FAQ Update, Mini-Bug-Fix Builds, and E-mail Follow-Up

This blog post was updated on April 4th at 3:25 AM.

The FAQ has been updated again to answer the most frequently-asked questions from the month of March! If you have burning questions about things that were added or revealed within the past month, you might want to check it out!

Mini-Bug-Fix Build 1

I’ve also uploaded a new build of the game to fix a big, embarrassing issue from the previous build – students kept on getting stuck on the walls, which prevented a lot of events from occurring. I didn’t change very much in this build, since the primary reason for releasing it is to quickly fix one major bug, but here’s a full list of the changes:

  • (Hopefully) Fixed bug that was causing students to get stuck on pillars while walking near walls.
  • Added new phone artwork for the pause screen and cut-scene where Yandere-chan meets Info-chan.
  • Changed pause screen menu so that it uses a grid of phone icons instead of using a text menu.
  • Fixed bug that caused a whistle to appear around girls’ necks in their Student Info portraits.
  • Fixed camera-clipping issue near the bulletin boards that display club posters.

Mini-Bug-Fix Build 2

Oops! It became necessary to upload a second mini-bug-fix build, after the discovery of yet another problem that caused students to become stuck on props while walking through hallways. Darn! Here are the latest fixes:

  • Fixed bug that would cause students to get stuck on the cardbox box / desks in one of the hallways on the third floor.
  • Fixed bug that would cause the camera to get stuck if the player pulled out their smartphone camera as a delinquent was approaching.
  • Fixed bug that would cause the button prompt icons in the basement to not leave the screen when Yandere-chan walked near them.
  • Fixed bug that would allow the player to escape a delinquent by laughing as the delinquent was approaching.
  • Added support for 4:3, 5:4, and 16:10 monitors. Let me know if it doesn’t work.

E-mail Follow-Up

Yikes! Yesterday’s 20-minute video received an extremely strong negative reaction. I’m seeing a flood of negative feedback on YouTube, Twitter, Tumblr, Reddit, Patreon, this blog, and everywhere else. I’d like to clarify a number of things.

Do you really answer e-mails 8~12 hours every single day? “8~12 hours” is an absolute worst-case scenario that usually doesn’t happen more than once or twice per month. In an average day, it’s usually just 4~6 hours.

Do you really spend hours reading stupid e-mails? As I mentioned in my video, the majority of the time I spend on e-mails (I didn’t name an exact number, but it’s around 3~5 hours every day) is spent communicating with volunteers. Handing out screening tasks to the new volunteers, gathering reference material whenever I have a request, reviewing and critiquing work, etc. I don’t actually read stupid e-mails for hours at a time, but I do have to click past 5~10 stupid ones between each important e-mail with a volunteer, which is my greatest source of annoyance and frustration.

Why not use a filter? I already do. I use multiple filters that do an excellent job of filtering bug reports and fan art into the proper folders. However, it’s not very easy to create a filter that puts all volunteer e-mail into a single folder, because my volunteers don’t all use one consistent format when writing the subjects of of their e-mails, even though I ask them to. Filters are helpful, but they have a huge margin of error. Filters are not a magical silver bullet that solves all of my problems.

Can’t you instantly tell the difference between a useful e-mail and a stupid e-mail just from looking at the subject? No. Many volunteers use frustratingly vague subjects for their e-mails, and many non-volunteers choose to write misleading subjects for their e-mails in order to make me click their message.

Do you respond to every single e-mail? No. I usually read the first sentence, decide whether or not if it’s a stupid e-mail, and then respond or move on.

Why not use Skype or use a forum? This doesn’t fix the underlying problem. It simply moves the problem elsewhere.

Why not just ignore your e-mail? Because I need it to communicate with the volunteers. It’s absolutely essential.

Why not just… Whatever you’re about to suggest, there’s a reason why it wouldn’t work.

The strong negative reactions I’ve been reading all over the Internet today have been very disheartening. On top of that, today I received 350 more e-mails than I usually do…

However, on a surprising twist of fate, 90% of those e-mails were from people who wanted to send me encouraging words! Hundreds of e-mails from people who all want to cheer me on…it’s incredibly heartwarming to receive so much support! I’m so grateful for everyone’s kind words!

With that said, there’s actually so much love that it’s actually counterproductive, because my e-mail inbox is now overflowing with fan mail. You guys are super nice and sweet and kind, and I’m happy that you’re trying to cheer me up…but please, remember, the biggest favor you can possible do for me…is to not e-mail me!

Dating Sim Files

Yesterday, I stated that I was going to publicly release some files that were created for a April Fools’ “dating sim game” prank so that the community could put it together if they were interested. However, shortly after posting my previous blog post, an experienced visual novel developer contacted me and expressed a desire to make the dating sim for me. I’ve decided to send them the assets so that they can create the dating sim. If they complete the project, I’ll post it here. If they don’t complete the project, I’ll publicly release the files, as originally planned.

  1. “However, shortly after posting my previous blog post, an experienced visual novel developer contacted me and expressed a desire to make the dating sim for me. Dammit! I was looking forward to giving it a shot. I hope that person flakes out…uh…I mean, I hope the dating sim comes out great!

  2. What does the “drop” icon do? When you go to “Favors” on the phone, go to drops and doesn’t do anything but move the thing on the bottom that says choose.

  3. another hair bug that i found if you do the mindslave in your room with “K” and this time with a step by step/how to do it.

  4. I don’t want to email this to Yanderedev and risk on getting him angry. But, I really think he should get a secretary. He says he feels the need to “babysit” them. He should do this: tell them what kind of important e-mails they should look for. Then, say specifically what the e-mail should contain (like a bug report needing repro-steps). Yanderedev sounds so selfish when he says he doesn’t want to babysit a secretary. And using the word ‘babysit’ makes it sound like as though he will treat them like a child. At least, that’s what I think.

    • Good point. I actually was considering trying to bring that up to him a while ago, I’m more than happy to help, but of course.. That’d be wasting his time and I refuse to do such.

    • This is exactly what the community has been saying for a while now. But YandereDev is so austistic and stubborn he will never admit it though. LOL at the impersonator cuddling up w/YandereDev.

    • Pffff you know how hard is to find someone that makes a good job? Also remember that he doesn’t want to hire a secretary ’cause he is afraid that she told to fans spoilers. (I don’t speak english,i’m sorry if I writte something wrong )

    • I think you need to shut your greedy little keyboard. EVERYTHING that people have suggested, he knows and has found a reason NOT to do it. I see Corkiedog1 on this blog a lot and she is the rudest person on this planet. Says she’s YandereDev’s “secret secretary” but I doubt he would let such a jerk that CALLS HIM AUTISTIC do that. Now, leave, Corkiedog and your “corks.” (Which is just you writing support to yourself.)

      • If you have read ANY of Corkiedog1’s posts and the replies, you would understand that there’s an impersonator who uses his/her name to say negative things.

    • The thing is though, with a secretary, that this is person who eventually will be placed in a situation with spoilers.
There is nothing stopping them from telling someone, online or not.
If they tell someone, that person might tell someone, and that person might tell someone…
      And everything is officially leaked.

  5. Why doesn’t Yandere Dev use multiple emails? I think for newcomers to come and the first thing they see is “DONT SEND ME STUPID EMAILS!!!” may alienate them. And even for people who have been here since forever. I’ve wanted to volunteer with artwork or music but I haven’t sent him one email because I feel like he’ll rip my face off.

It’s like, you can’t stop it from raining, so you prepare with a raincoat and umbrella. Begging to the skies to make it stop won’t do anything but get you soaked.

    • More emails means more time devoted to emails. Newcomers should understand he is a busy man developing and shouldn’t send him stupid crap. They need to get over the fact they cannot chat with the developer and instead need to leave him alone. Artwork and music is very much appreciated though! He is actually really really sweet when you send him something along those lines. I’ve sent him fanart and he was still very kind toward me. He isn’t how we makes himself out to be.

      • It means sorting e-mails, actually, so YandereDev can read the topic he wants. The same amount of e-mails would still be there. He could make a suggestion/question e-mail that he never has to read and use it as a stupid sponge.

    • You have a really good comment, Summer. Pay no attention to the fucking idiot Corkiedog1, she’s so far up YandereDev’s ass.

    • He has specifically addressed this in his recent video about e-mails. Yandere Dev has pointed out that swapping Inboxes uses his time, even if it is just a little bit, this will compound into lots of wasted time. He shouldn’t have to. People will also likely email the wrong email address. AND, if he doesn’t use that e-mail, it will likely be obvious, so some fans (who feel like they can contribute) will just email him in the email box he reads. There’s also the problems in the categories he does read. There are volunteers who email that have never done anything close to what he is looking for. Bug reporters also report bugs without following criteria and without checking the KNOWN BUGS page. They also report crashes and issues that are their computer’s fault, not the game’s.

    • I’m gonna assume you mean two emails as in “One for bug reports and fan works and what not” and “The other one for volunteers”.
How would any new volunteers contact him if the email devoted to volunteers is private.
If he posts it here, then dumb people will just spam him their.
Having two emails is just moving the problem somewhere else

  6. @ValyXD
but he dos fix those bugs, sometimes u read on a new update that he fixes bugs on a “broken mindslave” and this is a “broken mindslave” not one i had from the normal way.

  7. It’s stupid people got upset about that. If they got upset it’s their fault for sending the stupid E-mails. Personally I believe he did nothing wrong but state the obvious.

      • He has received 18 400 emails about the game over the two years, meaning that every day, he has gotten the average of
18 400 / (365+366) = 25,17 emails per day. How can he possibly spend so much time on the stupid emails? #mysteries
You probably think I’m a hater and that is false.

    • That’s not the only reason to be annoyed by the video. I haven’t sent the man a single email, but I’m still irritated, because I think videos like these reflect poorly on his project management skills. I want the game to succeed, and he’s risking its success by being stubborn and unwilling to delegate.

  8. Sometimes receiving negative feedback it’s a good thing, because it shows that people cares for you and your project.
I’ve seen a lot of people here yesterday giving you good criticism, but it doesn’t seem like you’ve been listening at all.

There actually are a few over thirty years old people who follow the development of this game, like myself, and those people are likely to have a job themselves and a better understanding of the kind of organization that is needed in a work enviroment.
Sure, anyone can’t truly understand any other job, or situation, until they experiences it themselves, but this doesn’t mean their opinion doesn’t hold any ground.

I’m sorry, but you are handling this very poorly. You are having a bad time (pun not intended) solving the problem yourself, but don’t want any help from other people, and keep putting out videos complaining about who send you stupid emails, even though it’s clear that they’re not going to stop.
This isn’t mature nor professional. Find. A. Solution. Don’t you want any help? It’s cool, it’s your job, it’s you that knows what it’s going on and what do you need, but if you can’t find the perfect solution you need to either compromise or get used to it. Or snap.

Seriously, for your own sake, DO SOMETHING about all this.

    • I’ve been telling Dev this for months now, but he just won’t listen to reason. I can bring it up to him again though.

    • Complaining about people sending him stupid e-mails is his way of doing something with it 😛
Like, he probably hopes that people will understand what kind of e-mails he doesn’t want, and stop sending them, or something.

As for feedback, he has specifically said not to try and communicate with him through the blog, but rather send him an e-mail. So if he hasn’t responded to something in the comments here, it’s most likely because he hasn’t seen it

    • We cannot tell him how to make HIS game, if he felt a secretary would help he’d get one. Since he is only person replying to emails, he doesn’t have one. It isn’t like he has not provided the resources to fix his problem, some people just don’t use them.
      1. Questions: Check the FAQs, ask the other fans, and/or wait for him to release that information (If he hasn’t told the fans, it’s for a good reason.
      2. Bug Reports: Follow the GUIDELINES he gives in the Bug Reporting Section.
      3. Suggestions: Just don’t.
      4. Volunteers: FOLLOW THE GUIDELINES.

You see… he has given us what he wants. Just listen to him.

    • I agree, For one thing he should have a hidden email for volunteers if he doesn’t already It is dumb not to as it puts all your most important emails in one place.
If he doesn’t what help filtering he could create a reply bot for every email that is not volunteers (another reason to have that other hidden email) Thanking for supporting the game and giving important links to “FAQ, how to report a bug, known bugs, the video he just made on what to email, anything else important” Not a direct fix it is an over time filter that over time will help filter the dumb. Also meaning that he doesn’t have to reply to anything but volunteer emails.
There are other options too each would have a different issue.

  9. i retested the hair color bug, but now with the normal way. (not with the mindslave u get with pressing “K” in your room)

    • Once again, don’t spam and fill up the blog with your personal YouTube videos… this isn’t your personal platform for that. Email it to YandereDev and be done with it. Don’t be an attention whore.

    • I think that this might actually be a test for a feature Yandere Dev had mentioned earlier. A while ago, he said that he might implement a feature where students that have been tortured enough get Marie Antoinette syndrome. Marie Antoinette syndrome is a condition where somebody who has been horribly traumatized gets white hair. Pressing K with a kidnapped student might just be a test for this feature.

    • did YOU just compared me with Kubz Scouts??? WAAW! lmao! thanks! give him my thanks! and tell him hes THAT DUDE!
but really? looks likes “Fuckwad kids” Reply is treu about you.

      • Hi!
I’m your average fucked up wannabe secretary that tries to convince people that I’m his official secretary!
I also use the excuse that he keeps my job/affiliations with him a secret!

    • People are allowed to try imo. How do you think Jay started? Do you think he had 100000 subs from the beginning? He worked hard to get them, and that’s what people are trying to do, go with the flow, like when everyone played FNaF when it was popular just to make their channels bigger.

      • OMG WHAT DID YOU SAY YOU FAKUR I AM TEH REALZ CORKIEDOGGIE1 becasus I am YANDERU DAVES OFFICIAL SECRETARY/LOLLY SEX DOLLL NOTICE ME YANDERTE DEV PLS OR ILL KEEP GIVING INACCURATE ADVICE ANDBULLI OTHERS

      • Oh my fucking god I practically choked on laughter.

Have I become something powerful? Hey other Corkies. Name one disorder the real Corkie suffers from. We shall know who is the real one.

  10. Honestly, Yanderedev should use multiple emails. IE he should take a majority of the emails at his current one, but should have a second more private/secret one for people he’s working with directly to communicate through. That way he wouldn’t have to sift through lesser emails to get down to business.

    • He’s already said no to this because he would lose time logging in and out of accounts. Do you have a brain and ears?

      • Well honestly I haven’t been keeping up with the game very much, but the easy solution is to use multiple browsers. Stay logged into one account on firefox and stay logged into another on chrome.

      • His e-mail service allows access to multiple addresses on one account. What he said in the video is no excuse.

    • People probably won’t listen to his guidelines. The reason his email is open to the public is because he needs lots of QUALIFIED volunteers and a private email doesn’t help that. I will admit maybe if was done right, it would work but I think it would take more effort.

      • It’s actually just like this:
Can’t you instantly tell the difference between a useful e-mail and a stupid e-mail just from looking at the subject? No. Many volunteers use frustratingly vague subjects for their e-mails, and MANY NON-VOLUNTEERS CHOOSE TO WRITE MISLEADING SUBJECTS FOR THEIR E-MAILS IN ORDER TO MAKE ME CLICK THEIR MESSAGE.
It’s EXACTLY like this. Someone said earlier that Yandere Dev has before Senpai, and everyone wants him to notice them.

    • You don’t know how to read or what? Are you stupid? It won’t help in anything, he already explained that but you can’t understand that! You are an asshole!

    • Wouldn’t he just get spammed all the time on both accounts?
      That makes the problem worse.
He can’t just keep one private cuz new volunteers that could actually help the game wouldn’t be able to contact him.
      soooooooo……..

      • Hmm? I’m basically saying everything should stay how it currently is, but the people he actually works with and knows are ‘good/legit’ volunteers should email him at a different account that won’t be bombarded with spam and other useless messages. That way he can quickly reply to the important emails before spending a couple hours each day or however long it takes to sift through the current main email where everything else is fielded.

Having things consolidated in that fashion would probably be preferable and make for a better flow of fielding questions and answers regarding important work like asset creation.

And in regards to multiple emails and having to log in and out, I propose he simply have two web browsers open. Log into each one with a separate email account.

  11. Someone just save this man. He already has a lot of stress in his head and the people who are being impersonators, sulking about what he said, and just being plain immature about the whole thing is making it even worse for him! Was he immature himself for making that video? Only a small bit but he had to make a poin . You have to understand that he is one man people. He has to do all of this everyday to try to please a lot of people who are looking forward to this game. The more you blatantly be immature, the more it will stress him out. He simply has no time to deal with any of you acting immature and selfish about what he said. Please understand that since I keep reading these comments and they’re more cringey than the last. He is only speaking the truth and wants to continue working on his game. Please people who are acting like little kids on this thread just grow up. You all could do better than this.

  12. Does anyone know what social media YandereDev most likely go for fanarts?
I’d like to make some for him, but without having to email him directly (I imagined the amount of fanart emails would multiplicate after the video)

  13. I love this game and Yanderedev, but I don’t think he can avoid hiring a secretary for much longer, especially if the project grows more popular with time (which I think it will). His stubborn refusal to do this definitely shows his perfectionism, which can good and bad. I mean, if he did hire a secretary, I imagine he would be just as perfectionist in finding one as he would be in making the game, which would lower the risk of the things he worries about considerably.

I just don’t see this problem going away, and I don’t see him planning to do anything that will actually alleviate it.

    I’m worried about him!

    • Bless the secretary who can pull it off. He honestly sounds kind of intolerable to work for in that capacity. I mean, he talks about “babysitting” the secretary. Secretaries are professionals, not children. I expect that even if he did give in and get one, he’d be breathing down their neck constantly.

  14. Yandere dev
To speed up your development on Yandere Simulator you can go to steam and contact them they will help you and the steam community is great and millions of people play their and the creater will help and give you both the monet but split because your using his community and if I wasted your time I’m sorry I saw you email video at youtube you were very pasific with your words and if thus helps your welcome I know this email is long but o need to put a lot of detail on this do you understand what im trying to say and good luck on Yandere Simulator your doing great I’m excited about the future of Yandere Simulator.

    • …I don’t want to pick on little kids—I mean, we were all nine once, but I’m so tempted.

Really though, how did this game get so many fans under the age of thirteen? (I’m twenty-three and trying to keep an open mind but part of me wants to ask where their parents are.

…Then again, I was doing worse online at eleven, so I have no grounds to judge…

      • The popular youtubers who are playing this game have mostly children as fans. I don’t think the Dev was anticipating that when he started releasing debugs.

  15. After that video, I was worried about Yanderedev too (to the point where it affected how I felt during the day). I’m glad to see others were concerned about him too.

  16. Guys I think a person has copyrighted the art in the email problem video? its on this post http://littlephilosaur.tumblr.com/post/142254700784/i-drew-danisnotonfire-and-amazingphil-in-an i’m not 100% that this is the artist who did the art for that video but I strongly believe this person copied it. I want to email Yandere Dev about this but i’m not sure if I should after seeing the video just in case this isn’t relevant. I’m sorry if i’m wrong but I just thought this was very similar to the art in the email video. I hope Yandere Dev sees this so he can clear this up. Thanks!

      • I know but I think the person copied the basic template thats what im saying, like they traced it or something

    • As an artist I think the same, it’s obviously copied and if you compared his others works the style is very different
Once you post something on the Internet it’s not your anymore *sigh, stupid thiefs*
If you send an Email to YandereDev, i think he would be greatfull and will at least give the information to the original artist (i can’t find her/him on the yandere wikia) even if he can’t do anything about it, it’s important to the original owner to know this information
But use a clear title like “VIDEOS’S ARTWORK STEAL” with the link and ask for at least a tranfert to the original artist
Tell us if you have send anything
      (sorry for the bad english)

    • littlephilosaur have give a link to the video but didn’t credit well the artist
I had sent the informations to hanapiano you don’t have to send any email to yanderedev now 🙂

    • idk, it’s just from a small blog. I believe if the owner used the video, he/she just used the poses as a reference. I wouldnt consider it stealing…plus, the art is pretty diferent.

  17. YandereDev, the suport for my 5:3 monitor does not work that well…
I mean in the main menu is very okay but once i start the day and i go to school some white bars start to appear.
Also, the white bars are little bit blurry, like how the screen brightens when i go from house to school.
Before i’ve selected my aspect ratio instead of the white bars i was having black bars and i knew those are because of my monitor.

  18. Guys, I have an idea!
What do you think about creating a single video with cheering our YandereDev-senpai? Like, everyone records a bit, and then some very skilled person who will be remembered eternally for their help will make a single video out of it. It shouldn’t take a lot of YandereDev’s time to see this video.

  19. “Why not just… Whatever you’re about to suggest, there’s a reason why it wouldn’t work.”

This is incredibly pretentious and most likely false, especially given that your latest video about this revealed you don’t know how to put multiple email addresses on one account.

You’re not Phil Fish, but you’re starting to come close.

    • I believe what he means is that it is not about there not existing suggestions and ideas to solve the issue… He is just saying that, from the people following the game’s development, nobody can suggest anything good or new, which would be more accurate than pretentious. Just look at this selfsame blog: no new ideas at all. And I also looked at YouTube comments’ suggestions; same, nothing new.

You need more than just a fan to be able to think of solutions for heavy game development-related issues. If it was that easy for just any random to come up with it, YandereDev himself would have thought of it first, being on the receiving end of all the bad consequences.

And the Phil Fish comparison is definitely exaggerated. At least YandereDev recognized that he is not the same nice guy he once used to be… He is aware he is being somewhat selfish and pretentious, but can you blame him..? If the comments on this blog and on YouTube are just HALF as stupid and repeated as the e-mails he receives daily, then any of us would end up the same.

      • The excuses he provides as to why he doesn’t do certain things (particularly getting a github, stricter filters, and alternate emails under one account) range from inadequate to outright absurd. People with more experience than him have called him out on this multiple times, and he refuses to listen under the pretense that “he’s heard it all before”. The only solution he will accept – a total halt to (or even slowing of) emails he’s not interested in – is completely out of touch with the reality that those emails are coming from children who think they’re special and don’t care about rules.

Being a game developer does not make someone a good manager. YandereDev is an absolutely horrible one, and yet he refuses to listen to people who know better.

(As an aside: the “outright absurd” excuses I mentioned earlier all appear to arise from unhealthy levels of paranoia and perfectionism. Given how much attention from immature fans he gets, the game will NEVER be finished until he gets help for this. I say this as someone who was once in a similar position.)

      • Finally someone who gets it…..
He literally recognizes that he is going kind of insane. Can you imagine if you received 100 emails in one day that all said pretty much the same thing. I’d go insane too.

      • Astigmatism: that was a joke. Also, I get that his current system is stressing him out, but I have no sympathy for him knowing that other indie devs have faced exactly the same problem, and that he refuses to even try what worked for them for no better reasons than willful ignorance and levels of perfectionism that suggest pre-existing mental illness. (No, I don’t say that last part as an insult.)

      • Its about time I actually see a comment section thats not just people eating all the excuses Yanderedev puts out like hes some god who can do no wrong. That being said– I still legitimately do not see the issue with a forum purely because -litterally every other indiedev has done it-

Starbound had one before they *even kickstarted*. And it worked. It was constantly barraged with complaints about Tiy & Friends taking too long after a point, but with a game like this that comes out with a debug build every now and again, I do not see those specific complaints. And *yes* a forum is hard work, and its no 1-person job with a fanbase like this.. But if you can get 10% of your fans to make a good portion of the assets for you, Im sure it will be possible to find some people responsible enough to handle the forum.

Hell, Im almost tempted to ask somone to make a well-designed, un-official forum and show it to Yanderedev at some point so as to mitigate alot of the nonsense he has to deal with.

      • anhitamoonfire: YanDev has implied several times that he doesn’t trust anyone but himself in any sort of management position related to the game.

This will be the end of him if he doesn’t change his mind, as several more experienced devs have already told him, but he’s not listening.

    • what do you mean “multiple emails”
Wouldn’t that multiply the issue? People would spam all of his emails. he can’t keep one hidden, cuz how would he receive any new volunteers.
People are idiots like that :/

      • This perspective assumes that the people sending him stuff he doesn’t want to receive are malicious spammers. They’re not – they’re kids who think they’re special and don’t watch YanDev’s videos or read this blog. (In any case, if anyone did send copies of garbage to every address, he could mark them as a spammer on one address and automatically have their messages to his other addresses removed.)

  20. If a volunteer is not able to pick an appropriate email topic, they shouldn’t be volunteering in the first place.

    • IKR? This is a poor excuse. Why not just get volunteers to tag their posts with a highly specific codeword that will always be filtered properly? It’s a simple solution but Dev acts like because something isn’t 100% foolproof, it isn’t worth trying at all.

      • You are assuming he has not tried that though.

Also, the problem with the codeword is that if he has 5 volunteers, and 4 of them remember to use the codeword, he will still either have to go through all his emails to find the assets from volunteer #5, or waste time emailing and waiting for the assets from #5 to get re-emailed. If there is a new volunteer he has never worked with trying to email him, they will not know the code word and not be able to get screened.

He could simply ignore volunteers unless they formatted their email subject correctly, but tbh if I was a dumb bratty kid who wanted to bug YanDev, I would format my email like that so that he thinks I am a volunteer, clicks on it, and sees my email. So searching by a particular type of format wouldn’t work either, because real volunteers that are truly talented may forget/ignore/not know about the subject formatting, and YanDev would miss amazing opportunities to work with them. Likewise, non-volunteers could use that format and waste his time.

      • Airyu, if he simply posted the codeword on his FAQ or made a new page about proper etiquette for contacting him, then he’d avoid the trouble of even getting volunteers who can’t follow simple instructions. Plus, yes, some people are going to abuse the codeword, but I think the majority of emails that are a problem for him don’t even read his website beyond getting his email, so I still think the vast majority of problematic emails would be filtered out.

  21. USE. A. BUG TRACKER.

It’s common sense when developing a project of this scale which you’re willingly throwing to the public to test. It’s NOT going to be a hassle. Even if it takes you 5 hours to set up, you’re saving 5 * infinity hours of your future, meaning YanSim won’t come out when you’re 54 years old. The longer you spend developing this game, the more broken and outdated your code is going to get. I don’t forsee YanSim ever being released, at this rate.

    • Bugs don’t take the majority of his time. Reading and responding to e-mails does. A bug tracker would solve only a small fraction of the problem.

I’m sure he’ll have a proper bug tracker up when the game is in a more finished state and every bug wouldn’t have 30 duplicates.

      • I think what Joey meant was that setting up a bug tracker would allow him to be more stringent with his e-mail filtering by reducing the number of things he’d have to account for.

That said, I agree that this would just create a mess with the game and fanbase in their current states.

  22. I believe that the main problem about the e-mails situation is simply that YandereDev has become senpai, and everyone wants him to notice them. Seriously, What’s wrong with these people that it’s so hard NOT to send him stupid crap?
Seriously, the FAQ has got OVER 20 PAGES just to try to prevent that from happening, and yet you still manage to.
To all who send e-mails, thank you for ruining the development of Yandere Simulator

  23. Wouldn’t using skype make communicating with volunteers easier? You would only add people you were already working with of course, but then on skype you would only be talking to those contacts, without spam everywhere, and you would know exactly who everyone is. I don’t see any downsides to using skype or something similar to communicate with volunteers. Of course you’d still need email to meet and screen volunteers, as well as bug reports/fanart etc, but using skype as primary communication after deciding to work with sounds like it would be useful.

  24. “Why not just… Whatever you’re about to suggest, there’s a reason why it wouldn’t work.”
Whatever you’re rejecting out of hand, there are also reasons it has to work. You believe you’re blaming the obvious source, the people emailing you, but you’re going to have to suck it up as something that comes with the territory and learn how to manage it. Observe other independent developers! The volume of oxygen you’ve expended over an operational detail that shouldn’t derail development is getting absurd!

  25. The only people who have any thing bad to say about Dev’s frustrations at stupid email are clearly to young or too dumb to have any kind of capacity for rational thought. At least he tries to connect with his fanbase, i really hope he just ignores the negative comments, the last thing we want is for him to just give up on yandere sim out of spite.

    • How many times do I have to say this?

His problem is in no way unique, and he refuses to listen even to people who have solved it for themselves. He has his mind set on a solution that will never happen (because children on the Internet have no concept of rules), and he rejects everything else with flimsy excuses that – again – more experienced developers, businesspeople, etc. have tried to tell him are such.

I don’t want him to give up, either, but he needs to stop being like this if he ever wants to finish the game. The problem will only continue to get worse until he takes an approach that doesn’t rely on children listening to him (which they never, ever will).

      • YanDev’s reason not to set up multiple addresses doesn’t hold water because mail.com allows users to connect multiple addresses to one account. He could set up separate addresses for volunteering, fan works, business inquiries, and bug reports, and then stop checking his original address – the only real argument against this that I can think of is the possibility that it might make sorting through past volunteer emails more difficult.

But that’s not my main suggestion – I just wanted to get that out there. What I actually suggest is adding two more filters: one to “whitelist” volunteers he’s already working with, and another to automatically delete all incoming emails from people not on that whitelist containing words like “suggestion” that never show up in stuff he wants to receive. (A third to delete ones not in his desired title format is optional; if people, even professional volunteers, can’t follow simple instructions, that’s on them, not him.)

I admit that this suggestion is coming from a guy with considerable experience in data analysis and algorithms, but not in game development or business. A common comment by people who do have this experience is that he’s not going to survive without a secretary, and that his reservations about hiring one reflect a mental illness (perfectionism) that he needs to address if the game is ever to be finished. As a fellow perfectionist, I understand why he doesn’t like the idea, but I defer to the judgment of people who know better.

      • YanDev feels like he shouldn’t have to do all this, which is totally correct. He should not have to take these kind of measures, but he does have to now, which is a shame

  26. Much of the negative comments on the YT video are from people who are trying to argue that 12-year-olds can make professional level art and can be mature enough and therefore should be allowed to volunteer… honestly, even if there was an art savant 12-year-old that was mature enough to handle violence and bloodshed without letting it affect their development, there are still many reasons to disallow them from being involved with YanSim imo.

      • Children are unreliable. They can’t be taken seriously as volunteers because not only are their skills usually supbar, but because they can’t be counted on. Also, allowing children to contribute to an M rated game is just looking for trouble.

      • Not all children are immature, talentless, lazy and whiny. Some can take responsibility, you know? And there are exceptions. Just because someone older can’t draw doesn’t mean a child can’t. I see where you’re coming from, but not all the children are the same. And the “child” does not have to be a 12 year old. For example they can be 16 and pretty good but they can’t contribute to the game because of age. I’m just trying to say that not all kids are spoiled brats who think their work is the best.

      • I think you may have missed my point. I’m not judging. I said that there may very well be people who are an “art savant 12-year-old that was mature enough to handle violence and bloodshed without letting it affect their development,” but there are still many reasons for minors to not volunteer with such a project.

To contribute, someone would have to:

A.) have several years of experience in their field. So if you are an artist and are, say, 15, you must have started when you were 11 or 12, and must be able to compete with those who were drawing since they were 11 or 12 and took college classes in art and did graduate studies in art and now work for an animation company.

and B.) be able to 100% handle the mature themes in YanSim without having it affect your growth and development, which you cannot know until you are in your mid to late twenties simply because that is how long the brain takes to fully develop.

It is simply not likely that there are many people who meet A and B that are willing to work on YanSim.

Also, legal reasons come to mind when working with minors. In the US, it’s the kind of thing where adults have had to cut communication with very mature individuals who were below 18 once they found out they were below 18 because they didn’t not want there to be any way such an interaction could be construed as problematic.

For example, as a PhD student, I have to mentor a student intern every summer. Sometimes this is a college student, and sometimes this is a high school student. One of the high school students was 16, and was talented in both art and the science skills needed for laboratory work. Initially, she and I were thinking we would work on an art project outside of the grad school internship program. However, because she was 16, I did not feel comfortable working with her outside the protection of the grad school. It’s not that I didn’t trust her, it’s that if something bad happened I would be held responsible as a legal adult. Is is shitty and stupid that if she was a year-and-a-half older everything would have been fine? Absolutely. Does that make the law any different? Not at all.

It’s true that YanDev did not portray the art of minors fairly at all by showing the MSPaint drawing as if all minors draw that way. He also did not state any reasons for not wanting to work with minors other than his opinion on who should be allowed to play a mature-rated game (which, while I understand minors may be able to handle mature themes, I think ESRB ratings exist for a reason. It’s like drinking – yes there are people under 21 who can drink responsibly, and people over 21 who are idiots. But we have to draw the line somewhere, and 18 and 21 are the arbitrary lines set by our culture and law). But, even though it is anecdotal evidence, it is reasonable that if the poor-quality artwork and 3D modeling he showed in the video came from a mix of people who were over and under 18, but the high quality volunteer work came only those over 18, he could at least weed out half of the unneeded emails by discouraging people under 18 from sending him volunteer requests. He would also be avoiding potential legal headaches by not working with those under 18.

I 100% agree with you that not all kids are whiny brats, and it was a little messed up for him to use that picture of a very little child throwing a tantrum as being representative of all minors.

On a side note, regardless of maturity, the amount of 12-13 -year-olds who do watch let’s players of YanSim is concerning to me. I was too embarrassed to write out curse words when I was in this age range and would feel guilty for days if I wrote b followed by a bunch of stars. I had zero desire to see R-rated movies at that time. So I completely don’t understand why there is such a push to allow kids to do those kinds of things. The amount of 13-ish-year-olds watching things like Deadpool was ridiculous to me. Like at that age you are just getting decommissioned from the KND! Freakin’ calm down! But I totally understand that not everyone would agree with that part of my opinion, which is why I appended it as a side note.

In the end, it is really YanDev’s opinion that matters. He is the one making and leading the direction of the game. If he says he doesn’t want minors to volunteer, and they are angry and decide to sabotage the development of the game by continually e-mailing YanDev, well, they are able to do that.

      • Thank you for taking the time to write that comment. I respect your views on the subject and I can understand you better. I’m glad you took your time to calmly explain your opinion and didn’t get angry like most people on the Internet. I realize that the law exists and honestly, it’s lame, but that’s the way it is. I do not live in the US and I don’t know how strict the law is, but some people just sell M rated games to minors in some stores, so I am confused about US.
And I must agree that this generation is strange. Some people think that they’re awesome just because they can say, watch and play whatever they want. This is the time when you can see everything with the help of Internet, but some people are misusing the Internet. And that’s why we have an army of spoiled 12 year olds which create the stereotype.

  27. Hello Yandere dev, I’m not sure if leaving comment to you is okay to not bother you. I’m interested in Yankee (delinquent) culture from Japan, so here is a suggestion about delinquents’ names. In Japan, delinquents always call each other as nicknames, the nicknames are rebellious. For example, “総長【そうちょう】” sou chou, is for the leader of male delinquents. And here is a link for yankees’ words, it’s Japanese but I’m happy to translate to you. http://www.ibaraking.com/advance/yankee3.htm

  28. You know… And this is going to sound incredibly up-my-own-butt, but I’m a professional artist with experience. I’m not under 18, no, no, no, not one of those people… But I’ve done a lot of work, both solo and team projects. And in the self-publication industry, be it games, books, inventions, etc… You help people out. You make connections that are both business and personal. I’ve met some of my best friends this way. There have been times where I wouldn’t have been hired if I hadn’t made the connections I made. If you are not willing to interact with other people in this industry and you plan to make this a full-time job, it will be the death of you.

I design characters. Appearance, personality, background story, relationships… Everything from the ground up. That is my job, that is what I do, an I do a lot of it. I work with all sorts of people because of it. And I was ready to sign-up for this game. I was cherry-picking pieces to put in my portfolio, I was drawing up new ideas and suggestions… But I’m not going to volunteer my time and my talent for this guy, and I can’t honestly see why anyone with a head on their shoulders would, either.

Let me explain. This video outburst… It’s a bad, bad sign. I’ve seen it before, with devs, artists, and pretty much everyone who is inexperienced in a leadership position (without any leadership skills, of course). They freak-out, and this guy freaked out in a 20 minute video on the anniversary of the game’s development. That’s not good. There was someone who said that the fans were the only thing holding this together, and I agree. I’ve never seen anything like this in terms of a dedicated fan base. The fans were actually told that they were the problem unless they were sending fan art (Why the dev doesn’t have a forum board/separate e-mail for submitting fan works only where people aren’t trying to contact him is beyond me, it’s incredibly… dumb. It’s just dumb.), and they still stuck around. This dev is incredibly lucky to have them. This is his biggest shield right now. He doesn’t know a damn thing about who his fans really are, but he’s still lucky to have them. I don’t think the fans realize how much power they have, here. I don’t think the dev realizes it, either.

When this usually happens, when a person in a leadership role freaks out and refuses to hand over the spokesman position to someone else, or if they refuse to share the leadership… The project usually collapses. They can’t handle it, they’re not able to get the message out correctly, and the whole thing implodes. The project is either scrapped or in perpetual development limbo. Based on my past experiences, it would not surprise me if one of those two things happens. Either the dev will keep leeching the Patreon money every month and never release the game under the guise of it being in development, or he’s going to take the money from Kickstarter and run with it. And from the way things are looking, he would probably try to pass it off as the fans’ fault. Unless you’ve sent fan art, of course.

Prove me wrong. I don’t want to see anyone fail. It’s a bad deal for everyone– the dev, the volunteers, those making donations, even the industry. But I have seen it, time after time, and it becomes even more dicey when money is on the line. This dev needs to get it together, like, SINCERELY get it together before it’s too late.

But, then again, I’m just a random person on the internet. So whether or not you agree with me is up to you.

    Toodles.

    • You know, if you sent an email with your portfolio and then explained what you’ve written above, he would be far more likely to listen to you, as you’ve had artistic experience, than the rest of us scrubs. :p

    • PLEASE email this to him with your portfolio attached. Start with the stuff about your background so he doesn’t delete it after the first sentence. He doesn’t want to hear this, but he needs to if the game is ever to be finished.

    • You know, I’ve been reading quite a few comments now since I made my own comment excusing the Secretary thing. But now I’m kinda seeing why everyone is so angry and Pissed, I love this game, it’s one of the few thing I actually look forward to anymore, but as you said, I have also seen this behavior. As much as I, myself am a perfectionist and as someone who doesn’t normally trust others to do my work, I know how he feels, but now that I think about it properly, I also know how much it helps for someone to get involved, even if they screw it up or it takes awhile for them to do it right. I really, really don’t want to have to leave the development of this, but with the way he’s acting I agree that it’s highly likely that it’s going to crumble. As someone who was inspired to go into game development because of him, it really saddens me to see the whole project and him become like this.

  29. I’m emailing him to advertise this scrub he chose for the dating sim. If he’s that qualified, then at least let us see his other works. Or shit, at least give the company name:

  30. I know that videos take time to make and all, but I’m starting to get a little worried about Devpai… I mean, the video he put up about his email situation didn’t get such a good reception and, well, it kinda worries me… Normally I’d be okay, but… Without him really on Twitter anymore I’m kinda just hoping he’s hanging in there… I just hope he’s okay ;-;

  31. hi
it is a great game but I have lot of questions :
in the future, a sport activity will be possible?
although it is a mature game, why the game is censored? I know it is not hentai but it is weird..
    the + :
    this game has potential.
    the – :
the town ‘activity” is an pain in the ass: the bicycle is hard to drive (even with keyboard and xbox controller)
a tutorial ingame will be welcome
    nudity censored.
