Don’t Let Senpai Notice You!

UPDATED APRIL 17th 1:00 AM

The latest build of the game can be downloaded here. However, please don’t just ignore the rest of the blog post…I’ve written some important stuff down below.

The biggest additions to the game this week are male students, and a Senpai that finally walks around like a normal student! What does this mean for gameplay? Well…

I fixed a lot of bugs and added a new feature during the first week of April. Here’s what I got done within the past week:

  • Fixed bug that would make Yandere-chan get arrested if she was carrying a bloody weapon in her inventory when leaving school.
  • Fixed bug that would cause the “Now Loading” image to be permanently stuck onscreen when loading the Photo Gallery.
  • Fixed bug that would cause a fleeing student’s body to move towards the school’s exit during their death animation.
  • Fixed bug that would allow the player to see the “Quit Game?” window at the “end-of-day results” screen.
  • Fixed bug that would cause the wrong “end-of-day results” text to appear under certain circumstances.
  • Fixed bug that would cause the cardiograph monitor to appear at the “Study Points” screen.
  • Fixed bug that would trap students outside of school if you rushed to school too quickly.
  • Fixed bug involving the water bucket that would actually cause the game to crash.
  • Attempted to fix the “Students spin when walking up staircases” bug.
  • Fixed bug that would change the color of the sky at the title screen.
  • Fixed bug that would cause dead or dying students to open doors.
  • Students that die will now stay dead after being killed.
  • Implemented several Senpai-related Game Overs.
  • Implemented male students.

APRIL 15th 3:30 AM UPDATE:

  • Fixed bug that would make Senpai walk in place.
  • Fixed bug that would make the game hang after Senpai witnessed murder.

APRIL 15th 8:00 PM UPDATE:

  • Senpai will no longer “notice” you if you’re having a conversation with a student. (Talking with a student is an inconspicuous activity, so it’s like “social camoflague” that causes Senpai to overlook you.)
  • Fixed bug that would allow the player to spawn the “Quit game?” window at the end-of-day screen, during the Senpai cut-scene, and while using the Pass Time feature.
  • Fixed bug that would cause the Senpai cut-scene to play in slow motion if the player had Yandere Vision active while getting spotted by Senpai.
  • Fixed bug that would cause Yandere-chan to be “insta-killed” by Senpai if she was using the Pass Time feature while in his cone of vision.
  • Fixed bug that allowed the player to activate easter eggs during the Senpai cut-scene or while getting a game over.
  • Fixed bug that would cause the police results screen and Senpai’s reaction to occur simultaneously.
  • Attempted to fix the crash bug that occurs when activating the “Hatred” easter egg.

April 17th 1:00 AM UPDATE:

  • The camera will no longer “fall through the floor” if Yandere-chan is noticed by Senpai on the second or third floors of the screen.
  • If Yandere-chan loses more than two-thirds of her Sanity, she loses the ability to speak to students until her Sanity is restored.
  • Fixed bug that would cause the game to hang if Yandere-chan had her camera out when getting spotted by Senpai.
  • Yandere-chan can no longer trigger responses from NPCs or Senpai during “End of Day Results” screen.
  • Students will no longer agree to follow Yandere-chan someplace if she is covered in blood.
  • The game now tracks the number of murder weapons in the school properly.

Does it seem like I didn’t get much done over the last 2-week period, compared to most two-week periods? Well…

Rate of Progress

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to make as much progress with the game as I wanted to over the past two weeks. Ever since the game got a huge boost in publicity, a large chunk of my time has eaten up by answering e-mails and comments about the game, so recently, I haven’t had much free time to actually work on the game.

It’s really important to me to interact with the fans, so I read every e-mail / tweet / blog comment that I get, and I try to respond to every inquiry. However, this takes up a ridiculous amount of time; now that there are so many comments to respond to and questions to answer, my productivity has been reduced to a mere fraction of what it was in previous months.

Regrettably, about 90% of the messages that I read are asking questions that I’ve already answered, reporting “bugs” that aren’t actually bugs, or making suggestions that I’ve already shot down countless times.

If I ignored the fans completely, I’d get a lot more work done and make a lot more progress. However, I don’t want to ignore the fans! So, to make things easier for me, please don’t ask questions that I’ve already answered dozens of times, please don’t write unhelpful bug reports, and try not to suggest features that don’t suit the game, or are far outside the scope of a one-man indie game.

Remember: Every minute I spend answering a question on the blog is a minute I’m not spending developing the game. As a result, you can speed up the game’s development by not asking me questions.

Fortunately, not all of the messages I get are unproductive. Over the past few weeks, I’ve received countless e-mails from very talented people who are generously volunteering to help with Yandere Simulator’s development. I’ve been speaking with 3D modellers, 3D animators, 2D character artists, sound designers, musicians, voice actors, and even singers. This is both a blessing and a curse; I’m blessed to be in contact with so many talented individuals who want to help me out, but answering so many e-mails means that I only have one or two hours left in the day to actually work on Yandere Simulator.

So, even though I don’t have very much new content to show off this week, please don’t think that the game’s progress is slowing down. I’m starting to amass some REALLY cool 3D assets that I can’t wait to plug into the game, but they require a bit more polish until they’re ready to actually show off. You’ll start to see some really cool stuff in the coming weeks, as the new volunteers send me all kinds of awesome things for the game.

As always, thanks for your interest in Yandere Simulator’s development!

  1. Great video as usual! It’s really remarkable what you can get done by yourself, you’re really dedicated! You certainly deserve the publicity! I was wondering who the voice actress that plays yandere chan is? She sounds kinda familiar

  2. Cool. One thing though, the initial reaction is the same each time, which kinda makes sense, except for one time. With the ‘visually insane’ part, I think it’d be better if she reacted with something other than the calm ‘W.waiit! N.noo D:’ Like, maybe make her laugh like a maniac, slowly transitioning to crying like a maniac

  3. The VA for Yandere-chan is kinda cute, at least in these lines.

So will Senpai’s impatience with Yan-chan accumulate over the entire game and never go down, or will it reset from day to day, or drop a level for everyday he doesn’t notice her?

And is there any chance of, in the far flung future, being able to pick between two of three voices for Yandere-chan and Senpai at character customization?

  5. Hi Dev, I ran into a couple bugs in this build…

    1. When Senpai notices you and “Heartbroken” appears, it sometimes doesn’t let you reset from there. It only show YanChan sitting there, no text.

    2. *MAJOR* Sometimes the only student that comes to school in the morning is *just* Senpai! No other students spawn in on either side of the street for some reason.

  6. Have you tried Mantis Bug Tracker to categorize the bugs? That way you won’t get clogged up with duplicate reports.

  7. dude, don’t act like you got nothing done, extra students and senpai noticing you is plenty in my opinion. My only suggestion the moment, is an even harder version of kidnapping, kidnapping SENPAI AND FORCING HIM TO LOVE YOU.

  8. This is a super awesome update! Great work!

Quick question: Since the game isn’t finished, am I right in assuming that Biology is the only class that accumulating points does anything for right now? I didn’t see anyone ask this before, so apologies if I missed it!

  9. Hello 🙂

Great job on the update 😀 The voices are awesome!

Also, a minor bug, but when the police timer drops to 0 when the Senpai noticing you and you being heartbroken thing happens, the police report flashes on screen until the big heartbroken letters pop up. Idk if its just me but the Heartbroken letters and Yan-chan falling to the ground happens REALLY quickly in this case. The menu and everything runs fine after that :3 Maybe the timer could stop while the heartbreaking scene is playing? 🙂

    • I *think* I understand what you’re describing, but it’s pretty difficult for me to piece things together here…

Can you describe the EXACT steps to follow to reproduce the bug?

      • So you kill someone and another person runs and calls the police. The police timer goes down and my character is in a state where senpai would notice her and she’d become heartbroken (so insane, bloody, etc…). In the last 8-6 seconds of the timer I approach senpai and have him notice me. The Heartbroken scene happens and the timer continues to count down. When it hits 0, the police report flashes on screen. When I did it the dialogue was cut short, and the big Heartbroken letters and Yandere-chan collapsing part happened really quickly 🙂

  10. I was thinking, what is senpai starts to notice the fact that some girls are disappearing? Will he change or will he be that stupid anime guy who doesn’t care? How about the other students, maybe they could also fell a little uncomfortable after knowing that people are going missing. I think it’s a good idea, but I don’t know how badly it would affect the gameplay.

Or who knows, maybe you already implemented this and I just didn’t read it in the past.

(I imagine a school rumor going on about a ghost in the school who kills the students, in reality it was just Yandere-chan :P)

  11. I think you got a lot of stuff done, even if you didn’t get to do everything you wanted. You’re still doing a really good job! I’m never ever disappointed in the updates, and you just keep on exceeding my expectations…

Anyway, besides the Heartbroken screen bug (If Senpai notices you and the game goes to the HEARTBROKEN screen, it just stays like that with Yandere-chan sitting in the ground and crying or whatever.) the game if working perfectly!

      • Well, I killed everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, in the time where Senpai is at his closet before first lesson. I started dragging corpses together, because as always I was gonna collect the bodies in a heap and laugh above them, idk, I think it’s fun.

So, Senpai was now standing outside, and there was some corpses lying around near him. I took a chance and tried to drag a body away, hoping that he couldn’t see me. I underestimated his sight…
Um, I was, of course, covered in blood and visibly insane, but I don’t remember if I still carried the weapon… I think that if I did, I carried the scissors. Otherwise I’d use the katana. Senpai noticed me and I got a game over. Then the screen was stuck in that state.

      • Oh, and I noticed a bug with the students…

I accidentally killed a guy while another guy looked… And s he ran to get the police since I wasn’t fast enough. I got rid of all the evidence and everyone was sent home without anyone finding the murderer. So far so good, right? Well, the next day… no one… but Senpai and the rival and me came to school…

… I don’t know if it was intentional? It kinda doesn’t feel like it…

      • When i got stuck at the heartbroken screen i killed the red haired boy in front of senpai with a screwdriver thats how it happend for me.

  12. Hmm.. there seems to be this thing where if Yandere-chan is dragging a body, and you try to change her, uh.. proportions- the visuals get all jittery and movement gets like a warp drive from star trek~

  13. Found a bug it only happend to me once i still have no idea how it happens. It happend to me at lunch time all the students went to their normal locations for lunch time then after a few mins they all just randomly walked outside and tried to reenact their normal locations but outside so the girls were forming a circle in front of the school the boys were standing next to the trees and senpai was trying to escape from school and just kept walking into the closed front gate. Doesnt help much that i have no idea how this bug happens but i thought it would be a good idea to share this so far so others can keep an eye out for this.

  14. Oww Dev-senpai, don’t be so harash for yourself, you made great progress anyway. But now, for a change, I won’t be patting you on the back. I have to say something about Yandere-chan’s VA. And this thing is…
I FREAKIN LOVE YOUR VOICE GIRL.
It’s amazing, it’s fitting, that’s exactly the voice I imagined our lovly killer to have. Only think I’m not fond of is that she sounds not enough mad after being seen in yandere mode. It’s like she became completly calm at once.
But, unfortunetly, I don’t really like Senpai’s voice. It’s so meh compered to Yandere’s voice.

BTW maybe you should make someone to read mails you got and anwser those that are know-bug-reports or stupid questions or suggestions of implementing smthg that you plan or already said that you won’t be doing. I know it’s a bit meh idea, but it’s the only way you can keep contact with fans(and do it Senpai, that’s why I love you so much and why i’m so interested by the game) and still have time for work, that I can think of.

    • Depending on what kind of feedback the voice actors / actresses get, I may hold official “auditions” and let the community vote on the best voice actors / actresses for the roles.

  15. Someone asked about being able to change Yandere-chan’s voice… If you need a willing voice actor for her (/or other students, doesn’t really have to be her) later when making the game, I could do a cutesy girl voice if that’s needed! I’d be happy to try to help if you need voices!

  16. First of all where can we find the list of known bugs? I can’t seem to find it.
Second, I kidnapped a girl just to try it out, and when I checked the basement there was another girl instead. The blue haired one.

  17. I’d have to agree with hiring some sort of secretary, Dev-senpai. But don’t be so hard on yourself. Progress is progress, be it small or large, it’s still a step closer to the finished product. Actually maybe hiring a secretary wouldn’t be very ideal since…well…money. Maybe you can find someone you know on your end who is willing to help you sort through emails and comments.

  18. I can’t seem to get past the menu screen in the latest build. I start the build up and use crtl+alt+del to make it so the pink screen isn’t blank and so that i can see the menu, but when i click ‘resume game’ its starts to fade to black and then freezes. I’ve been able to play the other builds fine so I wonder if something went wrong with the download.

  19. I was wondering if fanart is okay to give to you? I’m super excited about this game so I made a small drawing of Yandere-Chan and was wondering if it was okay to show you?

  20. In terms of VAs, maybe if you had enough time and resources, you can have a few different ones that you can change during the initial customization, for both Yandere-chan and Senpai? Kinda like in games like Saints Row, where you have 3-4 different voices/personalities for the player character.

I get that it’s probably quite a bit of extra work, but this could make it easier when trying to decide which voice to go with, especially if you’re going to leave it up to the community, as most people will probably have different preferences.

    • Ooooh, making it like Saints Row voices would be great. You could have a cutesy voice, a tough/macho girl voice, an elegant voice and like a comedy voice, like maybe a really deep manly voice aha. Of course this is just all conjecture cause I understand why it’d be unlikely

  21. Nice update! I think these new additions to the game is awesome. The only thing I found a little weird, or better said “unusual”, was the voice acting being in english 0.0 Having watched a lot of anime in japanese, it sounds really strange when anime-related games are voiced in english. It’s not a huge problem for me though, I understand it must be really hard to find any japanese voice actors willing to support you.
It’s just, in my opinion, the voice of a yandere sounds much better and “real” in japanese. Take Yuno Gasai for example, masterpiece! ^^

    • I would normally agree (sub > dub), but… In this case, I disagree. The reason why I hate dubs is because you have to solely rely on the translators. But in this case, it’s not Japanese. English is the native language of the game. That, and English sounds a bit more ‘personal’, because I can actually understand what they’re saying.
That said, it would be cool if there was an option to change the spoken language to Japanese, or potentially even more languages. Then again, I guess that’d all cost money and time. Money and time that can be used to make, say, a new environment to stalk Senpai-kun.

  22. Am I the only one who would like to hear Japanese VA in the future? English is not my native language, so hearing English in a Japanese setting kinda freak me out. ^^”

But non the less: Keep up the good work!

  23. It’s really nice to know you’ve been working hard trying to reply you fan’s comment and email. But you don’t really have to make it as your priority. You can just let It be for a moment, it’s not your fault you can’t reply all of them because you know your fan base is definitely getting bigger and bigger. It’s normal for you to not reply all of them if you can’t. We know you’re super busy. Don’t force yourself and think about what is better for you to do 🙂 Goodluck, Yandere Simulator is REALLY awesome. Good job!

  24. Yandere-chan could easily explain all those things by claiming to be in the drama club. That sword? Totally a prop. Looking crazy? Practicing for a play. That blood you’re covered in? Stage blood, yep. The dead girl you’re dragging around? She’s acting with you.
Later you just need to find a place to scalp the girl, kidnap another girl, transplant the dead girl’s hair onto the kidnapped girl, brainwash her into pretending to be the girl you killed and then later be seen with that girl near Senpai to remove all suspicion. Simple.

    • Great. You’d brainwash yourself a new target. The brainwash-girl would think she was in love with Senpai-kun and it would all start over again.

      • You’re brainwashing her to pretend to be the girl you killed, not to believe she is that girl.

  25. I know you said clipping related issues are the last thing on the to-do list, but I was unsure if this fell under that category… If you happen to be on the second floor when you get the Senpai-Heartbreak ending (for lack of a better word), Yandere-Chan plummets through the earth in a spectacular glitch-fest, and when all returns to normal, she’s missing from the HEARTBROKEN screen, which is otherwise normal. No big deal, but I thought you oughta know…

  26. Wow, It’s so cool! I love that simulator! really great
But I am confused. I tried x-times to download Yandere Simulator, and i don’t know why but it doesn’t works….
my Computer isn’t old so the download should be no problem, but somehow Yandere sim don’t want to activate… Please help me I just love that game and I watchedevery single video of yours This game is just awesome

    Please reply back
    Best regards
    Monic

  27. I checked the known bugs page and didn’t see this bug; I noticed that if you speed up time a few times then try to kill a student, they’ll go into a fist-fight pose and the victim would sort of move around you until you slowed down time at which point you would properly kill them. I know, it’s related to a development feature not in the final game, but thought I should report it anyway.

    • I forgot to mention that I believe that it should be reproducible, as I had the bug on more than one version of the game -including the current- and on more than one computer; one fairly good gaming desktop computer and a laptop computer that sometimes lags with flash games.

    • It’s because he doesn’t notice you. Why would you ask someone you didn’t notice if they hurt themselves? (Because they’re going to kill you if you don’t, but aside from being psychic, he wouldn’t know…)

    • Actually I think it’s because there is literally blood spattered all over Yan-chan’s clothes XD If you saw someone with blood spattered everywhere rather than like… dripping down their arm you’d probably think they hurt someone too 🙂

  28. Hey Dev, In the game play I came across a few bugs.

    1. Once Senpai notices Yandere Chan & the ‘Heartbroken’ Title comes up Yandere chan isn’t there.

2.When I pass time the students pace only increases slightly, in previous builds the students speed was alot faster. I’m not sure if this is a total bug or if it just got changed.

3.When I killed 3 students, two male. Only the female student’s reaction showed on the screen.?Do male students reactions show up when you stab them?

As for the update, its amazing, I really like the voice acting. Anyway I was wondering if Yandere chan would ever have down hair styles? Keep up the good work! 😀

  29. I swear, this Senpai guy is so picky.

“I do not like her victim’s cries,
I do not like her empty eyes.
I do not like her, Sam I Am.
    I do not like Yandere-chan.”

    That’s what he sounds like.

  30. I found a bug. When Senpai-kun noticed me with visible insanity and I got the bad ending, I pressed ‘escape’, and… Suddenly, the… Crouching? Is she crouching? Kneeling? The kneeling yandere-chan usually faces me, but she sort of, turned around and faced the other direction. And… The game crashed.
Another thing, though this is most likely just a missing feature… But I thought I’d just report it, just in case it’s actually a bug. The boys aren’t looking at their cellphones when walking towards school.
And… I can also access the quit-menu while Senpai-kun is saying stuff like “Why is there so much blood on you?”, so… Am I supposed to be able to ‘combat log’, in a way?
Lastly, why does Senpai-kun think Yandere-chan is acting strange when she’s just walking in school from her class to wherever she has lunch break?

  31. Hey Yanderedev,I have a suggestion for the HEARTBROKEN screen (if you don’t mind of course). When you get the heartbroken screen, yandere-chan would fall to her knees and cry (similar to what she does now) but if you choose SNAP (and only if you choose snap) she will raise her head and look forward with a crazy and angry gaze on her eyes, like Shion Sonozaki in the opening of “Higurashi no naku koro ni”

    https://imgflip.com/gif/k7kj4

I just thougth that would look really cool (and it could surprise the player the first time they chose SNAP). Keep working hard and don’t worry, you did make a lot of progress this two weeks! now senpai is finally programmed to notice us ❤

  32. Don’t know if people noticed it but…

There is a spelling mistake in the newest version “Now senpai coul never love me”

Also people seem to disapear from school after a few days. I didn’t kill anybody on one day but on the next day 2/3rds of the people at school have strangely disappeared.
