May Preview #13 (and two polls!)

The next build is still on track for June 1st. The cut-scene that caused the delay is now 100% finished; all that remains is testing for bugs, fixing whatever bugs I find, adding polish, and seeing how many additional features I can add between now and June 1st.

I promised that I would post previews of cool upcoming content for every day that the build continued to be delayed, so here’s another preview:

I’ve always wanted Yandere Simulator to have an original school uniform, instead of using the cliche “Sailor” school uniform, I want the game to have a school uniform that makes you say “Oh! I recognize that! That’s the uniform from Yandere Simulator!”  The above image is a school uniform that I designed by combining aspects of some of my favorite anime school uniforms. This roughly what I want Yandere Simulator’s “official” school uniform to be. (I might still want to make a few tweaks here and there.)

Of course, if I’m a horrible uniform designer and the majority of people think that my design looks ugly, then I would be a fool to use that design. As with most things, I think it would be a good idea to present multiple options to the fanbase and then let the fans vote on Yandere Simulator’s official uniform.

Let’s try a quick test poll right now! What do you think of the uniform featured above?

No matter what the school’s “official” uniform is, a lot of people associate the stereotypical “Sailor” school uniform with Yandere Simulator, and won’t want to use anything else. So, of course, the traditional “Sailor” uniform will be an option in the final game.

By the way, there is something worth mentioning. Yandere-chan’s current character model is a store-bought asset, and this model lacks many of the features that I would want to see in a video game character model (namely, the capacity for an expressive face) and I think that her body proportions are a bit strange, so I plan to eventually replace Yandere Simulator’s current character models with custom-made character models that have way more versatility.

Updating the game’s character models would require at least a month of “downtime” during which no apparent progress is being made on the game. The reason it would require so much time to update the game’s character model is because there are dozens of scripts that are designed to directly access specific parts of the current character model, and ripping out the game’s current character model would break all of those scripts. Also, there’s no guarantee that all of the game’s current animations would be compatible with the “final” character model, which means there is the possibility that the “final” character model can’t even be implemented unless I have a full set of (over 100) animations made specifically for the new character model.

I don’t think that this is the correct time to have a month of “downtime” where no apparent progress is being made on the game. So, the “Aoi” character model will remain in use until after the game’s crowdfunding campaign, which will most likely take place in late 2016 or early 2017.

Because Yandere-chan’s current appearance is very closely associated with Yandere Simulator,  I believe that the protagonist’s final character model should be similar in nature to the current character model. The protagonist’s final character model should have a hairstyle that is very similar to the hairstyle she currently uses. It might look like this, for example:

Similar enough to be an original asset, but close enough to the original that you still recognize the character.

With that said, let me poll you on two things:

How do you feel about the use of store-bought assets in games?

And

How would you feel if Yandere-chan’s character model and hair model were replaced with similar-looking models?

By the way, the hair models and clothing models in this blog post were modeled by Druelbozo. Fun fact: I started working with Druelbozo exactly 365 days ago, on May 27th, 2015!

  1. I think the new uniform’s alright. I mean, personally I don’t really like the whole “under scoop” thing going on (don’t hate me) the only other problem I have with it is the fact that Yandere-chan’s socks clash with the outfit, so I’d think it would be a good idea to either alter her sock color to a light grey or a white, or make the blue of the uniform a little darker.

  2. It not ugly…its just that it doesnt look like a school uniform. Its a bit too plain for a fancy rich school like akedemi high, and i dont know any school who would want their students breast to be, uh, that “prominient”. I mean, you daid you wanted the game to be realistic as possible, but this uniform just looks like some weird fetish maid costume minus the frills.

    • But its not a rich school…plus if the breasts show up thats better because that would explain why Kokona is a slut, it does look like a uniform tho. watch more anime

      • What are you talking about? Akademi IS a rich school, not to mention famous apparently. To quote the Dev from Twitter, “Akademi High School is meant to be a rich, expensive, prestigious private high school.”
And thats a shit excuse for having a provocative school uniform, lmao. The Dev has said before that he wants Yan Sim to be realistic, so do you really think watching more anime for answers is going to help you?

      • Well, yandere dev did mention many times that Akedemi High is a rich school. And anyway, if Yandere Dev wants to be realistic do you really think he would rely on watching anime, let alone ecchi, which most of the time isn’t supposed to be realistic at all, and just have an excuse to put high school girls in provocative uniforms?(not hating on porn or kinkshaming, just saying that I don’t think the uniforms are supposed to be realistic) I don’t know what the uniforms in Japan look like, but no, watching anime will not give me an accurate representation of it.

      • Lol “watch more anime” isn’t the best way to indicate an understanding of what actual school uniforms look like, nor is it a proper way to learn about said realistic uniforms.
Also YanDev mentions in one of his videos (I think the one about bathing) that Akademi High is very rich.

  3. I am in-love with the new uniform and the new hair. I think it would be perfect for Yandere Simulator. And (UNPOPULAR OPINION ALERT – STAND BACK) I don’t really like sailor uniforms in general. They are way overused and overrated.

  4. The uniform would look more like a prestigious school uniform if the underbust was simply a nice vest that covered her breasts. I can’t imagine any school requirig students to wear someinthing that draws so much attention to one’s boobs, especially since most dress codes require shoulders to be covered. I’m sure the underbust was to give of a sexy flare to attract guys to the game, but a plain vest would be the right meduim between sorta sexy (especially if the player chose to give Ayano bigger boobs) but modest enough for us female players to not feel usulted by her boobs beieng the focal point of the uniform. You could also add a tie with the vest to further the prestigious uniform look along with collar acessories and pins or buttons on the vest to further character distinguishablity or character customization

  5. I adore the new uniform design along with the hair, they’re both wonderful~! 😀
I do believe it would be a good idea to add a custom model for Yan-chan, but perhaps after you’ve already finished about 75-80% of the game. It may take longer custom-animations wise, but, you’ll have less to go back to. Not to mention you’ll have most of the in-game features already finished/near completion. I’m VERY excited to see that the game is coming along well, I will DEFINITELY be buying this game come it’s official release. I shall be waiting patiently for the next build. Keep up the wonderful work~! 😀

P.S: Thank you for inspiring me to become a graphic designer and a game developer myself. I’ve been a gamer since a very young age, and your dedication to work on Yandere Simulator for so long has made me more determined than ever to try my hand at this sort of thing. 🙂

  6. I absolutely love the new uniform, the colors and its shape are very nice, the only problem with it I have are her socks cuz’ they don’t match the rest of the outfit at all – but I hope we will get the option to change colors of it? Like Druelbozo posted on his Da (I like the black one tho) 😛 And the new hairstyle’s neat too – I’ve personally always kinda disliked the store-bought hairstyles and I think it’s a good decision to change the models a bit ❤
    Have a good one~~

  7. I like the uniform in my opinion and the hair but the only thing that bothers me is that the socks don’t really match up with the uniform and maybe it would look better if it was white?

  8. The one thing I dislike about the uniform is how it emphasizes the female student’s boobs. For big-breasted students like Kokona and Saki, their boobs are practically going to be spilling out of the front, and I dont think their school faculty wants everyone’s attention to go straight to their student’s chests lol. What does the male version of this uniform look like?
If you do end up using this uniform, I wont be that bothered though. I think it’s pretty cute, all things considered.

  9. The new hairstyle is good, but I allways imagined a ponytail that has 3 different meshes; so those can have more jigglebones and it should look better. Not just 1 mesh for 1 part of the ponytail.

  10. Why not have a contest where fans can send in school uniform designs and whichever one is best you use for yandere-chan? It’d help the fanbase feel involved and you could get a whole bunch of fanart. Win-win, right?

  11. Remember you video “August 1st Build Delayed” ? Yeah, go to 0:36-0:38 …the third one from the left would be perfect for yandere simulator’s new character model 😀 in my opinion

  12. Well i didn’t like the boobs place design please change it. And if you really really want the blue on the uniform you can change the socks color to light gray or white? That will be more beautiful.
And the hair is so wonderful i like it.
I am So excited for the next build~~~☆
    Fighting.

  13. I think the colour pallet is OK, but the underscoop below the breasts makes me feel like Yan-chan is working at some sort of raunchy cosplay cafe. It would seem very obvious that the school were trying to sexualise the girls’ uniforms, because the straps make the breasts look bigger. I think a fancy school like Akademi High should have a jumper, the same sailor scarf and a blazer. The skirt design is fine though, although you could have the creases only on part of the skirt, like Leaf’s(Pokémon FireRed and Leafgreen)

You should defo use the new hairstyle. I love it. Not much more can be said there, but the jacket/waistcoat thing (no offence) was a bit of a fashion faux pas. You should probably create a new one and tone down the blues down. Try using a v-neckline.

  14. The biggest thing this uniform is missing is embellishments like buttons. Otherwise, it’s not the best, but not terrible.

If he likes the suspenders design, it might be worth his while to consider a skirt that starts at the waist. However, he would then need separate uniforms with modified strap placements depending on how big the girls’ breasts are.

  15. It looks way too similar to the School Days uniform (just in a lighter tone). I like the original idea of the uniform from the early design from Yandere-chan but maybe instead of brown and red it can be done on blue to be similar to the sailor suit used until now.

  16. The uniform its okay but…with all the cool stuff that you have created for Yandere Simulator im sure you can create a better uniform :). For Example: You can make a mixture of differents Popular yanderes girls´s uniforms for Yandere-chan´s uniform.

  17. I don’t really have much of a problem with it, but the breast thing makes me a bit uncomfortable. I think raising it up a bit to cover them, like half-way, would be better. I also think that changing the color of it to a darker color would be better.

  18. So I actually quite like the new hairstyle, it feels very reminiscent and familiar to the old haircut, but still new, updated, and more complex.

But the uniform… not so much. It has the problem of too many colors really. Red and blue, red and white, red and black can all go together. Same with the blue. Things get a bit dicier once you add a third color to the mix, but hey, red white and blue is classic colors and makes one PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN *ahem*. But once you throw black into the mix? Red, white, blue, and black just gets cluttered and jumbled, no real color theme. Of the Druelbozo’s recolors, the pinkish red one and the black address this. I kind of like the brown one better too, same number of colors, but yellow and brown are less dramatically in opposition to each other, and the more creme colored shirt helps pull everything together in some kind of unity.

Now, onto the infamous boob cut out. More than being sleazy looking, I think I’d point out that the the uniform just wouldn’t look flattering on a wide variety of women. This type of dress does draw a lot of emphasis to the chest, which can be fine, but for the flat-chested girls this has the reverse effect and draws emphasis to the lack of distinct boobs, whereas a girl with particularly large breasts will have them even more dramatically emphasized to a potentially almost cartoonish level. I think this is actually also where some of the recolors of Druelbozo’s work help shine through, due to the less sharp color contrasts, the emphasis on the breasts is lessened, making it less patently obvious, as say the largely black recoloring uses a grey shirt too, making the contrast present but less blatantly attention grabbing. So I would indeed favor and vote for recoloring, moving the straps, or changing this to some kind of vest, possibly combining this options to some effect.

I would also recommend adding the buttons in the recolors Druelbozo has, they do add another visual element that makes the overall outfit more complex and pleasing to the eye. It’s not a patently bad design, but it just has too many rough elements that don’t mesh well together.

    • to me, the boob thing doesn’t bother me at all,
I think small-chested girls would just opt to not wear the little vest thing, so it would just be a button-up shirt. large-chested girls might wear a jacket or cardigan instead of the boob-vest thing.

  19. Didn’t Yandere dev say he wanted the game to be realistic? (Ignoring the murdering part of the game) Looking at anime as a reference for fashion in Japan isn’t going to turn out well in the long run. Looking at anime for some ideas is alright, but Japan is a very modest society appearance wise compared to the hyper sexual anime industry. They would never actually make a uniform that made you look at the breasts of an underage girl outside of anime. Of course, individual students can modify their uniforms to an extent, but not to the point in the picture that we were given. Yandere simulater has so much more potential then this, and I feel like he isn’t letting it grow in a way that is totally possible for the game because he is stuck in the false world that anime creates. Japan is so much more then the otaku culture anime gives us than what we actually see.

  20. I love the hair model! I think the uniform looks great, aside from a few small tweaks. The breast area part doesn’t bother me at all, I would love to have different colored versions of the uniform though 🙂 Druelbozo’s work truly is amazing.
