Anime Expo Announcements (and a new build!)

EDIT #1: On July 3rd, I uploaded a new bug-fixing build.
EDIT #2: On July 4th, I snuck in one final bug-fixing build before leaving for Anime Expo! Scroll down to the very bottom of the blog post to read about it!

I’ll be attending Anime Expo 2018! Just like last year, I’m planning to be there for all 4 days of the convention.

In 2016 and 2017, there were Yandere Sim fan meetups at Anime Expo! These meetups are my happiest memories of the time I’ve spent working on Yandere Sim, so I’d like to meet up with fans again this year!

Just like last year, the plan is:

  • July 5th – 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Site 4
  • July 8th – 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Site 4

I think I waited way too long to announce this. Most Yandere Sim fans probably won’t check my blog between now and the expo, so a lot of people aren’t going to see this announcement. As a result, it might be a small gathering this year, but if even if only one person shows up, I’ll still be absolutely delighted!

There are three other things I want to discuss in this blog post: What I’ll be wearing at the expo, some good news regarding the game’s code and framerate, and also a new bug-fixing build that is being released today! Click “Continue Reading” to read more!

To make it easy for you to spot me at Anime Expo, I’m planning to wear Yandere Sim shirts, like these:

You also might see me wearing this shirt, too:

Where did this amazing artwork come from, you ask? It’s artwork that was created for a poster that is being sold at the booth!

Check it out, it’s holographic and shiny:

You can get this poster at Booth #4131. If you remember things better when a cheeky anime girl mascot is involved, this graphic should help:

If you can’t attend Anime Expo this year, you can still buy that poster at the website.

Programmer Assistance

If you’ve been checking this blog for a long time, you might remember a post I made almost exactly 1 year ago, about converting the game from JS to C# and upgrading from Unity 4 to Unity 5, and all of the improvements that came with it. This kind of upgrade could not have been made while I was working on the game; it could only happen during a point in time when I was not making any changes/additions to the project. For this reason, the C# conversion and Unity 5 upgrade took place while I was at Anime Expo, since it was a period of 4~5 days when I wasn’t able to actually touch the game.

This year, something similar is going to happen. For a few months now, I’ve been working together with a programmer who has been identifying and fixing problems with Yandere Simulator’s code. One of the primary causes of the game’s low framerate is a physics bug that exists in Unity 5, but was fixed in Unity 2017. While I’m at Anime Expo, this programmer is going to upgrade Yandere Sim from Unity 5 to Unity 2017! But that’s not all:

Last year, I explained that I had to wait 60 seconds for the code to compile every time I wanted to make a change to the game, because I was making the game in JavaScript. This was fixed by converting to C#. Presently, I’m facing a similar problem; whenever I compile the game’s code, the game’s pathfinding plugin breaks, which causes students to walk in place. This means that if I want to test anything that involves students, I have to reload the school scene, which takes 60 seconds. That pathfinding bug is forcing me to wait 60 seconds every time I want to make a minor change to the game – just like JavaScript did last year! However, the programmer I mentioned above has found the cause of this bug, and is going to implement the solution while he’s upgrading the game to Unity 2017!

In short, when I get back from Anime Expo, the game will be running on a better engine, the framerate will be improved, AND I won’t have to wait 60 seconds to test changes anymore! The programmer will also be taking care of some other stuff, as well, but I don’t want to overload this blog post with a bunch of technical jargon. The short version is that I’m finally getting a lot of the assistance that I’ve desperately needed!

By the way, I’m also releasing a new bug-fixing build today. You can read about the fixes/changes below:

July 2nd Fixes, Changes, and Additions

  • The player can now activate a club leader’s club-related dialogue options by speaking to them whenever they are within 10 meters of their club routine area, instead of having to speak to them when they are standing still inside of their club.
  • Fixed bug that would cause a bucket to fill up with gasoline if the player attempted to fill the bucket with water, after the bucket had previously been filled with gasoline earlier in the day.
  • Fixed bug that would cause student council members to use the “holding grudge for murder” reaction to Yandere-chan if speaking to her after breaking up a fight with a delinquent.
  • Fixed bug that caused a bunch of club accessories to appear on Yandere-chan’s head during the cutscene in her living room. (It looked pretty goofy.)
  • The club characters will now stop holding props in their hands when the player has aimed a camera at their faces.
  • If a delinquent sees Yandere-chan holding a bully’s corpse, they will now react with the “Evil Persona” reaction.
  • Fixed bug that would cause Akane to permanently walk into a closed door if the Art Club was shut down.
  • Removed the nameplates that were mistakenly placed inside of the gym’s storage rooms.
  • Fixed bug that would cause Nemesis to hold a science club prop and a watering can.
  • Restored missing geometry on the exterior of the school gym.
  • Adjusted a few characters’ personas.

July 3rd Fixes and Changes

  • To make sure that his profile description (“a man of few words”) matches his behavior, Geiju now speaks exclusively in extremely short, apathetic, one-word or two-word sentences when interacting with Yandere-chan.
  • Fixed bug that would cause one of the Gardening Club students to water “the air” instead of watering flowers, when on the school rooftop.
  • Fixed bug that would cause the combat minigame’s sound effects to continue playing even after a council member had stopped the fight.
  • Fixed bug that prevented the 15 new students from having outlines around their hair when viewed in Yandere Vision.
  • Fixed bug that would make the camera behave strangely when Yandere-chan was holding or dropping a folded apron.
  • Adjusted the Student Information box so that text can’t be right up against the borders of the box.
  • Fixed bug that caused Yandere-chan to freeze in place after taking off a bloody labcoat.
  • Updated Geiju’s portrait to accurately reflect the color of his glasses.
  • Removed some expensive debug calls that were lowering the framerate.
  • Fixed typos in student profiles.

July 4th Fixes

  • Fixed bug that made it impossible to change Yandere-chan’s hair after switching to the Minecraft-inspired hair style.
  • Fixed bug that prevented outlines from appearing on some student’s profile pictures.
  • Students should no longer be able to get stuck on open doors on the school’s rooftop.
  • Fixed bug that was preventing Geiju from being able to say his “club leader” lines.
  • Geiju will now say a shorter sentence when reacting to Yandere-chan’s misbehavior.

  1. YandereDev,you said you will go down the rest of the checklist of the “Where’s Osana?” video, and now I’m a little confused because in other videos you show LONGER lists and in others you show SHORTER lists, for example, in a video you said that NPCs will perform school-related activities (gym, pool, locker rooms, etc.) and that all club buffs, all panty buffs and all school subject buffs will be functional, and in an older vid you said that there will be visuals for the end-of-day results. Idk I just wanna know if all of those ideas got rejected or if you are actually going to work on those things in the near future.Btw, you’re doing such an awesome work. Keep up the great work! (Sorry if you don’t understand me, i suck in English I’m because i’m from Spain)

    • Sorry, sometimes I forget to include things on the list, or remember other things that I forgot to mention in previous lists. You will probably continue to see the list updating in the future.

  2. Hi, Yandere dav! I have some questions:
    1) What will happen if you kill an opponent before Friday? The game immediately goes to the next week?
    2) Do not you have to do the deputies Amai, Kizana, Oka and Asu, for the first weeks?
    3) How will Senpai react if on Wednesday to photograph Osana’s phone, the corpse?

Forgive me for mistakes, I’m from Russia ^-^

    • 1) The player gets to choose if they want to skip to the next week, or continue to play out every day of the week.

      2) You’ll see.

      3) I have thought about it, but I have not yet made a decision.

  3. Be careful YandereDev! I keep hearing rumors on this comment page that haters are planning something! But other than that, I hope you have a great time!

  4. YANDEREDEV YANDEREDEV! I just realized something. You have to check the amount of students you want to add because I think it’ll equal over 90.

  5. I think, i must doing now a Lets Play of this Game. I do it last year on the same time and stoppet to make new episodes.
Now so much changes from my last episode and those new additions and bug fixings are really cool.

  6. OMG!!!
In every update impressed term. When you put the gardening club,I said:this game is going to the most spectacular.
I understand why you didn´t put Osana yet.
I hope you have a very good population.
    Thanks for your attention.
    (if you don´t understand something,because I´m Spanish

  7. YANDEREDEV YANDEREDEV! I may be wrong about this, but didn’t you say that you would be making a video about the delinquents and the bullies a while ago? What happened to that?

  8. YANDEREDEV YANDEREDEV! Are you going to add more students or club members in the gaming club? Or are there just going to be only two club members?

  9. YandereDev,you said you will go down the rest of the checklist of the “Where’s Osana?” vídeo, and now I’m a little confused because in other videos you show longer lists and in others you show shorter lists, for example,in a video of late 2017 there was this point that said that NPCs would perform school-related activities (gym, pool, locker rooms, etc.) and that all club, panty and school sublejcts buffs will be functional, and in an older vid (sometime in 2016) you said that there will be visuals for the end-of-day results.Idk I just wanna know if all of those ideas got rejected or if you’re actually going to work on those things and I’m taking away development time with this stupid message.Btw,I just wanna say that you are doing awesome work and that lately progress is much faster (I think it’s because you changed your update schedule) oh and I wanted to say that you’re my favourite developer.if you don’t understand me I’m really sorry. it’s probably because o suck in English(I’m from Spain)

  10. Hey, Yandere Dev! I do not know if this is a bug or not but I found that during cleaning time when Uekiya is cleaning by her club, you can pickpocket her keys when she has started cleaning. 🙂

    • It is not really a bug, but it is impossible to win the minigame if you try to pickpocket her at that point in time, so maybe I should prevent the pickpocket prompt from appearing there…

  11. Yandere dev! I have a question, will all the clubs that are not implemented have purposes in school/be a threat to yandere chan? Like maybe the sports club running around and stretching around the track to prevent Yan-chan from roaming around with a corpse?

    • I want there to be 100 characters in total. I think that the game should begin with a minimum of 90 students present at school. 10 of them will be rivals (and will be absent until their week begins).

  12. YANDEREDEV YANDEREDEV! I have a few questions, if you don’t mind.
    1) I’ve seen you list the 15 personas in two sepeate videos. In the Photography Club video, and the Where’s Osana video. In both of them, there are the 14 in the game right now (Coward, Dangerous, Fragile, Heroic, Loner, Lovestruck, Phone Addict, Sleuth, Stalker, Strict, Teacher’s Pet, and Violent), but in the Photography Club video, the 15th is called “Indestructible”, while in the Where’s Osana video, the 15th is called “Protective”. None of the characters have either of these personas. What are, who has them, why are they listed as implemented, and why are they different if you say you have 15?

    2) How goes the conversion from Unity 5 to Unity 2017? Is it almost done?

    3) Do you plan on converting C# into another computer language?

    4) I thought that converting Java Script and Unity 4 to C# and Unity 5 sped up time greatly. Why did they slow down again?

    5) Do you really plan on having a small town? It’s a little obvious with the last scene from the Where’s Osana video.

    6) Do you know if Mulberry plans on updating the chibi Yandere Simulator picture again? I LOVE that picture and I know a lot of people do too.

Thanks for making such an awesome game! I’m so excited to see it grow. Keep up the good work! YOU ROCK!

    • 1) I made a typo there – I’m sorry. “Indestructible” is not an official name. You’ll see “Protective” implemented sometime later this year.

      2) It was successful! I haven’t had a chance to look at it yet, but I’ll look forward to investigating it once I get back from AX.

      3) No, I want to stay with C#.

      4) Compiling code is still fast. The broken-pathfinding bug has always existed, and loading the school scene has always been slow. In the “release build” of the game (what you play) the loading times are actually pretty quick. But in the “debug build” of the game (what I use when I work on the game) loading times are about 4x longer. The idea here isn’t to improve compile times or load times; the idea is to remove the bug that forces me to constantly be loading the scene.

      5) I’m currently not planning on having a small town.

      6) Since she never updated the previous / original chibi image from 2017, I think it’s unlikely that she’ll update the 2018 image. I think you’ll only see new chibis in 2019.

Thanks for your kind words, though!

  13. I’m not sure if you’ve already addressed it, but when Ayano is on the walkway above the stage all the doors open and the curtain piece disappears but everything returns to normal when she walks off the platform. I saw this on July first, when the build was released.

  14. Ok last one, for real, Yandere dev,
    1. Will the dance machine work in the future? Like will there be a mini-game where we press up,down, left, right, to make Yandere-chan dance Just for fun?
2.Will all the npc including Yandere-chan have their own original design instead of using unity store bought asset character models

    • 1) I think that would be fantastic, but it’s hard to justify asking someone for the animations and programming it when there are more important features that I need to work on. 😦

      2) When you say “original design” do you mean “original character model”? 99% of the characters were designed by me, but the character models were not created exclusively for Yandere Simulator. One day, I want to replace the character models (while keeping the same general designs). However, whether or not the character models will actually get replaced is dependent on a bunch of factors that I’m not in control of, so I can’t promise it just yet.

    1) You said that the framerate will be better when it is converted to Unity 2017. How MUCH better do you think that will be?

    2) How much faster do you think that you will be able to work on the game with the new engine?

    3) What do you mean by getting “assets”? What are assets, to be exact?

    • 1) It won’t be a HUGE difference, but to fix the framerate, a bunch of little changes need to be made. All of these little changes will add up to make a huge difference.

      2) The new engine won’t make it faster, but fixing the pathfinding bug will make the process itself way faster.

      3) An “asset” is a 3D model, 2D artwork, a sound effect, an animation…absolutely anything that you will see or hear within the game.

  16. Yandere Dev! I have 2 questions to ask. Are you going to release a build with Osana before 2019 AND is lowering someone’s reputation to less than 100 the easiest elimination method? You can easily get a high reputation by joining the cooking club, complimenting students, and using panty & seduction buffs. Yes, you’ll lose reputation points by gossiping, but you can restore it back by doing all of these on the next day

  17. Yandere Dev, will you make a video on the Science Club’s backstory? You released them and apparently never mentioned there’d be a story video or something, so I’m curious. It’s already my fave club and I find the backstory videos awesome.
PS; please be safe in AX. There are rumors and rumors, and even though nothing’s confirmed, please be careful.

    • It might be kinda fun, but I feel like I should focus on game development, instead.

By the way, if there is anything urgent you think I should know, then please e-mail me about it.

  18. Hey, Yandere Dev. There’s some question that bothers me:
    1) What you gonna do with Cowards?

    2) When atmosphere in a school low, a heroic students would be harder to eliminate?

    3) What routines would be have a Cooking Club members and Drama Club members?

    Have a nice day!

    • 1) Probably make them run and hide in closets, making it impossible to eliminate them as witnesses unless you find the key to unlock the closet door.

      2) I think this would be a good idea.

      3) Please wait; you’ll see.

  19. Hi!
In a very old video, you said the game was inspired by 3 games, hitman for social stealth assassination, persona for the school scheduling and simulation, but you said you will talk about that third mysterious games later and you never did! Was this game bully? I see the animation of the school teacher stopping yandere chan being the exact same! Will you ever talk about that game? Good work on yansim anyway, it’s a game design many people tried to achieved but failed, if you succeed you will be a design legend.

  20. YANDEREDEV YANDEREDEV! When you start usingg Unity 2017, do you think that you can add multiple clubs at once again? It was SO cool when you did it last time, and I REALLY wanna see what you do with the remaining 5 clubs (I’m counting Gaming because it’s not finished yet). Also, how come you never worked on the Music club? After you added the Photography Club, there were 5 unfinished clubs that didn’t involve the rivals (Gaming, Science, Music, Gardening, Art). Gaming, you just needed the leader. Science, you added silhouettes of the members. Gardening and Art, you had placeholder students. Music is the only one of those 5 that you didn’t have independent changes in.

      • I wanted to make a “Wow!! Cool!!” type of update, and I also wanted to be able to create a video where I explain how different clubs all serve different purposes as “walking security cameras”.

The other clubs I need to add to the game involve some assets that I don’t currently have, so I’ll need to request/review/implement new assets before I can add the other clubs.

  21. YandereDev, this question has been bugging me for a while now, but is Yandere-chan a psychopath? I know that she is emotionless, but she has a lot of psychopathic traits, like manipulation, lack of empathy and remorse and so on.

    • I’m not sure how to categorize her, myself. She meets *some* of the criteria for psychopathy (and *some* of the criteria for sociopathy) but she doesn’t really match the definition 100%. You can imagine that she has a mix of multiple disorders, or a fictional disorder.

    1) Where do you get your assets for the game?

    2) I know that Mulberry draws a lot of the artwork, but what software do you use to make your videos?

  23. Also, Ynadere Dev, I have some questions to you. ( ̄ω ̄; )

    1) Would be weather changes in the game?

    2) How about make a student a volunteer shopkeeper, who can give a students and you food?

    3) What do you plan to do with the maze?

    4) Will it be more difficult to kill a teacher in the final version of the game? Because now, they could be easily beaten.

    5) Do you enjoy Anime Expo 2018? Hope you okay.

    • 1) Probably not, since it would have a huge effect on gameplay, and I don’t want to make things more complicated then they already are.

      2) I’ve considered it, but I don’t want to plan any new features for the game.

      3) Right now it’s kinda just there to give symmetry to the school, but I may remove it in the future.

      4) Probably, yes.

      5) I did!

  24. YANDEREDEV YANDEREDEV! I’m sorry if I’m asking too many questions, but I forgot about this one. How m.uch time do you estimate it will take to add the next club? Don’t rush yourself; I’m just interested

  25. Yandere Dev Yandere Dev
    I have three questions?
1.when you implement the cooking, drama and sports club will the club leaders be there
2.will yandere simulator be on playstation
3.when will you release a video that you teased us in your march progress 2017 the video was blurry and pink and the video was also on update schedule video
By the way your the best developer wish the best of luck on the game

    • 1) Yes, but they will be temporary leaders, standing in for Amai / Kizana / Asu.

      2) It’s too early to say; I’m sorry.

      3) I want to do it eventually, but not yet.

      Thanks for your kind words!

    1) Why is Oka in the game?

    2) Will you add Amai, Kizanna, and Asu early like with Oka until you add Osana?

    3) How will you be able to join if the president isn’t at school yet? PLEASE don’t keep those creepy placeholder husks.

    • 1) After I got her hair model, I couldn’t resist throwing her into the game. I’ll eventually have to remove her, though.

      2) Nah – they won’t be added until I begin working on implementing them as rivals.

      3) There will be “substitute club leaders” who fill in for the absent club leaders. Not the husks, though.

  27. Yandere dev Yandere dev! How’s it going at the anime expo? I hope you’re having a fun time!
    Anyway I have a question..
When wiill you add props to each empty room?… (Like the Calligraphy room)

    • I am reconsidering whether or not certain rooms (like the Calligraphy room) should be removed. I won’t commit to populating those rooms with props until I’ve decided whether or not to remove them.

  28. a few questions:
    (1) When the cooking club is added will the members still be the 6 main girls, or entirely new students?
    (2) What will you do with the 12 main students if they aren’t in clubs?
    (3) can you possibly add a feature where you can teleport to the incinerator?

I absolutely adore your game and have been playing is since it was made! Keep up the good work, YandereDev!

  29. Hey, guys. I think I know what the “Mysterious Obstacle” is. It’s Osana’s sister, probably an older one. The promo image he showed with her arm had a female uniform, and he showed the diagram of her house in one of his videos. One of rooms is labeled “Sister’s room”. Also, it just makes sense that an older sister would be protective of her younger sister.

  30. YANDEREDEV YANDEREDEV! You forgot something on the checklist! You forgot the ability to join the student council and the delinquents!

  31. Hey, Yandere Dev. Shouldn’t Horuda be eating like everyone else at lunchtime? It would take less than a minute to change to text in the JSON from ‘Read’ to ‘Eat.’ It’s a polishing thing, but it would be cool if you’d add it.

  32. Yandere dev, is something extremely interesting is that the girl has heart problems in an extreme situation for example a murder died of a heart attack, could be even a new person.

  33. Hey there YandereDev, I think it’s awesome that you’re addressing all of the questions in the comments – Not to mention i’m glad you got an extra programmer to help you out! If i can say anything, I’m really glad with the openness in the blog posts and honesty in them. Keep up the good work.

Minor question: Is 90 students the general amount of students you want to have in the game, or a rough minimum/maximum? (Also, Do the teachers count as ‘student’ slots?)

    • I think that 90 students is the absolute minimum, although I am concerned that it may be the maximum because of technical limitations. The number of students in the final game will depend on what kind of advancements/optimizations/improvements we’re able to make with the game’s code and framerate.

Teachers count as “NPCs present at school” but not as “Students”. I want to have 100 NPCs, 90 students.

  34. Hi, YandereDev! I’ve been following the development of Yandere Simulator for a long time now and I just wanted to say you’re doing an amazing job as a game developer, keep doing what you, we’ll always support you!

Also, I found a bug(?), when you activate Yandere Vision and get pushed by a student council member or a delinquent, Yandere Vision disappears but the outlines get very weird, please fix this bug, it’s kind of creepy lol.

  35. Yandere Dev! I have a question! Will Sakura Hagiwara be one of those characters where you can frame as an accidental death? As for example, since she has an incurable heart disease, will it be possible for Yandere-chan to just kill her(by breaking her neck) and the cops will think it was of the disease?

  36. It’s a little late now, but Yanderedev, do you plan to add NPC students besides those in the clubs, like random students that wouldn’t have much to them other than a name that would simply walk around (Like the civillians in Hitman)?

I think I remember reading somewhere that there was a stigma for students at Akidemi being clubless, but maybe?

  37. Hey yandere dev what club(s) will you work on next, by the way I cant wait for the music and drama club
