s outright say it. “Disgusted” by the new models. Remember that the style is not finalized

  15. what about the other placeholder assets, though? were they copyrighted? like were you allowed to use them for profit? if you did that’s alright but i’ve seen people say you weren’t and just want to be sure it’s only rumors

      • YandereDev, I miss you so much for months! Keep your game great until is 100% complete and stay away from your “drama”! I´m still being your fan of your game and you!

      • It’s kinda like if you needed a pencil but didn’t have a pencil for whatever reasons, and you stole one from another person, and after you got one of your own you just put it back in that person’s possession without them knowing you stole it in the first place.

Same could be said for those placeholder assets.
It’s morally wrong, but now it’s too late to point any fingers and YanDev doesn’t have any reason to say that he stole them other than probably owning up to it/being honest and apologizing.

      • Saah, I think you’ve fundamentally misunderstood some things, so please let me try to explain;
YanDev has not sold his game at the moment. He offers current builds completely free of charge!

Having a Patreon account and getting donations is different than getting ‘profit for a game’. People willingly support his Patreon, by giving him an amount of money they choose themselves, without any obligation to do so.

Yes, he is getting money from people who like what he does, but he does not get money for the game itself.
I hope I explained it so you can understand, please ask if I wasn’t clear enough.

      • i’m talking about using resources that weren’t free to use for profit… like using a stock photo you didn’t buy, or random art for deviantart, basically anything that wasn’t labeled free for commercial use

      • So, you’re asking if YanDev used stolen artwork in the past and if that is a rumor or true? If that’s the case then I’m not qualified to answer your question.

And also if this was what you were referring to in your first comment, then you didn’t make yourself entirely clear.
Placeholder assets and stolen photos are two entirely separate things after all.

  16. I get it, dude. I could compare it to why a story I write can take years of not just writing and editing. A lot goes into it that most people are unaware of.
You keep doing what you’re doing, YandereDev. I look forward to what you put together next. Good luck with development. I know you can do it.

  17. Yandere Dev, I know I’ve never made a game before, and I bet that some of those who commented that “you don’t know what you’re doing” obviously have never met any trial and errors into making games that requires coding. Just try to ignore them (I know it sounds like it’s easy on paper than it is in real life) and continue with your current schedule.

  18. The main problem of the videos of people who criticise you, is that their criticism is not in place, for example:
    – Digging up ancient posts you wrote when you were a 17-years-old child and pretend like that is still relevant today.
    – Pointing out that the game development is slow, ignoring the fact that you are the only programmer working on the game and that game development isn’t as easy as it seems.
    – Saying that your code is messy, even though they don’t have access to the game’s code. These people base their claims on tiny screenshots, not knowing your actual code structure and making wild assumptions based on what they have seen.
    – Saying that you are rude to your fans, while in 99% of the cases, you are polite and only lose patience when people repeatedly ask questions that you have already answered in your Frequently Asked Questions or repeatedly send you e-mails with content that you have specifically asked them not to be bothered with.
    – Saying that you censor comments, even though you have already pointed out that disabling the comments on your blog and videos was a grave mistake and you regret it.

    And… things like that.

But don’t feel discouraged. There are still a lot of people out there that support you and who understand your struggles rather than looking for things to bash you.

  19. Unless it would take like, over two months, I think that the new models should be implemented as soon as you feel sstisfied with them. It would dramatically change the imsge of the game, because the current models really do look like Unity store trash (not bemoaning the quality, just the mindset) Also, need to work on committing on that new name. ^^;; I’ve been glad to see big updates come out, and it seems like you’re doing much better mentally. I’m waiting until blood detection and save states are implemented before I play again personally, but know that I’m watching silently.

  20. Oh wow. The character models are so cool, I love the art style, you should go with that art style. Also, question about characters. Hanako is in the school for a week, is she there because akademi is giving a tour for younger students about akademi? Or something else?

  21. Most of the people who say these things to you have NO IDEA how hard it is to make a game. (Not that I do either, but I know it takes a lot of time and effort.) Also, I think people need to stop saying “oooh work on ___” in the end, it is your game, and you choose what you want to work on, when you want to work on it, and how you want to do it. If they have a problem with that, then they need to go get a life or do something else until the ACTUAL GAME is out. Honestly, people should be happy they even get to see the game.

  22. 1. Keep working hard YandereDev, we’z believez in youz! (don’t ask about the z at the end of all the words, I do it for random effect)
    2. Oh wow, that’s all I had to say…(sorry for wasting your time by reading this absolutely poinitless comment, you can all tell me to die for doing this now. #IHML)

  23. A very good and understandable video. And I loved how it was kind of a callback to the old videos in the beginning of the channel.

I deliberately haven’t watched any of those ‘the REAL Yandere Dev’ videos that somehow got recommended to me, but even I had some questions and doubts about where everything is going (especially with my limited amount of game development knowledge)
But now I feel a little smarter and feel like I better understand where you’re coming from!

Keep up the good work YanDev!

  24. YandereDev! YandereDev! Even if you don’t notice me or my post, I know you’ve worked so hard putting all your effort into this game. Everytime I hear there is an update I get excited because i can’t wait for the next thing that will make the game awesome!! Your video today made a lot of sense and I hope things go well for you in the future. Can’t wait for the next update!!

  25. This video pretty much confirms lots I’ve been trying to say in YandereDevs defence, but lately I’ve just come to realize it’s futile… They follow the development even if they don’t like the game and same people just say broken record negative responses to each update. You will not turn their heads, they have made up their mind and no matter how you explain things, they will ignore it and continue the negativity… Honestly YandereDev, you’ve probably heard this a million times already, but all you can really do is try and ignore all of and just focus on the task. You’ll prove them wrong once the game is done, even if it takes few years. Those who like the game won’t be easily affected by them and will continue to enjoy the game and support you YandereDev, I’m sure of it. Thank you for developing YandereSim for us fans 🙂

    • This is called “sheepole” people that follow the stupid side and think everything those idiots say is true. I’ve never ONCE had any issues email/Stream with Yan-dev. He’s a good dude that’s freaking stressed out due to everything going at him at once.

    • Yes, he bought the model legally and is allowed to sell games with it in it.
The new experimental model was specifically made for him, I assume, so he is again legally allowed to sell games with it in it too.

    • ‘finish the damn game’ …finishing a game takes YEARS
If the already established fanbase destroys itself and everything that’s been worked on before the game is even finished, then whats the point?

It’s vital to clear misconceptions as fast as possible and to the best of your abilities. Open communication is the only thing that can accomplish that.

  26. I’m following your advice and just ignoring the unacknowledged that don’t understand coding and ignore the fact that you have emails/hate comments/hate comments on here and everywhere else that break you down and upset you. People have to understand that shit gets to a person after awhile, you don’t just go “Oh this doesn’t matter to be anymore” and ignore them. But I say…if you can ignore the ones that were “Fans” and then became sheep to other idiotic people that don’t understand coding/physiology or plan hard work in general.

  27. Hmm……… I would say going forward for the experiemntal character model that the simpler “line” nose works best along with the “line” mouth. Eyes are gorgeous AF though so I say keep ’em

Other then that, the V-slice explanation only hit me now after you explained it ( It’s perfect in fact ) and since I kinda feel we’re almost to the crowdfubding finishline, I’m starting to get giddy with anticipation. Ooooh boy.

But the old (and honestly pathetic at this point) complaints against you aside we love you Yandere Dev. Love you for making this game, love you for all the work you’ve put inot it, love you for brigning little unity asset store chan to life, and love you for bringing all of us together into this little community of yours.

We love you and we thank you for letting us all follow you on the journey that is Yandere Simulator

  28. How many more times are people going to ask these questions? It’s getting ridiculous how much time you have to spend explaining and reexplaining things because people won’t listen.

  29. it seems to me that the current model is not very..Yes, all used to them but the model that you showed in the video I really liked and I hope that you add it to the game of course after the release of Osana(sorry if there are mistakes I’m from Russia and badly know English)

  30. I really love Yandere Simulator😍, but I really understand the situation that you’ve been. My only concern is the character model, because I’m not sure what would be yandere chan gonna look like that the player have been used to. I really hope in the future that the character model should blown me away and I always wait until your game is finished.😊😊😊

  31. Yandev the only thing you can do to shut up their mouth is to finish the game as you want. If they don’t appreciate your work, why do they still follow it? If they criticize is because they don’t know how hard is making a game in your conditions. The hate will never end but it doesn’t count because just them are wasting their time only to look your worst. I hope to see an incredible update next time! I love your videos, too!

  32. Hey YanDev, could you please make it possible to add captions to this new video? I have seen many comments from fans that do not speak English as their primary language, and I want them all to be able to hear your message.

  33. The new character models proportions look great! As for the face, why don’t you just ask the modelers to follow the Official Yandere Simulator website art style? I think this art style is simply the best, as it doesn’t change a lot for the current one (so people will still like it and will recognize characters as YS’ when they see them).

So, they’ll look like young adults with the faces of the official art style that everyone knows and loves. Also you wouldn’t have to ask the artist to change basically all of the artwork that has already been done.

As for me, I don’t really like the face of the new model (I know you said it was not final), and there’s quite a few people that don’t like it a lot as well. Proportions looking great though 👌
