Does Yandere Simulator really need a small town?

In 2015 and 2016, I asked fans for a lot of feedback, but rarely did I ever make videos acknowledging that feedback or announcing how it would affect the game moving forward. I was planning to make a “Tying Up Loose Ends” video, where I’d finally address many of the subjects that never received proper closure in 2015 or 2016. As I started writing out the script for this video, I realized that one specific topic – the subject of adding a small town into Yandere Simulator – was so multifaceted that I could create an entire video about that one subject alone. So, here’s a video about that one issue!

Here are the polls that I’d like you to vote on:

I’m sure that many of you are thinking, “Don’t talk about that! Talk about Osana! What is the latest progress on Osana?”

If that’s what you’d really like to hear about, then click “Continue Reading” to hear what I’ve been doing over the past 2 weeks.

Osana Progress

Jan 17th~22nd went exactly as predicted in my blog post from Jan 16th:

  • I took Jan 17th off.
  • I spent Jan 18th catching up on e-mails from the previous day.
  • I took Jan 19th off.
  • I spent Jan 20th catching up on e-mails from the previous day.
  • I spent Jan 21st making my 18-minute video about Twitch.
  • I spent Jan 22nd catching up on e-mails from the previous day.

I was hoping that I’d be able to work on Osana from Jan 23rd to Jan 30th…but it didn’t work out that way. I overestimated how much attention the Twitch video would get. A LOT of people contacted me to speak about Twitch. Some of them were former employees, some of them were current employees, some of them were friends of employees. None of them were an official Twitch spokesperson. I still don’t have a concrete answer for why the game was banned, or if anything can be done about it…but I did learn many things about Twitch. Some of this information is what prompted me to spend another day making another video about Twitch.

Speaking with people about the Twitch issue ate up a lot of my time over the past 10 days, and so I didn’t get to make the kind of progress that I wanted to make. I don’t regret this at all, since I think it was important for me to invest some time into this issue, but I’m sure that a lot of people are going to be angry with me for letting it take up my time. Please allow me to explain my point of view:

Twitch is the 39th most popular website in America, and one of the top 100 most popular websites on the Internet. Twitch is probably the biggest source of exposure for a game besides YouTube. Not being allowed on Twitch means that there are millions of people who will never learn that your game exists, and will never broadcast your game for others to see. This is a huge problem that any game developer would be concerned about. I believe it was worth my time to try and resolve the problem.

Over the past 10 days, I did make progress on Osana, but it wasn’t code-related progress. Let me give you some examples of how Osana progressed during that time:

  • New voiced lines and animations
  • Fixes/adjustments to previous animations
  • New elimination-related models and textures
  • Fixing buggy aspects of Osana’s Monday interaction with Senpai
  • Acquiring the assets necessary to implement the “other factor” that will make eliminating Osana more difficult

Over the past two weeks, I didn’t make any progress towards implementing another one of Osana/Senpai’s interaction events. This is extremely disappointing to me, but please keep in mind that I have a LOT more business to attend to than JUST Osana. Over the past two weeks, I was:

  • Fixing numerous critical bugs that were being reported
  • Speaking with animators/artists/modellers/composers/voice actors
  • Arranging a very special surprise that I’ll be able to unveil next month
  • Implementing a backlog of assets that volunteers have been sending me over the past few months
  • Speaking to a lot of people about the Twitch dilemma

Over the past ten days, there was not a single day that passed when my focus was not 100% on Yandere Simulator. Despite that, zero progress was made towards the next Osana/Senpai interaction event.

I am Yandere Simulator’s lead programmer, but I am also responsible for everything else about the game, too:

  • New art doesn’t get made unless I’m speaking with artists.
  • New models don’t get made unless I’m speaking with modellers.
  • New music doesn’t get made unless I’m speaking with composers.
  • New animations don’t get made unless I’m speaking with animators.
  • New voice acting doesn’t get done unless I’m speaking with voice actors.

Developing Yandere Simulator is not as simple as sitting in a computer chair and writing code. There is a lot more do it than that. Sometimes an entire day will pass without a single opportunity to write any code at all, because I’m busy with other matters for 12 hours straight.

(…and then I check the comments section, and see people accusing me of being lazy…)

You can read more about this subject by clicking this link and scrolling down to where it says “Why is the game’s development so slow?

New Build

There’s a new build today! Here’s a list of everything that’s new in it:

  • Added a loading screen that will appear whenever the school scene is loading. (The game engine stops updating the screen after loading reaches a certain percentage, so you won’t see the animation for very long…)
  • Students now walk into school wearing fancy shoes and change into “indoor shoes” once they are inside the school. (The current “indoor shoes” texture for male students is not final.)
  • Fixed bug that would allow Yandere-chan to perform a low-sanity attack animation loop indefinitely while surrounded by being confronted by a Hero or Teacher trying to confront her.
  • Fixed bug that would cause students to focus their attention on students who were reacting to Yandere-chan committing murder, rather than on Yandere-chan herself.
  • Fixed bug that would cause Heroic students or Teachers to run in place while waiting for Yandere-chan to finish an attack animation.
  • Revamped the code for the Credits sequence so that it is much easier for me to add names of volunteers to the credits.
  • Fixed bug that would cause Yandere-chan to freeze when killing students summoned by the turtle in the Light Music Club.
  • Fixed bug that would cause Senpai to appear bald if noticing Yandere-chan while wearing one of the newest hairstyles.
  • Replaced Ryuto’s voiced lines with new lines that more appropriately convey how I imagine his personality.
  • Fixed bug that would cause less than four students attempt to perform a group takedown on Yandere-chan.
  • Fixed bug that would allow a single witness to count as two witnesses if they witnessed two murders.
  • Fixed bug that would cause Senpai to seemingly ignore Yandere-chan as she was committing murder.
  • Attempted to fix several long hairstyles that clip into Yandere-chan’s back when she runs.
  • Fixed bug that gave Yandere-chan green pigtails during the Befriend/Betray cutscene.
  • Fixed bug that caused distracted students to never exit the “distracted” state.
  • Replaced the old Nemesis portrait and icons with a new portrait and icons.
  • Fixed bug that caused Koharu to appear bald after witnessing murder.
  • Gave colored stockings and colored panties to the Rainbow Six.
  • Added physics to the “Miku Hatsune” hair style.
  • Added eight new hairstyles for Yandere-chan.
  • Added two new accessories for Yandere-chan.
  • Added a new hairstyle for Senpai.
  • Improved Koharu’s hair texture.
  • Added two new easter eggs.
  • Updated the credits.

What’s next?

Plans are great…when they’re in your imagination. Plans burst into flames as soon as they touch the real world.

My plan is to spend the next 2 weeks focusing as much time as possible on Osana. I have a surprise planned for Feb 14th, but it shouldn’t take up too much of my time between now and the next update.

Thank you for following the development of Yandere Simulator.

  1. A town IS a good idea but what if you instead of actual town or street you used a clickable view from the window?
Like, you get next to a window, press action button and camera shifts to a view of the town from a window. Here you can make clickable parts of town which lead directly to some places, like shops or someone’s apartments.
Making such thing will be easier than designing a full town or a street, right? With smooth loading cutscenes, it should even look pretty.

  2. I don’t really mind the waiting, with the updates twice a month. I know it should be finished asap, because of you, your patreons and so on, but the more methods of elimination, the longer it’ll be fun to play. the small town/street/buying over internet aren’t pertinent, but it’ll give the game more life

  3. Really? Part time jobs and stores to purchase items? minigames?! economy system?! Pretty sure you are leadding the game into a wrong direction.
What about the Balance? What about the need of Strategy making? This is a stealth game after all! It sure would be cool to have a new environment, but not for these reasons, keep the game to what it is supposed to be, and expand from there! theres so many reasons NOT to waste time building these unfitting elements… No stores or minigames and etc pls, or do have these but suttle them really really well.

(btw, Dev you need to change the school, again.
Maybe Consider a half-wooden structure with a different layout rather than a SQUARE building to fit the Atmosphere system better,

In my mind a 3 Floor, L shape, wooden floor, many windows on class room hallway facing the outside garden with a sharp rooftop as the teaching building for Class&Scool activities, etc. And a separate building to provide Clue activities, Lunch, Storage, etc with warm-toned floor Texture(similar to the ones the school is useing right now) with window only in rooms and a enterable flat rooftop. I cant think of a suitable shape thought… that should be able to look better and creat a good fitting overall atmosphere

With two buildings can enhance the Time and space element, Provide more circumstances inneed of strategy making, Provide more rooms if inneed, Provide more events(or so called “Opportunities”) and Creat a better look on the scool layout.

……..or just anything else than what we are having right now, anything better.)

    • I don’t see the problem as long as there’s alternative ways to complete tasks and obstacle removal.
About the school, most students funnel in the same straight conga-line into the central yard. Also, mine was built entirely out of stone, but still found room for heating. Also, it was rectangular-shaped. So, not every school fits your preference.
I have no idea what you mean by an “enterable flat rooftop”. Do you mean a staircase leading straight up to the roof from the ground floor? Definitely a boon for the third-years.

But I also think a “living town” would be too much nothing.
The bike only turns at right angles, making the ride a little less like an idea to expand upon.

  4. I thought of an idea for a town/street benefit.

Each week, or maybe even day there could be an event. Such as speed dating, book/manga club, anger management, educational classes etc. During speed dating, you could learn the ways that normal teens flirt. Boosting seduction. A book/manga club could ALSO boost seduction, along with others. Anger management may lessen the amount of sanity that you lose. Educational classes will boost your academic skills, maybe there would be a police officer talking about a murder case he worked on. Unlocking new elimination methods and disposal methods.

In another video you gave your thoughts on a panty shot alternative “Secrets/information” idea. I personally don’t mind panty shots, especially when you can use the censor. The main thing I dislike about it, is that multiple youtubers see it as a joke than an important game mechanic. Secrets seems a LOT more interesting, it would be a lot more fun. I personally LOVE character development, I like finding out about little details in a minor characters. So that’s why I’d like this.

It would be interesting to see yandere simulator have a few “choice aspects” featured in games such as the walking dead and life is strange, 2 games I love dearly. This gives games a lot of replay value! “What if this time I side against Kenny? Maybe this time I can try to save Kate?” meaning no play through is the same. Some actions have major consequences, some only have a slight change of dialog. When I really think about yandere-chan, she isn’t a psychopathic, raging killer. She’s a manipulator. Maybe by observing people in school or town, she can learn conversion starters or topics. Or putting the psychology study points to good use, allowing you to get inside peoples minds and lure out their secrets. Maybe even a drama club benefit? I dislike the current benefit, because after someone witnesses you commit murder in a mask the mask benefit is gone. And you have to burn the gloves. Maybe you can chose a route for how yandere-chan communicates with people? She can be caring, a good friend. Which means people will trust her with their secrets. She can be threatening, so people will confess to acts to avoid being harmed by yandere-chan. Once again, replay value is key. I don’t want to spend money on a game, finish it, and then think “Well that was fun, now what?”.

Also, if Ayano was to purchase alcahol wouldn’t they ask for an ID? I don’t know what it’s like in japan, but maybe Info-chan could sell you a false ID.

Well that’s my opinion I guess!

    • I like this. Chameleon makes a good point on replay value.
The police officer giving a talk would be interesting but he could also be investigating a disappearance or murder, if one has already happened.
I was thinking about the club system as well – coming to the same conclusion – , and this is what I came up with:
Biology and Chemistry could possibly benefit from the science club. This would involve a choice in the club assignment over a randomiser, unless you could split them into separate rooms.
Language could get a boost from the Drama Club. It could also be of use in the Science clubs, along the lines of explaining why you’re concocting tranquilisers and studying where to poke someone without drawing blood.
Phys Ed… Well, I didn’t have a good one for this beyond the existing benefits explained by the game itself.
I has the same idea for Psych as Chameleon, though.

On Ayano buying alcohol, I think the legal age in Japan is 20. ID checks in Japan are rare enough, but she’d have to carry a pretty damn good fake passport to get the beer, just in case. About Info-Chan selling you one: a small panty-shot mini game (say, three or four mini-quests chained together) could seal the deal as your asking her for a HUGE favour.

  5. I don’t think the small town is necessary. However I do think adding a street or a few other small environments would be a good addition to the game like they have in the persona series(parks, shopping districts, etc.) gives you time to see what sempai does outside of school and a few other methods to dispose of bodies and help with the elimination methods. Also imo I like the idea of part time job would also be a nice addition. I’m not a fan of the 2D thing though. I don’t know about the rest of the people here, but I really don’t mind waiting on this game. You keep us updated on how the development process is going and even give us the ability to play the game as you update it. So if the game takes a few more months to be finished than so be it. What I don’t want is a game that says its finished but is really just lacking content or is full of bugs. Think NMS, BF4(launch), Batman Arkahm Knight(pc version). I will HAPPILY wait for a better quality product than a game that does’t feel like there isn’t much going for it. You only get one opportunity to make a good impression when the game is finished. Make it count.

  6. A small town is definitely too ambitious for now, a shopping street is good enough to portray the idea that there’s a town and gives a different environment other than the school and Yan-chan’s house without being too big. I like the idea of Yan-chan receiving an allowance from her parents, but earning money from mini-games is also an attractive idea. You don’t have to play the mini-games to earn money, but if you want some extra cash you can do so, or if you want a break from the usual gameplay and get a little bonus sounds nice too. A lot of different part-time work mini-games can be made too: working at a maid cafe, working at a conbini, working at a bookstore, etc.

  7. I think a small town would offer a less constrained environment, and allow gameplay on the weekends instead of just skipping through. Senpai could also go on dates (non main rivals) which could help you either gain new sabotage methods or stalk Senpai to find out what he likes, since leaving him gifts and cheering him up may be a future feature (i.e. you find out he likes beef and rice (lame, I know, just an example). You would get the opportunity to make him his favorite meal and secretly leave it for him the next school day. Or, even better, you could get senpai to go on dates with you, small ones. Since you can make him fall in love with you and not just fear you, these could act the same as the interaction events he gets with the rivals. They would have less weight obv since it needs to stretch out over ten weeks. This won’t necessarily affect the main game play but it can be beneficial for small things, such as leaving better gifts or reducing the Senpai Aura after every date, again not by a super noticeable amount. It could also make him have a somewhat biased opinion of YanChan, the way he will with the rivals. For example, toward the middle of the game if one reports you to him (over something like a theft, not murder) he’ll have a hard or not believe her if you’ve had a certain number of interactions. And interactions don’t have to be official dates either, but obviously that would be putting a lot of stress on YandereDev. Another benefit is the ability to earn currency. This could be helpful in a number of ways. Currency means shops, which is an opening to actually give Senpai specific gifts and physically acquire it, instead of just pulling it out of the netherworld. You could also repurchase weapons you lost, not replaceable ones (scissors) but special ones like the kitana or some other future weapon. This would also put them in your home so you don’t have to spend time looking for them. This is a major opportunity for exploration, finding (or buying) either lost or town-specific weapons, stalking senpai, gaining reputation points with senpai specifically, earning money, and participating in a larger environment than just the school. And if the rival intro cut scene is on the weekend (Friday evening), Saturday morning. You could gain an extra day or two stalking your rival and finding things out. I know some might see this as an uneccessary advantage. But picture a small town, not huge but enough to render crowds, on a weekend when people shop and hang out with friends, and, maybe, you don’t have Yanderevision. Or at the least, it is significantly less controlled in a town environment, than in school with only 100 students. This would make it significantly more challenging to properly find and stalk your rival, especially if your suspicious behavior in terms of interacting with other characters can be noticed, like in many stealth games.
As for obtaining currency, I always pictured it similar to the Persona games. Where you can choose a specific job, but it’s simply a cut scene of you doing a specific action in that job. Time passes and you get money at the end of it. I think that’s a great way to simulate a job without having to go to the trouble of creating a mini game. The town environment is supposed to a fun opportunity for exploration, extra stalking, or significant time with senpai. Think of it sort of like DLC, its an option and not pertinent to the main game, but it gives you a little extra than what the main setting has to offer. I little more gameplay, a little more interactions, still a part of the official story but not required for the overall goal of the game. I feel like adding a mini game to do jobs would be a little too much. With all the possibilities a town offers, I think just simply pressing yes and watching the MC do the job is a nice way of earning money. And time would pass, probably between 2-4 hours depending on the job, so it’s not like there’s no consequences.
I understand this would extend the official release date and is putting stress on YandereDev, but I truly believe a town would be a good thing. The game is far from boring, but having that adventurous option of exploring an open world game, and all of the game benefits that could come with it, I think would be well worth the wait. The game is fun on it’s own, but the confinement of just home and school, while it plays very well on the Yandere personality, makes for a bit of a constrained environment. And if the Endless mode gets added, it would be nice to either regain or purchase/find new weapons (be it regular like a broken pipe, or an Easter Egg like Rena’s knife). Witnessing other people’s actions on the streets, such as a murder (it is a elimination game, cmon) or someone cooking a specific meal (so you can make lunch for senpai or for yourself), can also provide a wider variety to the game. I’m aware most, if not all, of these are not likely to happen, but I’m giving an image of what it could be. The game is awesome on it’s own, but adding a town would provide a lot of benefits and gameplay mechanics, rather than having to just be confined to home and Akedemi High School. No where else.

  8. I was hoping that maybe we could get money by pickpocketing. That way you can get money without having to work for it. You could pickpocket from different people in order to get money. Let’s say if you pickpocket from Musume Ronshaku.. if you pickpocket her you should be able to get more money than if you pickpocket someone like.. Kokona. It can work differently for different students.

  9. Personally, I do not believe that Yandere Simulator requires a small town, or town in general, since we already have a way of buying things from Info-Chan. Buying things off of your computer, however would be a pretty cool feature, as would having a job and/or allowance. Accessing that job doesn’t really need a town to travel to, since you could simply add the way of access being the same as walking to Yan-Chan’s door, and choosing whether to go to town, scool, basement, or ‘job choices’ maybe. That way, other than allowance, you would be able to save up extra money.

Another thing that may be nice would be adding an area for maybe an animation of Yan-Chan stalking/watching Senpai while he walks home.

    • It’s true but this could resolve the issue of the panties shot. I remember that some people had found the panties shot distasteful. In this way if you don’t want to take any panties shot for obtaining certain things you can.

  10. you should let the option of the street idea in “poal me”, I dont necessary want the small town, but I want the street, its a really good solution and is more dynamic!

  11. The second I hear about how little time (in comparison to a small town) a single street would take, I was sold. I can just SEE it. It’s such a good idea! I also liked the reference to Persona. While I like the idea of a full, 3D model game, I think I’d be happy with that kind of interaction… maybe still have 3D models, though? They look so nice, and I loved seeing Persona’s “Senpai” sitting at his desk, translating this and that or folding cranes and envelopes and— I’m getting off topic.

If something amazing happens, somehow, and the progress is sped up by a lot, by all means, please be ambitious if you want to be! This is the creator’s game above all else, and I think the creator should enjoy the game they’re creating. The street idea sounds good, so I’m really cheering for it, though.

  12. YandereDev isn’t just the one and only programmer, he’s also the game director, which is probably the most time consuming and stressful jobs of all. So the game’s development isn’t really slow paced if you think about it. I mean seriously, he’s one guy doing A WHOLE TEAM’S work, and still he somehow manages more or less 2 updates a month. In my opinion that is just absolutely amazing 🙂

  13. Really bugs me when people say Yanderedev is lazy. It makes me want to go Yandere on THEM. Or start to believe the fanbase really is made out of preteens….or people that have no life and don’t know what hard work really is.

  14. I really like the idea of a street. I think that when you go to your part-time job, there should be 3D animations for each job, with a minigame to determine you if you did well. Here’s an idea, there should be some shady people on the street which you have a low chance of seeing, if you do see them, you can hire them to eliminate someone who is NOT a rival, and buy expensive weapons from them. Well, that’s up to you. But back to what you said in the video, I really don’t think we need a town, a street would be nice and fun, and wouldn’t take a year. And sabotaging dates outside of school is also a good idea, I think if Yandere-Chan’s on her waitress job, there should be the choice to poison a drink only then without looking suspicious. I really hope this helps, and I look forward to everything you’re going to do with the game.

  15. To be honest, I think YandereDev should go with the “Single Street” option. It would be like going to, I dunno, Diagon Alley? Diagon Alley is jam-packed of shops and other buildings while being in a single alley. Of course, the Street shouldn’t be just a straight line. Also, I love the idea of part-time jobs! It allows us to take a break from the main gameplay and refresh ourselves with some minigames. Yandere-Chan in a maid outfit is just way too cute! Maybe the gameplay for the Maid Cafe would be like games such as Hello Kitty Cafe or Diner Dash. Maybe you should also include part-time jobs for Retail shops, maybe Yandere-Chan can be a shop clerk, a mascot and other part time jobs.

  16. ok guys i have a great idea instead of fully functional buildings only small portion of the city can be free to explore the so called ilusion of open world like for example yandere chan s house a weapon store a cafe/restaorant and the main enemy s house other buildings can be empty

  17. I love the idea of a single street! If it would cut down on the time of development while still adding some amazing features, I’m all in! So here’s my thoughts:
Yandere-chan could get both an allowance from her parents and money from a part-time job. So her parents would only give her a small amount of money and the player can choose to get more money by doing a part-time job. However, this is just a thought and just adding a part-time job as a way of making money is fine, as well.

I would love if the inside of stores could be 3D models too instead of just a 2D screen, but for sake of time and effort, 2D would be fine if that will make your life easier.

As for the part-time job, I would love if a text screen popped up and you just chose an option to possibly make more money because as of right now, that is what happens when you do a club activity. HOWEVER, if you do decide to make a 2D game (3D games would be too hard and 2D is cool anyways), you should also make 2D minigames for club activities. Both options work great, but I believe the club activities and part-time job should be similar.

Overall, I love all the ideas you proposed and these are just my opinions/suggestions. Thank you for working so hard Yandere Dev :)

  18. i think stores AND internet shopping should be implemented along with a limited allowance AND jobs. the internet stores would take a couple days to deliver needing forward thinking but be things unavailable in stores or things that would be suspicious otherwise, meanwhile physical stores are immediate but require you to be careful just incase people from school see you and spread rumours.

  19. The “dumping corpses in the ocean” option didn’t really seemed good to me, since in real life police would eventually find them.. and the game is designed to be quite realistic, right?

Aaaaaaniway, is quite fun seeing how the first poll is a 50/50 at the moment!

  20. Personally, I think it would be nice to have a town. However, I think it would be much more efficient if yandev implemented a street, allowing yanchan to buy weaponry, hairstyles, access to a part-time job and so on. I think it would be better to have 2D gameplay of part-time jobs because I found the use of courtship with a rival and a male student an interesting perspective on the gameplay. Additionally, the part-time job wouldn’t consume too much of the player’s time if it were a 2D game. Also, less strain on the amount of time for it to be implemented. Again, it would be nice to have a town but I think being limited to an environment is actually more interesting. Because the player would be focusing on reputation and not being caught. If it were a town, yanchan could probably get away with her actions because her reputation would not be affected by students-unless yandev plans on using town reputation.
Also, I quite like the idea of having yanchan earning money from her parents by the end of the week. That way, the player would have to be strategic about the money they use, sort of like how you can only join one club and once quitting, you can’t return to it in the full game. But if not, then perhaps shops could allow you to sell items? As well as buy them. Maybe even depending on the club your in, you could have discounts/lower prices whilst buying objects.

  21. TL;DR OPINION SUMMARY: I say just skip it for this first game and get your game done and out there before it becomes the next over developed and delayed Duke Nukem. Best thought is if you really hit success then make it a part of some future game. LoveSick 2: Yandere-San. My one caveat is to make a street, and maybe then a town, Kickstarter stretch goals of reasonably significant level that you know you could hire enough professionals to really knock the development time down.

    DETAILED
Stores in General – ultimately feels like a lot of work for little gain, almost like there are too many stores and each one just helps with one or two aspects of a couple of elimination methods or giving explanation to an existing game function.
Side Activities – I think you’d be best expanding these within the school somehow rather than a whole giant world for a few scattered games. Like a mini-game to re-wire the light switch and I’m sure there are many more.
Weapons – I liked the internet order idea but you can make it more difficult by dis-allowing her to walk directly past the sports teacher into school and having to smuggle them in somehow or need to send to an absent teacher at the school, locate and steal it there, then there’s info-chan and more opportunities for theft from school visitors such as construction workers (someone has to put up that fence on the roof).
Work Jobs – Feels like it deviates too far from the main gameplay
Dispose of corpses/locations to stalk – I feel like the time could be better spent maybe adding more buildings and locations to the school, some of which could even change as the weeks pass. A new wing/building under construction (off limits unless you can sneak past and yay for stealing construction equipment and disposing of corpses in freshly poured cement or construction bins).
Weekend Side Missions – Meh, weekend club activities on school grounds or even trying to break in which could be tougher than it sounds with locked doors and instant expulsion if caught.
Earn/Buy collectibles rather than find lying around – I feel like you can work on a theft, favour and exchange angle instead, where she can steal the items from other student’s lockers, bags, desks and even pickpocket, or in exachange for some of the favours you’ve already setup, or other items like another girl’s underware. Heck, thrown away in a waste paper basket.
Feeling of being trapped – certainly a big one there but again, more buildings and features like a bus stop. However the feeling isn’t all that unusual to a younger high-school student who is confined to school grounds and generally limited to going straight home.

Adding at LEAST a year – I pay particular notice to that “least” word. Osana is understandably taking longer than expected as the first true rival and I’d imagine lessons are learned and the remaining rivals will go more to schedule, but I feel like a town will just be Osana’s extended development.
Too Ambitious – The project is already VERY ambitious but, i feel, successful and achievable within it’s present parameters. You could spend your entire life adding more and more.

Can’t add town later – Agree, let mods have fun with it
Yandere simulator 2 – Hell yeah, now that sounds like a great feature and reason to possibly look forward to a sequel. Gotta give ’em something significantly extra in any sequel… otherwise it may as well be an expansion pack.

One Street – Yeah, here’s where I really saw the many stores for few gains. *The book store could just as easily be online manga
*The Salon could just as easily be her bathroom and vanity at home
*Game store, steam or theft/trade/favour/pickpocket at school
*Supermarket to feed the kidnapped… doesn’t make sense, how is she feeding herself? Just use her existing refrigerator and pantry if you have something special in mind around that.
*Electronics, Convenience and Hardware. Again just theft/trade/favour/pickpocket at school, even from teachers or maybe teacher’s cars parked somewhere or even previously confiscated items. If there’s construction on school or a wood/metal workshop for students, that gives you tools as well.

Cash/Working/Allowance – It all feels like its getting a little too far away from the social stealth core of the game. I’d rather she could simply trade her panty shots directly with certain unscrupulous boys (and girls inclined that way) at school to expand that currency, or theft/pickpocketing or favours such as stealing another girl’s underware. Naturally the panty shots are lost once traded since the boy posts them around and they loose their exclusivity.

Cafe/Theatre – Admittedly a good reason and expands further on the social stealth mechanics

    CONCLUSION:
1 – Core game: Social Stealth
2 – Time to release is abundantly important
3 – It can always be greater, but it’s already going to be great and that is enough without being merely enough.

  22. I vote for adding a street, rather than a small town. As I see it, the street would offer most of (if not all of) the advantages, and would not take nearly as much time to develop.

I’d also vote for Yandere chan getting a *small* allowance at the end of every week, but having the opportunity to earn *more* money by taking up part-time jobs, possibly with some jobs requiring Yandere-chan’s stats to be above a certain threshold, but in return allowing for Yandere-chan to make more money. For example, Yandere-chan could get a better job that paid more money such as helping out by moving furniture and stuff like that, but would require high strength in order to apply; after all, if you’re not strong enough to do the job, then they obviously wouldn’t bother hiring you!

I do think the part-time jobs should feature a gameplay element as well, rather than just picking an option and then watching cash roll in, but I don’t have any strong opinions on whether these minigames should be 2D or 3D. I’d be down with either!

  23. How difficult would it be to edit script in the existing town? I mean, maybe a few volunteers could work on the assets needed, and then the area edited as necessary. It would put to good use the existing components of the game as well as add something interesting.

  24. People have to stop accusing Devpai of being lazy. Just because you don’t see him doing the work doesn’t mean you can somehow assume he’s not doing anything. He works way harder than most people.

    • Don’t get that either. He’s clearly NOT lazy. Stuff takes time, that’s why I vote for less stuff, so we have a game in less time and Y-Dev can move on to the next installment.

Leave it to the mods to add all that. Gotta give ’em something

  25. There’s a problem with part time jobs. Aren’t the main characters despite the “18” legal placeholer underage. Parental allowance does make much more for sense for highschoolers.

It could be determined in how well you do in class. Can be being late for class or adding a minigame with hm basic math tests etc to increase or decrease the weekly allowance. I mean the story plays in a school after all.. If the player fails too many times he or she can even drop out from school and loose the game.

As much as I would like the town or street but it’s delaying the game. Please let’s set priority on a long delayed core mechanic. The rivals.

The clubs are slowly coming together
Half the schoolground has placeholders, empty space
    Rivals aren’t here
Storyline and background to make the npc’s more alive aren’t here
    etc.. etc..

I’d say the list is long enough. Let’s not make another half finished core mechanic and finish the open constructionsites first.

    • The main one for me is that it doesn’t really add to the social stealth core of the game. The only component mentioned which does is the idea of stalking and sabotaging Senpai when he’s meeting with a rival outside school.

If I was going to have any after school location it’d probably be Senpai’s house where the stealth mechanic could be used to watch him and maybe give a bonus to maintaining sanity or gather new intelligence from conversations and observations, sneaking right into his home to steal items for the shrine or even sabotaging the rival in other ways (particularly if she’s over for some help with her studies).

The best part is the choice to visit could hamper other activities that could be done at home such as reading torturing, reading manga and gaming.

      • I just love how that part of the fanbase that makes sense is awake. Maybe sounds selfish but I can’t take another year in wait.
Yeah I get it. The idea is very intruding. But do you want core mechanics delayed again for having 2 half done core mechanics or one that has been delayed for a very long time.

        Let’s set priorities for once.

      • Oh I agree. All of these extra places from Towns to Senpai’s house to even more buildings and significant features will just delay delay delay

The hardcore fanbase will ALWAYS be forgiving and they are strong in number despite how the voices of the disgruntled might bite deeper. But simply put there will always be more that could be added and the game is already good enough that with a kickstarter and quick completion of the already planned features (rivals, story, etc) the hardcore fanbase will be a small portion of those who buy and play the game in the end.

But delay, delay and delay and your hardcore fanbase will still be there… but it’ll be a much larger portion of those who buy and play the game… and not because you’ve grown a larger hardcore fanbase…

If this is truly a game which is hopeful to be taken seriously then it’s development and the decisions on what awesome features to add and what to drop will be equally telling of the maturity surrounding it’s development. Shayalaman said he learnt at film school that a filmmaker had to be prepared to cut his/her favourite scene for the sake of the film.

      • I’m that “hardcore” to have 60 murica pesos in my paypal for this game. But certainly not to get hyped for another year.

That’s the same with the failing amd. Pushing ryzen but failed to release when the hype was at it’s sweetspot. Would have bought it but it wasn’t ready. Instead updated haswell to a kabylake system. Only way they can impress me now is vega. Gtx 960 is showing it’s age.
Blah blah ramble get to the point, fruitcake. K K T_T”

There’s a certain point what can be delayed but once the hype is over it won’t impress anymore. I doubt a fanbase can be that hardcore to endure another 12 months for a respectively minor addition. Instead I expect them to get disappointed, spouting and eventual leaving.

You can tell by “the twitch thing” outside a few honest callbacks tatemae is strong with this fanbase. Honest no one cares. Why do it right before osana implemention instead on a less “busy” point in time. No drama, is forgiven but that’s one of the stupid decisions needing put a friendly reminder on PRIORITIES.

I’m part of the fanbase but I should be allowed to voice my disagree when it applies.

    • Plenty of students have part-time jobs in Japan, despite being under 18 years of age.

Minimum legal working age is after you finish Junior High School, which would be age 15-16 in Japan (this is excluding child actors, who can start earlier), though obviously some jobs will have higher age requirements and whatnot. But stuff like working in supermarkets, lugging boxes around or other physical labor, or just working in a café and stuff like that? Yeah, that’s pretty common, though some high schools don’t allow their students to have part-time jobs, and they can’t work above a certain number of hours per week.

  26. Imagining that YanSim takes place in a town or city the size of the one I studied in in France (little over 200,000 people), I can say that all the “environments” I existed in could be condensed into: home, school, and the main part of town, which was a more or less one, really complicated street that took about 20 minutes to go end to end, and what I used could be put in a street like in the video. If it exists in a really small town, like my hometown of 6000 people, then welp, there’s only one useful street anyway. So, I vote street if small town at all.

I like a mix between online shopping and going out. Japan has pretty strict laws on what minors can buy, right? It’d probably be easier to fudge it online than in person, and it’d also force some more planning and strategy. You can’t just buy this thing (say a certain weapon, maybe a syringe that would let you get around sneaking that out of the nurse’s office, or something like that) and get everything done tomorrow, you have to order it a day or two in advance, so go into every week with a plan, or for some rivals, plan weeks in advance.

  27. your doing this game at your own phase plus I think everyone will agree here that we rather see a final well planed game then a rushed one so please don’t ever feel pressured on finishing this game sooner, also why not implement an in-game purchase option like most mmo rpg, where the player have 2 options grind to get in game currency or pay real money to buy in-game currency.

    • I personally dislike the idea of a SECOND currency in the game. The pantyshot currency is GREAT because it uses the exact core mechanic of social stealth to obtain, takes precious time and comes with risk on reputation

  28. Do the 2D games to earn money, you can pre-release them on mobile devices as either a KickStarter incentive or a way to build up hype for the game.
I like the idea of a street; it sounds a lot like South Street in Philadelphia, that might actually be a good model.

  29. Why didn’t you add a “single street” option to the “small town” poll?

Also, I really enjoyed the game Bully because it has a small town to explore but this is an indie game so I wouldn’t mind if it was just a single street. also doesn’t this game take place in the span of seven in game days? adding a small town would be kind of pointless then right? because you really wouldn’t be able to explore it with the limited time you have. in conclusion I think the single Street would be the best option.

  30. “The Street”-town is much more realistic concept, in my opinion. And it wouldn’t slow the development as severely, as a town.
Also, feeling of being trapped in one or two locations isn’t so frightening. After all the player does not play as an innocent bystander, like other students. It’s not Yandere-chan, who is trapped, it’s them…

    • HEHE. I like that idea. She’s not trapped in the school with them… they’re trapped in the school with her.

Really though, it’s no so unlike a young high school girl to be confined to school grounds and limited in her travels outside of school hours.

Plus as far as Ayano is concerned, there is almost no world outside of where Senpai is…

  31. In my opinion, buying items from shops is not a good idea, it doesnt fit well with the rest of the game and I think it would lead the game in the wrong direction. What an unpopular opinion I have…

  32. single street sounds great, but it feels too liniar. how about a street cross?
That might be better solution, you’ll still have those great additions in your game and game would feel much better.

  33. Would it be possibly to add multiple Jobs to the game to have a different ways of earning money with their own consequences. For example you could work at a cinema and get very little money but have the opportunity to ruin dates with Senpai easier. You could also work at something like the Maid cafe and get paid more and have opportunities like tips to get more money. But if someone at school learns that you work there your reputation would go down. For later game opportunities when you join the delinquents it could be possible that you could do illegal means to get money meaning that you get lots of money with the disadvantages of being a delinquent.

  34. Personally, I like the idea of a Town, though I don’t think a full town would be necessary to enjoy the game or not get bored of the environment.

But what if instead of a street that requires the modals and coding. What if whenever Yan-Chan decides to leave School, her home or a location in town, The player is presented with either a list of locations (Stores, places to earn money, stalk Senpai etc.) similar to Persona 4, or a Map of the town either clickable locations. Both of which would take you straight to the interior or “main” part of each location. That way only the interior of shops and other buildings would need to have modals.

  35. I really like street idea I think that would definitely work more than a small town but for the dates and ocean/sea option discussed in benefits of having a small town I think it would be a good idea if you added a small park area which could be accessible from the street or as other location you can pick from in town or something where there could be a small lake where you could possibly dump bodies or whatever and where you could sabotage a date between sempai and rivals on the weekend also so that depending on rival it could be either the cafe, theatre or the park… But nothing big just like small lake, a bench or two and picnic area or whatever I think something like that would be cool 🙂 Regardless tho I personally think street is the best option.

  36. I REALLY hope that we get a 3D minigame. Seeing YanChans model in a maid uniform? Priceless, and so cute. I also agree with the one street idea. But i think YanChan should get allowence, but if she needs more then the minigame is available. In the cafe it could be like diner dash! Im just worried about how much you can see from the school, cause right now you can see The Endless Void As It Consumes The Rest Of The World. Ya know?

  37. I think light novel style menu for Saturday/Sunday (just select the store from a list/map – get a location background and list of actions to choose from) is enough to add quite a lot for gameplay without making development much longer.

As for money I find activity at school more interesting to get some – for example – stealing from students/teachers to get money, but it will drop atmosphere even if you get away with it. Killing and then taking stuff should work as well, if you can hide it and get it later. Or join delinquents and make others pay. Or beat delinquents and get some money they stole from others. Or get into school council and abuse your position. Or blackmail using dark secrets.
Part time jobs are good as well, they can also be more or less efficient based on Yan-chan skills (like if you joined cooking club and spent 5 days in club activity, you’ll get some bonuses as a maid or something).

I really want as many features and ways to play as possible, but without making development take forever. All that 3d stuff like town or even street are great from Yandere Sim 2.

  38. If you added the internet feature then it would have to be made “realistic” so there would have to be delays and it coming broken, not coming after 3 months, not being a described as well as NOTHING EVER BEING IN STOCK etc. so really the internet would be the most challenging thing in the game. (This is a joke btw)
