Personalities and Photography in Yandere Simulator

It’s time for a new build and a new video!

This video explains my reasoning for adding certain things to the game, tells you what’s new this week, and describes some things that I’d like to add to the game in the future:

Here’s a list of everything that is new in the latest build:

Personas and Photography

  • There are now 7 Personality types, or “Personas” in total.
  • The 3 new ones are Coward, Evil, and Social Butterfly.
  • (Female) Students will now react when the player aims a camera at them. Their reaction depends on their personality.
  • For now, all male students will have the Loner personality or Teacher’s Pet personality, and will not react to the camera. I can’t give them other personalities or reactions because, at this point in time, I don’t have an animation rig for male characters, and I can’t transfer female animations to male skeletons.
  • If the player joins the Photography Club, students will not react to the camera, and will allow the player to Photograph them without any problems.

Bug Fixes

  • Attempted to fix a bug that would get cause two students walking in a straight line towards one another to get “stuck” on one another, and unable to proceed along their paths.
  • The player is no longer allowed to use the “Torture for 12 hours” or “Torture for 18 hours” option to skip the day on a Friday, since this would break the Calendar screen.
  • Attempted to fix a bug where a student dying from poison could have their “dying from poison” animation be interrupted.
  • Removed shadows from the custom face template image in the Streaming Assets folder.
  • If Senpai dies because of an easter egg, he will come back to life the next day.
  • Did a better job of hiding the hidden girl.
  • Fixed bug that would allow students to walk around during the post-game screen or after a game over, which was causing several other bugs to be possible.
  • Fixed bug that would cause Kokona’s phone event to malfunction if the player was speaking to Kokona while her event was beginning.
  • Fixed bug that would cause Kuu Dere’s Student Info page to display Mai Waifu’s portrait.
  • Fixed an incorrect classroom sign.

Additions

  • Added a humorous “WARNING” message to the beginning of the game. I might remove it, if people complain that it gives the game the wrong vibe.
  • Added a bunch of “Fake” students who exist so that the player can join clubs that don’t have official club leaders yet.
  • An accessory will now appear on Yandere-chan’s body when she joins certain clubs (Cooking, Occult, Martial Arts, Photography).
  • Attempted to improve the framerate of the game by making optimizations to certain scripts.
  • Added hair physics to some long hairstyles that were lacking physics.
  • Gave each teacher in the game a unique appearance.
  • Added a greenhouse to the gardening club zone.
  • Added 6 new hairstyles for Yandere-chan.
  • Added 1 new hairstyle for Senpai-kun.

Sanity Effects

  • Ever since the first week of the game’s development, Yandere-chan’s eyes would shrink when she lost her sanity. Previously, her eyes would shrink into very small dots. This reflects an “angry” character, not a “hollow” character, so I have changed the minimum size of her eyes. Her eyes can still shrink, but not as much as before. Her eyes are meant to say “I am empty and dead inside”, and not “I am violent and crazy.”
  • Previously, Yandere-chan’s eyes would become blank and lifeless when “Yandere Vision” was activated. Now, they become blank when she loses sanity.
  • Now, when Yandere Vision is activated, Yandere-chan’s eyes become red.
  • A shadow now gradually falls over Yandere-chan’s face as she loses sanity.

By the way, I foolishly forgot to mention it last time, but the “Bad Time” easter egg was only made possible through help from Saracen! Thank you, Saracen!

What’s Next?

My current objective is to make all clubs functional. The reason that I implemented personalities this week was so that I could get the Photography club’s benefit to function. So, the next features that I’ll add to the game will be “whatever features must be implemented in order to make all clubs become functional.” The Light Music club’s benefit is that Yandere-chan gains access to a cello case that allows her to carry a corpse without appearing suspicious…but only if that corpse has been chopped up into pieces first. So, the Light Music Club can’t become functional until dismemberment returns to the game. I definitely want to re-implement it…let’s just hope that I can pull it off within 2 weeks!

  1. This new build looks incredible! I wish I could play it, but at the moment I don’t have a properly functioning laptop. Hopefully I can’t get a new one soon. I’m so excited for this game! Once it’s finally finished, it’ll deserve all of the gaming awards!

  2. Oh, I am excited. I am very excited.
(No, really, I just screamed and…)
This is going to be the most amazing game ever when it’s done. I know it.

  3. Only in Yandere Simulator you can find a student who joins the Music Club just so she can hide her victims in a cello case. I love it

  4. And I was right, this is an AWESOME update! I don’t care if YS is far away for being complete, this is good enough for me. Great job YandereDev!

  5. hey does anyone know how yanderedev chose to deal with the whole crisis in January with the “should I put up the kickstarter much earlier than expected/cut things from the game/ give it to a company?”
what did he decide on? doing the kickstarter sooner?
    thanks
    if anyone knows…

  6. i think the sleuth trait kinda shows a flaw in the info-chan system. to be more specific the rest of the personalities could easily be justified with personality quirks, like cowards being jumpy around loud noises, heroics being annoyingly helpful, teachers pets being suck-up brownnosers, etc. but sleuths… maybe it’s just i can’t think of a quirk for them off the top of my head… they just seem harder to justify info-chan knowing about them?

  7. This is one of the only two video games I’ve actually waited eagerly for the release of the next update. And this one isn’t even finished… You are a wonderful person who is capable of many wonderful things Yandere Dev. I wish you only good luck.

  8. What if this game had a fart system, say you had a bad lunch, and you farted near a dead body and left the scene of the crime along with your stench. A nearby student smells this but sees no one but the body. Then later in the day you fart but in front of the witness and they recognize the smell. You are suspected of being the culprit but no one believes the witness because it’s a wild claim.

    Loving the update btw.

    • I don’t really think that’s a good idea, this game isnt supposed to be played by a younger audience… basically, if you still think farts are “funny” you may be a bit too young for the game…

  9. I really like this update from the look of the Youtube video. With the Evil personality, can you make a evil personality character become yandere chan’s friend if she does something for that person? Different friends with different personalities with different abilities. In other words, needs more side missions like that bra recovering side missions. Just a suggestion.

    • I kind of doubt that. Whenever anyone would ask this on Twitter, YandereDev would always say that an Evil persona will never assist you. They just don’t want to get in the way. Sure, they won’t report you, but they will probably never help you.

    • That could be an interesting take on the mind slave mechanic. You won’t have to keep torturing people to get help killing others, but you’ll be left with an accomplice that could spill their guts, or even become so enamored with you that they’ll try to kill Senpai because you’ve become THEIR Senpai.

  10. Just woke up and saw the new build! Thank you Devpai! I have one question though – about the photography club and it’s members. If the school atmosphere is low, and you kill one pr more of the members, will the club remain active? Or will it disband, but keep investigating?
Thank you for developing Yandere Simulator!

  11. Evil is way too similar to cowardly.

How about this? Turn “evil” students into blackmailers. When they catch you, they’ll take a snapshot with their phone and flee. It’s best to deal with these students before they can leave the school and wipe the phone data. They won’t reveal your secret immediately, but they’ll force you to do things for them, sometimes including spreading lies and harming others than can have a negative impact on your reputation.

Refusal is not an option, as failing to or deciding not to do the task set to you will result in them calling the police, and trying to kill them after they’ve witnessed you and fled will result in a police investigation where they will find the evidence of your crimes at their home. Completing their tasks will reward you with them getting rid of the evidence… wherein you can then deal with them at your leisure.

You don’t necessarily have to kill them. You can knock them out, like with the syringe, erase the data and leave them alive. They’ll try to spread your crime around to get you in trouble, but without evidence they’ll end up hurting their own reputation.

    Just an idea I had.

  12. We finally have more features that make killing harder. I was worried that the game would make it too easy to go on a killing spree (and thus trivialize it). I really like this current direction.

In addition, it’d be great if the photography club members were more difficult to get rid of than regular students since they do seem to have a critical role in balancing the game. Or else, even more obstacles that actively discourage reckless killing would be nice.

  13. It should be a “dumb” personality. A dumb student who has witnessed murder will laugh at you for murdering someone.
    JK ignore my suggestion

  14. Good work Yanderedev, i was waiting for this, and.. this worth it at all :D!
The evil personality, will ask Yandere-chan for kill someone, right?
    That’s a great idea.
But, i think the evil personality will manipulate you, hehe.

    And one question…
    Will be a Yandere personality?
    …I know, the last opponent..

but, could be a Yandere personality girl and.. she could love other person, but not Senpai?
She could be the Ayano’s friend, or accomplice…

    Just think it, Yanderedev :3

    I hope you’ll answer,

(I’m from Argentina, so.. sorry if i don’t speak very well english)..

  15. Is the Evil personality only going to stay at clapping at your misdemeanors and not reporting you? I wish they could do more, like, maybe take a picture of your work and try to blackmail you, or, maybe do their own killings, and you can run into them, or get blamed for them.

  16. Hi yanderedev. You could add random personalities. When games starts, each student has random personality. You could also create generic skeleton for male and female and randomly change textures on them each game start.

  17. Awesome update! I really like the future role of Photography Club. I can only imagine how will they act if the school atmosphere is low. Maybe they will patrol the whole school during breaks at high speed? Maybe in hope to catch a criminal they will hide in “suspicious” lone places where it’s convenient to murder someone? Or both?
But I think Photography club (and the game itself) would be more challenging if the school atmosphere drop easier. Maybe different changes around the school will affect differently on atmosphere penalty in some gradient:
    – Students who stop coming to school (not much)
    – Pulls of blood (well, that’s suspicious. but it can be delinquents’ take-down. everyone start worry about local gang)
    – Limbs (that’s freaky but we don’t know whose are those)
    – Corpses (someone obviously kill students of this school. imho those one should drop atmosphere heavily, around 40% per body)

  18. I wonder if there will ever be a faint hearted personality, where the witness just faints on the spot :3c Thats a realistic thing for a student to do, and the player can either kill them there, drag them and kill/dispose of them while they’re unconcious, or theres a chance that the player will miss them and later realize they were still alive, which leads to a witness testimony to the police if the player isn’t careful.

  19. Hey Yandere-Dev, nice job! You always deliver great updates 🙂

However I’m starting to wonder if this game isn’t slowly turning into School Shooting Sim… yeah the point is to kill Senpai’s rival and those who saw you if you’re sloppy, preferably in an indirect way. Still most updates implement new ways to terrorize and kill people in more elaborate ways. Bullying, mind slaves, and now the coward personality… that’s heavy stuff.

It’s your game in the end, maybe that’s what you had in mind the whole time.

    • “School Shooting Sim”… Metal Gear Solid should be then : “War mongering and stealth massacre simulator”.

You didn’t surely have seen Mirai Nikki either…

This game is violent and allow violence, sure, but there’s no actual guns in it. So no actual school shooting…
Allow me to remind you that you are a yandere in Japan, where many scenarios are set in schools and academies.
Yanderes are violent lovers. Also, real school societies are actually even worse…

The goal within all the game, is to have the most credible world possible and many varied interactions too.

  20. This update is awesome, I love it! The evil personality made me smile a bit.

Also good job on thinking about stuff like tutorials or ingame help, those are rather hard to imagine since when we are following your blog, we basically…..already know how to do everything.
