Should Yandere Simulator be re-named?

Depending on your perception of Yandere Simulator, and depending on what you think the game is supposed to be about, you might be surprised to hear this, but I don’t think that “Yandere Simulator” is the most appropriate title for this game.

I’ve put my thoughts into a video:

The last time I polled the fanbase, I think I got a pretty clear picture of the game’s audience. However, I’d like to run those polls again to find out if Yandere Simulator’s fanbase has changed over the past year.

What do you want the MOST from Yandere Simulator?

Those are the only polls that I’m prepared to create right now. I might want to poll the community on other matters in the future, but for now, that’s all I’ve got.

I spent the first three days of the month fixing bugs. Making the “Past, Present, and Future” video took several days, I spent several days getting my computer operational after my main hard drive died, and making the “Should Yandere Simulator be re-named?” video took several more days. Now it’s January 13th, which leaves me with about 1 day to try and update Yandere Simulator. (Since it takes at least 1 day to make an update video, I’d have to work on the 13th, record a video on the 14th, and upload it on the 15th).

It’s nearly impossible to accomplish anything significant within 1 day, so I don’t think you should get too excited for a spectacular update on the 15th. I’m going to try my best to implement something special that I think will only take one day to implement, but I don’t want to make any promises.

By the way – if you’ve been following this blog for over a year, you might recall that January 17th and January 19th are special days for me. I’ll be hosting a special event on Jan 17th and 19th. I’ll make a blog post with the details on Jan 16th. However, it’s completely unrelated to Yandere Simulator, so I’ll delete the blog post after the event ends.

By the way…

In my latest video, I prominently featured three indie games: Surgeon Simulator, Goat Simulator, and Shower With Your Dad Simulator. I used these games as an example of why the word “Simulator” is associated with humor. However, I wasn’t trying to imply that these are bad games, I wasn’t trying to imply that these games are poorly designed, and I wasn’t trying to shame the developers of these games. I’ve played all of those games, and I got a laugh out of each one of them! I’m merely trying to communicate the fact that I don’t want Yandere Simulator to be dismissed as a joke simply because it has the word “Simulator” in the title. I intend to spend the next few years of my life trying to make sure that this game has excellent gameplay and solid design, and it would be very sad if all my work goes to waste because of a word in the game’s title.

  1. I like the name Yandere Simulator… I never felt like it would subtract from the game in any way… Well, then again I still find this game funny on a strange, twisted level however dark and serious it is so I’m probably the odd one out…
    But I’m cool with the Notion to make Yandere Simulator the Subtitle of the Game… I mean, YandereDev raised a perfect valid point. Searching for the game would be much easier when the old name stays as a subtitle.
    LoveSick is fine. It is basicly what yandere means in an abstract kind of way.

  3. “Love Sick: Yandere Simulator” is swiftly growing on me. Making it a subtitle works well since it keeps the familiar name but adds a proper name. At the same time, making “Love Sick” the subtitle could also work if Yandev ever wanted to go back and do another game or two with the same base premise of focusing on a yandere but with a different setting, methods, etc. (Office lady yandere anyone?)

    Just FYI, while trademark concerns are valid, you probably won’t have to worry about a clothing designer coming after you for a video game. Typically, trademark disputes involve similar businesses at least. Trademark infringement is the unauthorized use of a trademark or service mark (or a substantially similar mark) on competing or related goods and services; i.e. Starbucks going after a coffee shop using Charbucks in its name.     The fourth paragraph from the bottom also shows that when the court looks at these sorts of cases, the perceptions of customers are very important.

    A video game trademark is highly unlikely to affect a clothing company. The clothing company isn’t even likely to know you exist. Your products are completely different too. The chances of anyone mistaking one company’s product for the other is pretty close to zilch.

In the polls, where it has social manipulation and such, and then brutal murders, I really like both of those, and the fact that you can combine the two when framing someone for murder, or befriending someone just to kidnap and mind break them and using them. So far every aspect yandere dev has talked about is awesome and I am very much looking forward to this game to one day be a reality. Thank you for all your hard work!

  5. I admit that my taste for the LoveSick isn’t all that high, and I kinda like “Crazy In Love” myself (helps keep the ‘multiple angle thing’).

    I also think that Yandere Simulator is what you built the brand name on, so you might want to keep it as a subtitle.

  6. Unrelated to the name change, but rather, the people who enjoy the easter eggs and antics. Perhaps you could implement a free-play mode available only after beating the game, where the game would behave more like the de-bug builds… more like a simulator game, if you will. It’s only a thought, and I have no idea the technicalities of programming it, so don’t take this suggestion super seriously. It’s just an idea…

    i loved the name lovesick but it would be nice to keep the old name too so how about yandere simulator lovesick

I hate to bother, but when you do your kickstart, some other people mentioned you should put it on steam, when it gets closer to that campaign I think you should consider putting it up onto steam for the campaign as well. Also an idea, would probably take too much time and effort(No idea on programming or anything), but what if you made a couple different maps, when watching older videos where you had the trees or something out front of the school looked nice, and maybe being able to have 2-3 different layouts, or make a add on in the future for it if it sells well enough.

    • What scares me even more is 11-15 year olds are the second most players. xD I can’t imagine a game like this being played by someone 15- I mean I can see it.. but no one under 10 should play at all. I wonder what rating YandereDev will go with. I’m thinking 13+ But my personal preference would be 17+ I’m 18 and find the game very violent, but of course that’s just subjective.

    I think Lovesick: Yandere Simulator is a very good title for the game. By putting the word “Simulator” in a subtitle, it helps deemphizie the idea of it being associated with the number of joke games with that term in its title while keeping the branding you’ve built up over the years.

  11. I see where you’re coming from and i get it. I think it is a good solution to take it as a subtitle. However, I think lovesick ist associated too much with crying teenage girls and that people wouldn’t even read up to the yandere part. For me, a little change would do the trick: “Sick for love – a yandere simulator”

  12. you could use something like ‘Yandere: SickLove’ with ‘lovesick’ backwards as their are no games with the use of ‘SickLove’ however the idea was that in the game/game title the word ‘lovesick’ is spelt backwards and the game is ‘Yandere: SickLove’ or ‘Yandere Simulator: Sicklove’ but its just an idea if u dont like it its ok.

  13. “Yandere: ‘Senpai Will Be Mine'”, with the longer sentence as subtitle. This name strikes multiple purposes:

    1) It keeps the word “Yandere” for which the game is heavily identified with already.
    2) It still sounds Japanese, with that element being a big influence on the game’s style and demographic and, therefore, a future selling point that needs to be taken care of.
    3) It looks like a translated name from an anime. That will strike a lot of fans on their good side, I bet.
    4) It is a direct quote from the game’s intro fragment right now. A classic “marketing” technique.
    5) It is powerful… if the word “Senpai” does not strike you as funny.
    6) If the word “Senpai” DOES strike you as funny, then it will pike your curiosity, which is also good.

    Any thoughts..? Other purposes or something negative I missed..? I believe it is a good name, if I say so myself. Ironic, coming from a dude with a horrible Youtube username (probably why i prefer going as “Nameless” here).

So, you could probably stand to do the kickstarter a little earlier than you originally planned, not too much earlier but earlier, but more than that, you should really cut out any notion of having a town. Anything you have planned that would take place in the town could easily be substituted with mini-games. Rather than building a town, that energy could be converted into adding more depth to the school itself by adding in eccentric teachers and adding genuine personality to characters.

    Tl;Dr
    More in depth character will get you far more mileage than a living breathing town will, all town activities could be replaced with equivalent mini-games or even text-based events.

  15. I’m really glad you are renaming it. I don’t think people would ever take it seriously with the word “simulator” in it. I thought about it before and im glad you were also aware about the problem it entails.

    I love the name “Love Sick” i think it is the name that mostly summarize what the game is actually about.
    I’ve seen lots of people suggesting really long names playing with the words yandere and senpai, but i don’t think you should be that obvious with the title. It can come a across as a silly fanmade anime visual novel game!

  16. I think it really depends on when you intend to release it. If you stick to a 2019 timeline, you should have enough time to rebrand it before release, you could rename it to LoveSick: Yandere Simulator, then later rename it to Yandere: LoveSick. If you keep ‘Simulator’ in the name, you might not achieve the desired effect. It seems likely the uninformed might still consider it a Simulator game.

    If you’re going with a shorter time frame, then it seems much more troublesome, since people would be likely to still be looking for it as Yandere Simulator, or you wouldn’t be able to remove Simulator from the name.

    On a side note, especially as you are moving toward bigger features, preparing a larger, more significant update to coincide with any name changes, might help them be received better.

  17. Please name it “Lovesick: Yandere Simulator” because if you remove these two last words, there may be people who will be confused because they’ve known the game as “Yandere Simulator” and won’t recognize the title as “Lovesick”

  18. What about switching the words ‘Love’ and ‘Sick’ to ‘Sick Love’? I think people may dismiss the title because it has (and starts with) the word ‘Love’. Guys may dismiss the game because of the word ‘Lovesick’ sounding too feminine.

    Also, with ‘Sick Love’, people may be more intrigued to check out the game. “What is ‘Sick Love’? How can love be sick?”

  19. Maybe you should call it; lovekills -yandere simulator. Or something that is connected with the game. I know that lovesick IS connected with the game but I think that especially boys wouldn’t buy it because of the name.

  20. I honestly think Lovesick:Yandere simulator works fine. Also when you reach the final part of the game, I think you should take out Yandere simulator and just leave Lovesick once you finish the game. Lovesick is a common name. But I think you should come up with a unique different name. But I will wait and see what everyone else thinks. So far Lovesick is great because it describes the whole game,
    completely.

  21. I really would not like Yandere Simulator to be changed to a different name, subtitle or not, I think people may have grown too attached to the title already, well at least I have. If you change the name now, the game may not want to play a game called “LoveSick” because they may presume its an internally different game to what Yandere Simulator is. And after all, you are playing as a Yandere girl, so Yandere Simulator is a more appropriate title in my opinion.

If you keep “yandere simulator” as a subtitle, people (who knows what “yandere” means) will understand what is the game about. I personally don’t think that people who don’t know what a yandere is will search for the game.

    By the way, since you’re caring about me sensei, could you make a bit of fanservice even for us girls? You know… Lots of us like to play yandere simulator, and i personally don’t think that making us a bit more happier will damage your reputation.

  25. I agree with Simulator not being appropriate. As opposed to implying humor, I always thought of it as a game without a story. You are just simulating what it would be like to be doing whatever the game is about, whether it be being a surgeon or a goat. Those games don’t have backstories, but Yandere does.

    As for the name, I think Simulator has to go, but I personally am not fond of lovesick. Sounds like a Visual Novel. People seem to like it though. I was thinking just Yandere-chan, or something like Yandere: The Fight for Senpai (these are lame). anyway, love your work YandereDev!

  27. As I commented on YouTube upload. I thought that “Yandere Simulator” name- was meant to play on the genre of “Japanese Love Sim(s)”. I actually never connected it to being a spoof game.

    I think more thought should be considered. Because, to me, “LoveSick” is a pretty common as a term and rather bland. And calling it “LoveSick: Yandere” is, well, repetitive, if the purpose of the term is to match what a YanDere is.

    “Crossed in Love” – which also means LoveSick.
    “YearnSerk” // “YearnSerker” – Yearning + Berserk(er).
    “Complex Love” // “Love Complexity”
    “Weekday Love(r)” – In relation to the school days.

    ….It’s perfect. It works so perfectly for the duality of the game and a yandere’s nature. In a bloody visual, it’s clearly twisted, representing the sort of insanity of a stalker.But in the light pink and lovey-dovey valentine-esque visuals of “Love❤︎Sick” it conjurs an image of a pining schoolgirl in an unrequited love. It’s. Just. So. PERFECT.

    I’d say make the subtitle “A Yandere Simulator” as opposed to just “Yandere Simulator” to make it clear that it’s the genre of simulation and not a simulator game in the vein of Goat Simulator, but- You’re the game dev. it’s your game. And I LOVE IT.

    • I agree with this. “A Yandere Simulator” as a subtitle sets it apart from other simulators and is more of a description rather than the actual title.

  30. Well, there are actually already two meanings of “simulator” in game industry… I mean, how dificult would be to define the third meaning? Btw, renaming the game after almost two years? Really? I-I-I just… What the fuck? 😀 Anyway, seems like community likes it, so… Yeah, as long as the game’ll stay same, name doesn’t really matter… But for gods sake, don’t make illness curing game out of it…

  31. That moment when you realize the 11-15 year old fanbase is larger than the 21-15 year old one…

    Either way, I don’t think of simulation games as joke games, I think of them as sandbox games. When I think of a Yandere Simulator, I think of a game where I can think up a reasonable scheme to take out my rivals and then use materials in the environment to actualize it, and where there are as many interactions within the environment as possible. Simulation games, to me, are immersive experiences. This is part of why I’d rather see YandereDev make the school as interactive as possible (and, for the love of God, add more personalities than five for ninety or more students,) than implement a town.

    I think LoveSick works as a name if he keeps Yandere Simulator on as a subtitle. LoveSick by itself is a little too bland, but he pretty much sold me with the reasoning behind it. If the subtitle is with it, people who know what a yandere is (which is probably going to make up a good chunk of people who become interested in the game up to a certain point in time) will be able to make the connection more easily. Then again, a schoolgirl with a bloody weapon also gets the point across pretty well.

  32. You could always go for “Yandere-Chan!!!” Sweet, simple, and ironic.

    Or you could parody light novel titling and go with “My Delusional Love Isn’t Going Well As I Expected” or something like that.

    Sorry to hear about all the computer drama you’ve had. Geez. But so glad to hear you didn’t lose anything!

    Anyways, you make good points about the simulator part of the name. I first discovered this game when looking up yandere guys (which there aren’t enough of btw!) And I saw a vid of Markiplier playing an early build of the game. I actually thought that the game was complete and it was indeed just a simple little thing. It wasn’t until I think the update with Kokona on the phone, that I realized this project was something a lot more special. After that, I started following your blog and watching Azzman’s videos. I haven’t downloaded a debug of the game, since I can watch videos of it while doing my school work. Yay multitasking!

    That said, I do think yandere should still be included in the name somehow. I think that alone will draw a fanbase in. Plus the game takes place in an authentic Japanese school, with Japanese names and honorifics. So yeah. Not very localized. Lovesick is a decent name, though I have seen some people suggest other great names which may solve the bride and groom game, and trademark issue.

  34. I think you can’t get rid of “Yandere Simulator”, Yandere is the core of the game, but doesn’t sound that well alone.
    If this has to appeal to the most, a single japanese word is enough, there is no need for senpai or any other word, it might be too much.

    Lovesick (or LoveSick) sounds a bit like a romance VN or a series for teenagers, but written LOVESICK, or even something like L.O.V.E.S.I.C.K, it looks a bit better in my opinion.
    It may be better to avoid a blatant “Love” in the title, but HeartBreak kind of loses the power of the word “sick”, I’ve tried to find something with “Insane” but couldn’t find anything good.

    Still, keeping the “Simulator” in the title kind of bothers the title LOVESICK, so it is not an easy choice – but getting rid of it would lose the reputation that the game has now acquired. An alternative with ‘Sim’ isn’t neither a good idea because of the Sims games…
    The alternative of “A Yandere Simulator” is not bad I think.

    Another point is that “Thank you for following the developement of Yandere Simulator.” has become an important ending to the videos… Maybe you could still call it that way, at least until the crowdfunding campaign.

  35. The more I think about the name ‘LoveSick’, the more I like it in comparison to any other names I’ve seen so far. Seriously. At first I was skeptical, especially about the whole idea of changing the name, but there are certain little things that make me inclined to this name more:

    • Emphasising the “Sick” in “LoveSick” gives the name a subliminally creepy tone and would be consistent with the looks-can-deceive
    theme.

    • Considering the amount of males that play this game, “LoveSick” wouldn’t make much of a difference when used with the subtitle
    “Yandere Simulator” to the amount of male players.

    • “Heartbreak” is probably the most cliché thing I’ve seen. There are way too many professional games with a similar title. Don’t go
    there.

    • “LoveSick” is barely used and is quite unique in the professional gaming industry. Aside from the scatophillic-wedding one,
    I’m yet to find a decent game with this title, let alone a professional one. Thus, it’ll be more memorable.

    • When used as “LoveSick: Yandere Simulator” it’ll be easily recognisable, told apart, and could be shortened to any of the two.

    • Older fans will still recognise it and it’ll still show up in search engines.

    • You will get used to it, trust me. YandereDev has expressed a desire for a better, more suitable name since long ago, and this is
    still a rather early stage in the game so the only real impact it’ll have will be either on the fantards or the incompetent.

  36. I’d figure I’d throw my two cents in as well. I’ve been following yandere simulator since October 2015 and I have always loved the title “Yandere Simulator”. It’s simple, catchy and as you stated in your video, a brand that people have come to recognize. I understand the reasoning behind wanting to change the name but I personally feel that you should at least make it a subtitle.

    As for the Easter eggs, I think that while they aren’t going to be the main part of the gameplay, I think it would be fun if they were included in a mini game or something that can be unlocked. It would be cool it there was a way of unlocking different modes by killing people in a certain fashion such as “Kill 10 people by electrifying them in order to unlock Cirino Mode” or “Win 15 fights with a martial artist to unlock One Punch mode”. or something along those lines so that people have to take the game seriously first and then can have fun in the “simulator” portion of the game.

  37. It is the developer’s choice, but to be honest I don’t really see a huge need to change the name of the game, and to be honest, I fear it may be a detriment in the long run. Doing a search online, or even just on Youtube, this game has grown to become a huge sensation, with tons of people playing it or talking about it, and they all know the game as Yandere Simulator. It’s a name that stands out and gets people’s attention, and it’s one that isn’t used for any other games, unlike Lovesick. If you talk to a lot of gamers on here and use the words Yandere Simulator, people will know which game you’re talking about. To me, Lovesick just doesn’t have that grabbing effect. Lovesick is a common word that you hear a lot, and it’s just not as catchy to me. If you showed me two games, one called Lovesick and one called Yandere Simulator, the second one would get my attention and tempt me a lot more.

    Just because it has the word Simulator in the title, to me that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a joke game. It describes what the game is, playing as a Yandere though not necessarily being a Yandere yourself in real life, which is what a simulator is supposed to do. It’s supposed to be a simulation of what a real scenario might be like. In this case, the scenario is being a sociopathic, jealous anime girl who wants to take down her rivals by any means necessary. Granted, it’s not a scenario that comes up a lot in real life, but this game shows what it could be like.

    In the end though, as I said, it is YandereDev’s call, but this is just how I feel about it. I like the title as is.

  38. As someone has said before in a earlier comment, i like their idea of it being callled LoveSick: A Yandere Story. Simulator could bring a negative response but as long as you have yandere somewhere in the title, I think it will be easy to goole search. I mean the big thing about this game is that it is about a Yandere. Overall, its mostly up to you because YOU are the game creator so always be sure to check with yourself and see if YOU really want to make these changes to the games. It is nice to get the fans input but dont forget about your side. Dont be swayed by pleasing the fans so much that you end up hating what you made because its not what YOU wanted it to be. This is your game afterall.
