Does Yandere Simulator really need a small town?

In 2015 and 2016, I asked fans for a lot of feedback, but rarely did I ever make videos acknowledging that feedback or announcing how it would affect the game moving forward. I was planning to make a “Tying Up Loose Ends” video, where I’d finally address many of the subjects that never received proper closure in 2015 or 2016. As I started writing out the script for this video, I realized that one specific topic – the subject of adding a small town into Yandere Simulator – was so multifaceted that I could create an entire video about that one subject alone. So, here’s a video about that one issue!

Here are the polls that I’d like you to vote on:

I’m sure that many of you are thinking, “Don’t talk about that! Talk about Osana! What is the latest progress on Osana?”

If that’s what you’d really like to hear about, then click “Continue Reading” to hear what I’ve been doing over the past 2 weeks.

Osana Progress

Jan 17th~22nd went exactly as predicted in my blog post from Jan 16th:

  • I took Jan 17th off.
  • I spent Jan 18th catching up on e-mails from the previous day.
  • I took Jan 19th off.
  • I spent Jan 20th catching up on e-mails from the previous day.
  • I spent Jan 21st making my 18-minute video about Twitch.
  • I spent Jan 22nd catching up on e-mails from the previous day.

I was hoping that I’d be able to work on Osana from Jan 23rd to Jan 30th…but it didn’t work out that way. I overestimated how much attention the Twitch video would get. A LOT of people contacted me to speak about Twitch. Some of them were former employees, some of them were current employees, some of them were friends of employees. None of them were an official Twitch spokesperson. I still don’t have a concrete answer for why the game was banned, or if anything can be done about it…but I did learn many things about Twitch. Some of this information is what prompted me to spend another day making another video about Twitch.

Speaking with people about the Twitch issue ate up a lot of my time over the past 10 days, and so I didn’t get to make the kind of progress that I wanted to make. I don’t regret this at all, since I think it was important for me to invest some time into this issue, but I’m sure that a lot of people are going to be angry with me for letting it take up my time. Please allow me to explain my point of view:

Twitch is the 39th most popular website in America, and one of the top 100 most popular websites on the Internet. Twitch is probably the biggest source of exposure for a game besides YouTube. Not being allowed on Twitch means that there are millions of people who will never learn that your game exists, and will never broadcast your game for others to see. This is a huge problem that any game developer would be concerned about. I believe it was worth my time to try and resolve the problem.

Over the past 10 days, I did make progress on Osana, but it wasn’t code-related progress. Let me give you some examples of how Osana progressed during that time:

  • New voiced lines and animations
  • Fixes/adjustments to previous animations
  • New elimination-related models and textures
  • Fixing buggy aspects of Osana’s Monday interaction with Senpai
  • Acquiring the assets necessary to implement the “other factor” that will make eliminating Osana more difficult

Over the past two weeks, I didn’t make any progress towards implementing another one of Osana/Senpai’s interaction events. This is extremely disappointing to me, but please keep in mind that I have a LOT more business to attend to than JUST Osana. Over the past two weeks, I was:

  • Fixing numerous critical bugs that were being reported
  • Speaking with animators/artists/modellers/composers/voice actors
  • Arranging a very special surprise that I’ll be able to unveil next month
  • Implementing a backlog of assets that volunteers have been sending me over the past few months
  • Speaking to a lot of people about the Twitch dilemma

Over the past ten days, there was not a single day that passed when my focus was not 100% on Yandere Simulator. Despite that, zero progress was made towards the next Osana/Senpai interaction event.

I am Yandere Simulator’s lead programmer, but I am also responsible for everything else about the game, too:

  • New art doesn’t get made unless I’m speaking with artists.
  • New models don’t get made unless I’m speaking with modellers.
  • New music doesn’t get made unless I’m speaking with composers.
  • New animations don’t get made unless I’m speaking with animators.
  • New voice acting doesn’t get done unless I’m speaking with voice actors.

Developing Yandere Simulator is not as simple as sitting in a computer chair and writing code. There is a lot more do it than that. Sometimes an entire day will pass without a single opportunity to write any code at all, because I’m busy with other matters for 12 hours straight.

(…and then I check the comments section, and see people accusing me of being lazy…)

You can read more about this subject by clicking this link and scrolling down to where it says “Why is the game’s development so slow?

New Build

There’s a new build today! Here’s a list of everything that’s new in it:

  • Added a loading screen that will appear whenever the school scene is loading. (The game engine stops updating the screen after loading reaches a certain percentage, so you won’t see the animation for very long…)
  • Students now walk into school wearing fancy shoes and change into “indoor shoes” once they are inside the school. (The current “indoor shoes” texture for male students is not final.)
  • Fixed bug that would allow Yandere-chan to perform a low-sanity attack animation loop indefinitely while surrounded by being confronted by a Hero or Teacher trying to confront her.
  • Fixed bug that would cause students to focus their attention on students who were reacting to Yandere-chan committing murder, rather than on Yandere-chan herself.
  • Fixed bug that would cause Heroic students or Teachers to run in place while waiting for Yandere-chan to finish an attack animation.
  • Revamped the code for the Credits sequence so that it is much easier for me to add names of volunteers to the credits.
  • Fixed bug that would cause Yandere-chan to freeze when killing students summoned by the turtle in the Light Music Club.
  • Fixed bug that would cause Senpai to appear bald if noticing Yandere-chan while wearing one of the newest hairstyles.
  • Replaced Ryuto’s voiced lines with new lines that more appropriately convey how I imagine his personality.
  • Fixed bug that would cause less than four students attempt to perform a group takedown on Yandere-chan.
  • Fixed bug that would allow a single witness to count as two witnesses if they witnessed two murders.
  • Fixed bug that would cause Senpai to seemingly ignore Yandere-chan as she was committing murder.
  • Attempted to fix several long hairstyles that clip into Yandere-chan’s back when she runs.
  • Fixed bug that gave Yandere-chan green pigtails during the Befriend/Betray cutscene.
  • Fixed bug that caused distracted students to never exit the “distracted” state.
  • Replaced the old Nemesis portrait and icons with a new portrait and icons.
  • Fixed bug that caused Koharu to appear bald after witnessing murder.
  • Gave colored stockings and colored panties to the Rainbow Six.
  • Added physics to the “Miku Hatsune” hair style.
  • Added eight new hairstyles for Yandere-chan.
  • Added two new accessories for Yandere-chan.
  • Added a new hairstyle for Senpai.
  • Improved Koharu’s hair texture.
  • Added two new easter eggs.
  • Updated the credits.

What’s next?

Plans are great…when they’re in your imagination. Plans burst into flames as soon as they touch the real world.

My plan is to spend the next 2 weeks focusing as much time as possible on Osana. I have a surprise planned for Feb 14th, but it shouldn’t take up too much of my time between now and the next update.

Thank you for following the development of Yandere Simulator.

    • This is just my personal input here.. but I don’t feel that the lack of a town would make the game boring. In a sense, I think that the town and the ability to go to different stores to purchase things would kind of ‘devalue’ the things you can already receive from Infochan … Unless there are unique items you can only get from this town. However, since apparently there are people who have an issue with the pantyshot feature ( -facepalm- ), This would be a great alternative.

      • Frankly I’d much rather seen an expansion of the panty shot currency if anything. It’s already a great mechanic where the work to obtain them is a further expansion of the social stealth game core.

Just allow trading of them with certain, unscrupulous boys at school who might own or have items like a camcorder, or further expand the social stealth of stealing and pick pocketing.

I guess if the pantyshot feature ever DID become just too much of an issue you could switch to pick-pocketing collectible cards that students carry or something equally simple… guess that would bring the boys into play as well.

  1. Frankly a town sounds unrealistic, fam. The school itself isn’t even close to being fleshed out. If you want to keep the quality and density of content up, you can’t have a small town, as cool as it would be. Even if we put the practicality of you completing all of that work: Are you really motivated? You don’t seem too thrilled with the town idea. If you aren’t personally hyped for it, then don’t do it.

  2. I’m really excited to see your development with Yandere Simulator. It’s your dreams, being ‘lazy’ would only pull you further back so, obviously, that myth has been debunked. Thanks for reading and remember Yandere Dev from the Kubz Scouts is THAT DUDE!

  3. “Does Yandere Simulator need a small town?”
    Short answer: No.
The town is not important to the game, because majority of your time will be spent at the school – a town would be nice in terms of looks, but I think if you were to add one, it would take time away from refining parts of the already established game or would end up in shoddy work that wouldn’t be that great. And what’s the point of having a town, in the long run? I wouldn’t mind having, say, a cutscene of Yandere following Senpai home, but I don’t think you’d need a whole town for that.
My opinion: No town, but great school/home gameplay instead of having a mediocre town that serves little purpose, with mediocre school gameplay.

    “How should Yandere-chan obtain money?”
Allowance. With her parents gone for 10 weeks, I’m sure they left her some money for groceries and such – and, knowing Ryoba and wondering if Yandere may be finding her own lover, I think she would’ve left some extra money on the side “just in case”.

Like I said, I’d rather you focus on getting the school gameplay and everything as close to perfect as possible and not bother adding a town, rather than have two things for ‘depth’ to do things, but both end up rather… meh. A town can be something added later. Like, much, much, much later in the game, when things are closer to being done with the main aspect of the game – the rivals, Senpai, mechanics on the eliminating and everything.

  4. I like the use of 2D minigames to obtain money – it would be an interesting shift in art style, it can be maybe like a game-show! Or even make fun of more anime tropes! I also love the idea of shops, and gaining specific items through there, this would become especially important if yan-chan has stuff she needs to do at home (e.g. torture a mind-slave, prepare for the next day, study?). Also, can yan-chan get extra money from going well in a test? This encourage people trying to up all of their studies, if she fails, e.g. 3 or more, guidence consullor. Just some ideas

  5. I think a menu for a town would be enough, no walking between stores, just like when you pick to go into the basement, you pick what shop you want to go into. Sorry for suggesting things when not asked, I just thought I share it in the smallest case you might find it interesting.

  6. Allowance from her parents will make it, I think. Also, it can be united with other mechanics. Fro example:
    1. If you are late for classes for few times – allowance sum can be smaller next time.
    2. If you are reported for something to teachers/director – allowance sum reduces next time.
    3. If you are having perfect reputation for a week – allowance sum has some bonus (maybe 10%) next time.

  7. I’d go with the “Small Street” Idea, From the model build of the Small Town I saw in the game, where the school is doesn’t exactly match up with the street in front of the school. I also think you should be able to buy Items in town to make things a bit easier. The Idea of sending Info-chan panty shots for all your Weapons and stuff is good, but it would be difficult to get enough of them for what you need. Stores and Money would be able to balance this out.

  8. A good wine does not get produced overnight. The same goes with a good game. It really takes a lot of time so don’t worry about people calling you lazy, and just continue on. What matters most is the end product.

  9. A town would allow more ways to get items for elimination methods and more ways to remove rivals. For example, if there is a town and say it is by a body of water and you sedate a student and are able to lock the box or tie the student up you could choose to drown the student by throwing the box into the water instead of taking them home for torture.

  10. As to the small town – I’m all for “The street only” or “Just other enviroments” option. This way you focus on the things that are really essential for gameplay in the whole town. Such as sabotage mission locations and Sempai’s house. For the sake of gameplay variety.

  11. I believe we should have a small street, while being able to walk around of course, and not in a straight line. We’d be able to do everything we could in a small town, just in a smaller area. The school itself is already pretty giant, and I don’t think a whole town would be necessary. It would only delay the game with something that could replace it with all the same features besides a lot of space to walk. A town wouldn’t be wise, in my opinion, it would just waste time and money. Sadly, the polls don’t seem to agree with me at the moment, as a small town is winning..

    • Poll seems to be a bit missleadin. It should be “Small town”, “Small street”, “Just some enviroments”, “School+home only”. But maybe Yandev plans to do it as next poll.

  12. The allowance method would mean that you’d have to get creative. Think of Long Live the Queen. You can’t do everything due to the limited points you get before something happens. So you have to be careful and budget properly, which goes fairly well with the rest of the YanSim’s mechanics by not giving too much power to the player. You can do X or Y, but not both. You have to properly strategize, otherwise the game will not be easy.

As for a town… or single street… Yes it gives you more potential places to go and do and stuff, but there is a lot of underutilized space on the school campus already. I think that if you find something to do with that space, it won’t get old. You could put forests, or have a school festival in which students set up stands, or something. It doesn’t especially matter so long as you make sure that every inch is useful somehow.

And honestly if Ayano has to follow Senpai on a date with another girl it’s probably too late, given the losing condition is “girl confesses to Senpai.” It doesn’t make sense in the context of the game.

  13. The street idea has merit
I don’t think the entire town is really necessary

Though I also really like the Internet purchases Idea

I think Yandere Chan should have an allowance
I’d like to think her parents didn’t completely leave her alone for 10 weeks without any money for food or anything even if she can fend for herself
And being able to budget the money adds an interesting challenge

  14. Don’t mind me, just adding my 5cents here.
I really enjoy the street idea, it’s more simple and helps add a lot to Yandere Simulator’s final outcome. The idea that you can’t do anything in the shops seems like a good idea and makes it more simple and the more you progress in the game, the more items you can purchase in the stores, also with the part time job, I think a few options of work should be available with a short and sweet 2D mini game to complete them, I believe that’d be a nice touch to the game aside from the story itself. Although I get that the extra dates in game may take more time to complete, it’d be much more impressive to add that feature and have it as that you can eaves drop on the conversations in school to find out what others are doing and where dates are being held. To ease the games development, I think that the date scenes should only be short cutscenes with a series of options that determine how you ruin the date and based on them, the outcome can either have a positive, neutral or negative effect on Ayano, the girl on the date or even Senpai. Another feature I really think that’d be good to add to the street is quests, meeting strangers on the path and helping them with what they need, I can see it being another way to boost your reputation and gain items or money, and how to get people to like you. A few more ideas I suggest thinking about is a train station that takes you to date areas, school or other small places, also a time schedule so that you can only find certain rivals at specific times. Either way, I’m fine with waiting 10 years for this game, I love how much effort you’re putting into it and look forward to the final game in all its glory.

  15. I think that for the first game in the Yandere Simulator series, you should focus on fleshing out the school first and foremost as that is the main area that the game takes place in. While an “open world, anything is possible” sandbox Yandere Sim would be excellent, it’s also improbable that you would finish development of it before a liberal lives in the white house again, if ever.

Let this game be a proof of concept that the idea has mass appeal, make it short but sweet so you’ll be able to ride on the back of it’s popularity to the next installment in the series.

As for buying items and getting money. I think that there should be two main options: allowance from Yandere-chan’s parents based on how well she is doing in school (going to classes, getting good grades, doing homework, etc.) and an option to blackmail teachers, staff, and other students with evidence of their own wrong doings (like finding two teachers making out in the janitor’s closet between classes, or catching another student cheating). The purchases should be made through the internet on an amazon parody site where you have to plan ahead (or pay extra) to get your packages in on time for what you wish to do with it.

Now, you don’t have to listen to any of this, but that is my two cents. Hope it helps you figure out what to do with the game going forward.

  16. Tbh a street sounds like a better compromise. Keep the quality up then and you could even have yandere chan work in the cafe to spy on senpai and to sabotage his dates. It’s one person making the game so we shouldn’t expect grand theft auto or fallout open worlds. Games like Stardew Valley have those simple mini games and they’re really fun.

  17. I vote for a shopping street! But I don’t think it needs everything the Dev suggested. I think the shops would be enough, no need to stalk Senpai there or even have part time jobs. Though it would be interesting to see your schoolmates walking around there. They wouldn’t need to do anything, just walk around and look at the shops. My point is; less is more.

  18. As cool as a small town would be, if it’s gonna eat up so much time, then maybe it would be kinda pointless. Besides, I’m still happy with the idea of having a single street where you can buy things and do part time jobs. And a 2D minigame would be really sweet!

  19. May I suggest that, instead of an open map of a small town or just a street,
you only have some certain locations in town that players can visit.
In that way not only don’t you need to squeeze everything into just one street (I mean, how do you put some place for dumping body into a shop street?), neither do you need to code a lot of thing that an open map of a town would
    require.

  20. – I think a small street is enough.
    – Allowance because you can’t work to get more money, that means the player should administrate better the money. I think it’s cool because it’s challenging.
    – Buy things in stores in small street.
yanderedev posted: “In 2015 and 2016, I asked fans for a lot of feedback, but rarely did I ever make videos acknowledging that feedback or announcing how it would affect the game moving forward. I was planning to make a “Tying Up Loose Ends” video, where I’d finally address “

  21. A single street would be far better than a full town.

You need to keep the density of things to do up. a full town would spread things out to far and make the game seem empty unless you were willing to spend an enormous amount of time filling it.

  22. You could try to do something similar to Sunrider Academy, which has only a townmap. As many people seems to be ok with 2D minigames with jobs and many are ok with street only, thats why I suggest to have map of town from where you can choose where you want to go. You don’t necessarily need to be able to walk around so I think map would be good alternative or then after player has chosen location he/she would be “teleported” to there and then be able to walk around within location. Map could be accessed via computer or smartphone.

Also if you have some suggestions to this idea please tell as i might be able to use them by myself for something.

  23. I advocate for a small town, but it should be pretty small, it would be nice to focus on scenery like parks, or have onsen.
It would show some culture and help to suspend disbelief.

Some people say you cannot finish the game with a small town, but in my opinion it depends on the scope of your ambition.

  24. Don’t have a small town, though I see from the poll that most don’t share this opinion. Do you WANT the game to be released or not? Just have a small street with Ayano’s house, a bunch of stores, and the school at the end. You could still include the bike though.

  25. I think you should prioritize to get the game done. Looks like the game is becoming very complicated and taking years more to complete as it is, so adding more contents, especially large one as a town, may not be the good idea. I fear you might risk that the game becomes out of your hands and never finished. When you finish the development and release the game and earned much money (it definitely would), start development of Yandere Simulator 2 with open world. My opinion.

  26. I love this game so much and i love seeing it develop. All the ideas you have are brilliant new, and exciting for the game and players. I know developing a whole game from scratch is hella hard and ive been here since the beginning, unbelievably excited for everything new.i think the one street would be a great addition to the game and give it some new life.

  27. I don’t think we need a small town for now. Like you said, maybe in Yandere Simulator 2. But not yet. Because it’s a lot too much work for you.
I have a idea for win money without a small town. Yan-chan is very manipulator and intelligent (I think), so she can work on internet. Like, create a blog, lie on her life, receive money from donation.

  28. ya should have the small town it gives a more open feeling to the world ya making also not sure if ya take suggestions but maybe a way to bribe the gangs at the school to ignore ya killing someone and deposing of evidence could be interesting

  29. I think the single street idea is the best! Yeah, a small town would be super fun, but I don’t think it’s necessary at all, and leaving it for the (possible) sequel sounds good, since I think we all want LoveSick to come out sooner rather than later so we can play it, and YanDev can take a proper break!

    • And instand of a railroad, how about a regular road? this way you use all your ideas in a single street (you can also use a railroad, it’s make sence that a shopping street will have a train station
